Will we see more of Nathan and Nora’s romance?

In season two of Upload, Nathan’s (Robbie Amell) afterlife proves to be much more perplexing and chaotic than most people’s actual existence… and it appears that things are only going to get more convoluted.

Is it a will they or won’t they romance? Check. An ex-girlfriend who won’t let go? Check. A victim of a murder conspiracy planned by a political puppet master bent on world dominance? Check, check, check.

A notion that, while incredibly futuristic, resonates seductively with the Black Mirror-style sense that this is true only moments away from possibility, and that is extremely relatable even if the technology isn’t there yet? We’ll no longer say check.

The dramatic end of Upload season two left us with a lot of questions and even some lives hanging in the balance. And it’s the kind of life-changing moment that not even CTRL+ALT+DEL can undo.

As a result, viewers who sped through the current seven-episode season will have many questions about season three and what’s to come.

Consider us your personal angels, who will keep you updated on these developments. Here’s everything you need to know about a possible third season of Upload…

Upload season 3 Release Date

Excellent news! Upload has been announced to return for season three in May 2022.

“Upload has become a bonafide smash that continues to be one of the most watched comedy originals on Prime Video,” Amazon’s President of Global TV Vernon Sanders stated (via Deadline) in a statement welcoming the show’s renewal. The series continues to connect and raise questions about the future of technology and humans.

“They’ve developed an internationally relevant series with Greg’s particular humorous style, as well as the dynamic creative team and amazing actors, and we’re all immensely proud to bring back another season for our customers.”

Greg Daniels had made no secret of his desire for more episodes, even admitting to returning to work on season three before the second season had even aired.

He was also working on the Netflix comedy Space Force, which has since been canceled.

“I’m in the middle of scripting season three with the room,” Daniels told Collider ahead of the release of season two. We’re about halfway done. So I’m hoping that one will just keep moving forward.

“I mean, [Prime Video] is incredibly enthused about the second-season episodes, which is why we’re deep into creating them… It’s a very visual-effects-heavy show, so even though we shot it before Space Force, it’ll be released a month after Space Force since the post-production process takes so long. So they’re eager to get started so that season three can begin as soon as possible.”

“I’m happy to continue the story of Nathan and Nora and the other residents of Lakeview and near-future America as they try to have fun and do the right thing in both the real and virtual worlds,” he said in a statement.

With important cast members taking on new projects, filming schedules are virtually always tricky. Incidentally, Robbie Amell, who plays Nathan, has been cast in The Witcher’s upcoming season three.

Nonetheless, production began on August 18 (via Midgard Times) and is scheduled to conclude in November. The series stars, including Stephen Amell, Andy Allo, and Owen Daniels, acknowledged the commencement of production on social media.

Upload Season 3 Cast

Upload has three significant players, so you can expect them all to return.

Robbie Amell stars as Nathan, a tech genius turned dead guy who is now (kind of) back to life and living in normal, non-virtual reality.

Then there’s his love interest. Nora (Andy Allo), is a virtual-reality worker who, at the suggestion of her father, has joined the anti-tech movement The Ludds. She has, however, proven to be an excellent leader and is currently near the top of the anarchist movement.

Nathan’s now ex-girlfriend, Ingrid (Allegra Edwards), isn’t done either, and will go to any length to keep him around. She spent most of season two in a tricked-out scuba suit in a bathtub, pretending to upload into the virtual Lakeview world in order to stay near to him. This allows her to dwell in Lakeview without inquiry.

If we return to Lakeview, we’ll most certainly see more of Kevin Bigley, who plays Nathan’s ‘bestie’ Luke, and Owen Daniels, the long-standing AI Man whose visage can be found all throughout the system.

Aleesha (Zainab Johnson), Nora’s best friend, is also likely to return, depending on where her alignment falls in her employment as an upload angel and her friendship with Nora.

According to Variety, Jeanine Mason has joined the cast of Upload season three.

Mason will play a new character named Karina Silva. According to the description, the character is “a lovely senior Horizen executive in charge of new product development and cybersecurity.”

Mason is most recognized for her role in The CW’s Roswell, New Mexico, the second adaption of the Roswell High novel series, which lasted four seasons. Grey’s Anatomy, Trolls: TrollsTopia, and Grace and Frankie are among Mason’s other credits. She’s also recognized for winning the fifth season of the Fox reality show So You Think You Can Dance.

On Instagram, the actress joyfully announced her casting, writing: “I’m off to think about the digital afterlife. I’m very happy to be a part of this team. I’m completely smittennnn. We’ll see you soon! #UploadTV by @uploadonprime.”

Upload Season 3 Plot

As previously stated, season two of Upload finishes on a cliffhanger when Nathan is downloaded into a clone body constructed according to Ingrid’s orders.

Ingrid arranged for Nathan’s body to be regrown in an exceedingly risky treatment in a desperate attempt to keep him after realizing she couldn’t continue living the upload life. It has a very low success rate, with only a small number of pigeons currently winning.

Nathan spent a big portion of season two trying to figure out why he had been murdered to prevent his potential application, Beyond, from allowing poor people to upload freely.

That turns out to be for political purposes. Due to the fact that uploads do not have the right to vote because their lives have technically ended, a malevolent firm called Freeyond was opening dozens of clinics in swing states to allow the poor and desperate to upload into a new existence – and away from voting booths.

If they succeed, hundreds of vital votes will maintain some political titans in power.

Nathan seeks assistance from the Ludds and decides to download into the body despite the risk of death in order to assist Nora in stopping Freeyond before it’s too late.

His scheme initially succeeds, as Nora and Nathan eventually join the Ludds on a train destined for Freeyond.

Unfortunately, Nathan’s nose begins to bleed in the closing seconds, indicating that his new body is rejecting the downloaded soul. Furthermore, realizing she’s lost him, Ingrid launches a new power play, pulling hairs from his hairbrush and purportedly growing a new Nathan from scratch.

Season three will most likely begin shortly after this choice, with Nathan and Nora racing against the clock to save him before it’s too late.

It’ll also be primarily political and will take place outside of Lakeview as the gang decides what to do next in their attempt to bring down Freeyond.

“Like Schrödinger’s Cat, when we open the box, we’ll see if the cat is alive or dead, but right now, the animal is both alive and dead,” Daniels told The Wrap.

“I think it could be played out in a certain number of episodes, then in a different number of episodes, as long as there’s always enough pull forward and enough disclosures.”

“I have to admit that the specifics of the mystery plot are something that we worked out over the course of many discussions and planting of clues and numerous alternatives,” he continued.

“I’ll simply say that I don’t believe we’ve solved the mystery. In the hopes of a season three, I’m plotting more stuff with various writers right now.”

Meanwhile, Andy Allo has a clear vision of where she wants Nora’s story to proceed.

In an interview with Digital Spy, she stated: “I’d like to see Nora get more radicalized and want to bring down the entire system. I want some action, go real rebel mode, and be like, ‘Rah, let’s burn it all down’.”

“By the end of season two, I’m in a difficult position to say that,” Amell remarked. “I’ll say that Greg has a strong track record for what he does, and I believe we’re in excellent hands. Whatever Greg comes up with will most likely be the best version of the show.”

Season three, though, should not be overly political.

“You can’t sidestep critiques of economic disparity and billionaires when that’s your subject matter in a world where heaven is solely for the extremely rich,” Daniels said (via The Hollywood Reporter). “The trick is to create a pleasant comedy show while not hitting people over the head with that.”

“I’d go away to work on something and then come back, like, this show isn’t just for Bernie Bros,” he explains. “We can’t comment on anything this difficult. We had to learn to tone it down, hide the medicine, and concentrate on the comedy.”

“This show is a metaphor for those who spend too much time in virtual space,” Daniels explains. “It’s set in the near future, but it represents so much of how we live now, how people live for their online presence and that virtual version of [themselves].”
