You’re familiar with the proverb, “When one door shuts, another opens”? With its season one finale, Dexter: New Blood appears to have taken it pretty literally.
After ten years of thinking he had gotten away with murder, the serial killer with a conscience made his way back onto our screens. However, he was unable to stifle the call of the Dark Passenger in his thoughts while residing in the charming town of Iron Lake.
It was just a matter of time until things started going horribly wrong very rapidly, especially when you factor in the reappearance of your long-lost child.
Although it appears that the show’s future is pretty much sealed, Dexter has repeatedly defied the odds and might now continue on in a new configuration.
Even the bosses are not certain that this narrative is over.

Dexter: New Blood season 2 Renewed or Cancelled
If you watched the season finale, you could assume the answer to the question is “no.” Dexter, who had assumed the identity of local shop employee Jim Lindsay after changing his name, finally met a terrible end after his background was revealed.
Yes, after a confrontation with his disturbed and estranged teenage son, Harrison, the character famously portrayed by Michael C. Hall has passed away (Jack Alcott).
However, that doesn’t mean that all is yet over.
The couple appeared to be finally getting along in the epilogue, sharing their own dark sides and desire to kill. Due to a previous childhood experience in which both were tragically abandoned in tears covered in their parents’ blood following their deaths, they were both “born in blood,” as Dexter himself would explain.
However, in an effort to leave Iron Lake as Dexter’s prior transgressions began to catch up with him, Harrison ended up shooting his father after he disregarded his own rules regarding who should and shouldn’t live.
The first guideline is to only murder people who are deserving of it. Dexter broke it by killing the policeman who was keeping him in jail.
While all of this was going on, Miami Metro’s Angel had finally learned that his old blood-spatter analyst friend was still alive and well—and was probably the enigmatic Bay Harbour Butcher. As a result, Dexter was already being engulfed by the net.
Alcott described what it was like to play the part that eliminated a genuinely remarkable anti-hero.
“After we shot it, I was concerned because I thought, “Oh my God, I killed Dexter.” For at least a week, I’m going to be the most despised person in America “Young actor’s statement (via Esquire).
There is remorse associated with killing off one of the greatest TV characters of all time, even though it is the proper ending, the ending the show deserves, the ending the character deserves, and the ending the character wants.
Alcott acknowledged feeling under strain during the crucial shooting in the last death scene.
It was the most difficult event, in his opinion, that he went through during the entire shoot, he said.
“How am I going to provide a performance deserving of all this anticipation, I wondered. This context is entirely missing to me.”
He was nevertheless calmed by Hall’s advice and that of the executive producers.
Alcott remembers that in the first version of the scenario, “the pistol came up way sooner, so that the entire scene was at gunpoint.”
“We experimented with it and found that because it appears later, there is much more area for a complex scene. This is how it’s supposed to end, and nothing else will work, so it’s less just a case of a frustrated son shooting his father.”
Alcott continued, “It’s a contentious ending.
“But I also consider myself tremendously fortunate to be a part of a tale that will have a broad impact. It’s nice to tell stories that have an impact on people, regardless of the outcome—whether it makes them sad, joyful, angry, or loathe me.”
The creators of the show have already announced plans for season two despite the main character’s death.

The show’s creator, Clyde Phillips, told TVLine: “Showtime controls everything. Suppose they called me and said, “We want to do Harrison. I’m pretty busy, but I would stop everything I’m doing and dive straight into it because we want you to find it out. I genuinely want to do it, but Showtime has the final say.
TV producer David Nevins fueled rumors of a potential comeback in August 2022 while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about Paramount Global’s future plans:
“There are many different things. What does the Dexter franchise’s future hold? On it, I am currently working.”
We’re still basking in the sunshine of the limited series, which was everything we hoped for, but Showtime Networks president Gary Levine threw a slight damper on everything just one month later in September 2022 when he remarked “It’s too soon to say” if New Blood will return.
Even while it’s not the encouraging renewal announcement we were hoping for, that’s still not a flat-out no.
According to TV Line, the program averaged 8 million viewers each week across all platforms, making it the most-watched Showtime program in history. The Dexter finale in 2013 drew a massive 3.3 million viewers, so 3 million viewers tuning in for the finale on the premiere night alone made it the most-watched Showtime finale in eight years.
There has yet to be a formal statement regarding Dexter’s likely return for a second season of New Blood as of November 2022. Give it some time, though; the question is one of “when,” not “if.”
Dexter: New Blood Season 2 Cast
As we’ve already stated, there have been no official announcements regarding season 2, but if it does happen, Dexter’s son Harrison, played by Jack Alcott, will take center stage in New Blood.
The last time we saw the serial killer’s teenage son, he had just killed his father and was on the run. Harrison was given the opportunity to start over without having to cope with the guilt of his father’s murder after police chief Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) assumed responsibility for Dexter’s death after discovering Harrison with the body.
Given that viewers already know he has a bit of a deadly killer streak himself, we can’t say that was the best choice she made, but it is what it is.
Harrison has the opportunity for a new beginning, so it’s impossible to predict where he’ll go or what he’ll do with the lessons he’s acquired from his father’s moral killer code.
As a result, it is uncertain who will be added to the cast list. We are aware of no living relatives he is related to. He had complete mobility.
Season four of the first Dexter included the passing of his real mother. In addition, we discovered that Hannah, Dexter’s girlfriend who left with Harrison in the season 8 finale in search of a better life, passed away from cancer off-screen between the first season and New Blood. Harrison only bothered to find Dexter for this reason.
Now that his father has passed away, too? For this incredibly troubled youngster, the sky is the limit.
Dexter: New Blood Season Plot
Showrunner Clyde Phillips has publicly stated that he would be open to a second season; all that would need to happen is for US network Showtime to approve it.
He clarified that this would entail continuing with Harrison playing the lead part in a conversation with Deadline.
He explained to them that Harrison is a complex individual who possesses the makings of the dark passenger. “He is competent. Look at how Dexter was defeated at the end; Harrison knows he must murder this man.”
Harrison also approaches the vigilantism of it all from a different angle than Dexter did, which surprised Dexter somewhat, Phillips continues. He exudes a youthful, upbeat optimism as if he and his father were Batman and Robin: “Think of how many lives we are saving every time we take out one of these evil men, that this bad person is not going to kill.” Dexter had never considered that. Dexter only killed criminals because that was his code of conduct.
Will Harrison be able to harness his own “Dark Passenger” for good?
