Biography

Only the Family (OTF) is an American hip-hop collective and record label founded by Durk Derrick Banks (born October 19, 1992), better known as Lil Durk.

Durk gained a cult following with the release of his Signed to the Streets mixtape series (2013–2014), which resulted in him signing a record deal with Def Jam Recordings.

Before releasing him in 2018, the label released his first two studio albums, Remember My Name (2015) and Lil Durk 2X (2016). “Viral Moment” from Durk’s fifth studio album, Just Because Y’all Waited for 2, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 2020.

With singles like “3 Headed Goat” (featuring Polo G and Lil Baby), Backdoor,” and “The Voice,” Lil Durk’s commercial resurgence continued with his appearances on Drake’s 2020 single, “Laugh Now Cry Later” and Pooh Shiesty’s song, “Back in Blood,” as well as his albums, The Voice (2020) and The Voice of the Heroes (2021).

Early life

On the south side of Chicago, Durk’s father was incarcerated at the time of his birth on October 19, 1992, therefore he grew up with a lot of responsibilities. There were instances in his childhood when he didn’t have enough food to eat. As his online fan base developed, he began to admire the notion of being a rapper, which he discovered on platforms like Myspace and YouTube.

At age 17, Durk became a father for the first time and dropped out of Paul Robeson High School in Chicago to join the Black Disciples—a street gang in the city known for its violence. Due to his involvement in gun-related offenses, he ended up behind bars for a month in October 2011 and was sentenced to 180 days in prison. According to court documents, he later pled guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Career

Toward the end of 2011, Banks began to take his music more seriously. After his first two tracks, “Sneak Dissin'” and “I’ma Hitta,” garnered mostly great reviews but he was unable to secure deals with the labels of Chief Keef and French Montana, he pondered rapping as a “full-time vocation”. A year ago, Durk released Life Ain’t No Joke, his third mixtape. The mixtape has been downloaded over 216,000 times as of September 22, 2015, according to DatPiff.

A remixed version of “L’s Anthem” featuring French Montana was released by Durk in December 2012.

It was in 2013 when Durk accepted a joint venture arrangement with his collective Only the Family and Def Jam Recordings after the success of “L’s Anthem” and its follow-up single, “Dis Ain’t What U Want”.

Durk’s fourth mixtape, Signed to the Streets, was published on DatPiff on October 14, 2013, after a few minor delays. In addition to Lil Reese’s two guest appearances, Paris Bueller and Young Chop also have to produce credits on the album.

A year later, Rolling Stone ranked Signed to the Streets their eighth-best mixtape of the year. Lil Durk revealed to XXL on October 22nd, 2013, that he was working on his debut album for Def Jam Records. The 2014 XXL Freshmen Class included Durk, as well.

After signing to the streets, Durk released his fifth mixtape on July 7, 2014.

Durk released the title and original release date of his debut studio album Remember My Name on March 25, 2015.

The album’s first single, “Like Me,” which features Jeremih, was released on the same day as the album release. Although the May 12 release date of Remember My Name has been pushed back to June 2 by Durk on April 20, 2015, he also released the official album cover and announced that the release had been pushed back to June 2.

Durk’s debut album, Remember My Name, was released on June 2, 2015, as scheduled. On the Billboard 200, the album debuted at No. 14 and sold 24,000 copies in its first week, with the rest of the units coming from streaming and track sales. Durk’s sixth mixtape, 300 Days, 300 Nights, was released on December 15th of that year. “My Beyoncé,” which includes Detroit rapper Dej Loaf, was the only song released to promote the mixtape. On November 20, 2015, the single was released.

Love Songs for the Streets was Durk’s first mixtape published in February of this year. In August, Supa Vultures, a collaboration with Lil Reese, was released. Bloodas, a joint mixtape with Tee Grizzley, was released in December.

At 12 a.m. on March 30, 2018, Durk announced the release of Just Cause Y’all Waited, his eleventh mixtape, which would be his first digital retail release. Additionally, he acknowledged that he had completed his obligations to Def Jam Records.

Durk, a free agent, released Just Because Y’all Waited on Apple Music and the iTunes Store the next day. Since then, it’s been possible to listen to or download Just Cause Y’all Waited from a variety of sources.

This is Durk’s first top-charting non-album project, peaking at number 57 on the Billboard 200, 28 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and 22 on the Rap Albums list, all according to Billboard.

Durkio Krazy, Durk’s collaboration with 808 Mafia producer DY, is still in the works but has been announced.

He signed with Alamo Records and Interscope Records on July 27th, and his third studio album Signed to the Streets 3 was released on November 9th via Alamo/Interscope. Young Dolph, Gunna, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Future, Kevin Gates, Lil Baby, Lil Skies, TK Kravitz, and Ty Dolla Sign are among the artists who appear on the project.

A sequel to Lil Durk’s 2017 mixtape Love Songs 4 the Streets, Love Songs 4 the Streets 2 was released on August 2, 2019. 21 Savage, A Boogie with da Hoodie, Key Glock, King Von, Meek Mill, and Nicki Minaj all make cameos on the album. In the United States, the album reached number four on the Billboard 200.

Just Because Y’all Waited 2 was released on May 8, 2020, his fifth album.

“3 Headed Goat,” starring Polo G and Lil Baby, is the album’s second most popular track. In its first week, it debuted on the Billboard 200 at number five.

On June 26, 2020, a seven-track deluxe edition of the album was released, propelling it to a new peak of number two on the Billboard 200.

Drake, a Canadian rapper, featured Lil Durk in his song “Laugh Now Cry Later” on August 14, 2020. As Durk’s first and highest-charting single on the Billboard Hot 100, it peaked at number two.

When Lil Durk announced on August 28, 2020, that he was working on a new project named “The Voice,” he originally hinted that it would be released in October of that year. While they were feuding over 6ix9ine’s second studio album, TattleTales, he said he would release new music on the same day. This year Kanye West’s tenth studio album was released on August 29, 2021 with the song “Jonah”; while Drake’s sixth studio album was released on September 3, 2021 with “In the Bible”.

Personal life

On two separate occasions during his early years, his father Dontay Banks Sr. had been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole. Dontay Banks Jr., better known as DThang, was his older brother.

He has six children by the year 2020. He is engaged to India Royale, his longtime lover.

Rapper McArthur Swindle “OTF Nunu” was shot and killed on May 31, 2014.

On March 27, 2015, Durk’s friend and manager, Uchenna “OTF Chino Dolla” Agina, was also shot dead. King Von, a close friend of Lil Durk’s, was assassinated in Atlanta on November 6, 2020.

DThang Banks Jr., Durk’s brother, was shot and died outside a Chicago bar on June 6, 2021.

Durk and his fiancée were the targets of a house invasion on July 11, 2021, in the early hours. They engaged the assailants with gunshots. The suspects fled the location, and no one was hurt in the incident.

Banks is Muslim-owned.

“I changed my life, I’m Muslim” he sings in his song “Viral Moment.”I’m Muslim, I follow the Quran,” he declares in his verse on “In the Bible. In the video for his song “Street Prayer,” he can be seen praying in traditional Islamic garb, including a kufi and thobe.

Legal issues

Banks was sentenced to three months in jail in 2011 after being caught on a weapon charge. After being released on bail, he was brought back to prison for an additional 87 days.  A loaded.40 caliber handgun was found in Banks’ automobile on South Green Street in Chicago on June 5, 2013, when officers approached him. He was accused of using a weapon unlawfully by a felon.

The judge set his bail at $100,000, and Durk’s lawyer asserted that he had nine affidavits from witnesses attesting to Durk’s innocence. In addition, a witness admitted that he had the gun. The film Banks came out on July 18th, 2013.

On September 4, 2015, hours before a scheduled musical performance at the Theater of Living Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a gunfight occurred leaving Durk’s tour bus damaged by gunshots and one guy dead during the event. Durk was not arrested or questioned by police.

Felony gun charges were withdrawn on August 19, 2016, when the judge found him not guilty of violating his probation.

In June 2019, Lil Durk and King Von were arrested on attempted murder allegations. Court documents allege that two individuals robbed and wounded an Atlanta man in February 2019 for a Jeep Cherokee and $30,000 outside a famous drive-in. Durk and Von were released from jail after several weeks on $250,000 and $300,000 bail, respectively.

Controversies

Durk was embroiled in a feud between Chief Keef and Joseph “Lil Jojo” Coleman, a rival Gangster Disciple.

Jojo retaliated to Durk’s song “Ls Anthem” by releasing “BDK (300K),” a diss track that targeted a large number of gang members, including Keef, Lil Reese, and Durk. On September 5, 2012, Lil Jojo was shot and died in the midst of a long-running rivalry.

Durk and Chief Keef’s label, Glo Gang, began to have social and personal issues in late 2012 after signing with Universal Music’s sibling companies, Def Jam Recordings, and Interscope Records, respectively. Durk disassociated himself from Keef’s label after a social media exchange.

When Durk’s Nicki Minaj remix with Meek Mill and Shy Glizzy to “Chiraq” went viral, a rash of songs dissing Durk ensued.

On the same page, he also takes out Keef as well as The Game, Tyra Banks, and King L’s Gangster Disciples. “Chiraq” remix by Tyga and The Game, which Keef disregarded, is even labeled as “disrespectful” by the rapper. Amid the continuing dispute between rappers Keef and Migos, Durk publicly praised the group for embarrassing Keef.

However, in August of that year, Durk decided to put a stop to the rivalry.

A few days later, King L responded to Durk and Keef by dubbing their rivalry a “whack movie trailer” analogy to Durk’s “Chiraq” remix.

However, King L’s catastrophe with Durk was deemed a “huge error” by him.

Following the release of their remix to Nicki Minaj’s “Chiraq,” titled “Chiraq to L.A.,” Durk and California rappers The Game and Tyga began a feud in 2014.

This prompted Durk and The Game to engage intense social exchanges. Tiffney Cambridge was Game’s ex-fiancée, and as Durk threatened to “holla” at him, the rapper went on a sexual boast about having an affair with her. This, however, would drive Game to retaliate with “Bigger than Me,” in which he criticizes Durk, 40 Glocc, 2014 XXL’s Freshman Class, and numerous others. Durk ended his battle with Game eight months later, and he did the same with Tyga a week later.

Durk and Famous Dex attended Paul Robeson High School together as teenagers, but the two didn’t stay in touch when they dropped out.

It was only at the 2016 BET Awards that they were finally able to meet after Durk’s fame spread that Dex disclosed that he had never seen him again.

Also, Durk admitted that he and Dex were still “rockin'” together.

In the spring of 2016, Tay600 was booted from of his gang group, The Team 600, and also dropped from Only the Family after being suspected of testifying against fellow Black Disciples RondoNumbaNine, CDai, and DRose600 in their murder trials as an eyewitness.

Instead of snitching on his former buddies, Tay600 blamed Durk for the whole affair and released a music video for “Pressure” and a new mixtape, The Truth, in February of that year. Durk also produced a remix of Meek Mill’s “We Ball” with Tay600’s cousin, Booka600, after dissing Tay600 in a live venue.

Durk partnered with a rival, and Tay600 was infuriated. He responded by making his own remix of “We Ball,” labeling Only the Family “fags” in the process. In September 2017, Tay600 blamed his old gang mates for not supporting him, which reignited the feud. The mother of two of Durk’s six children was also involved in an affair with him, and he boasted about it.

In their fourth year together, Lil Durk and India Royale got engaged.

During a concert in Chicago, the rapper proposed to his girlfriend.

Lil Durk pulled out Royale during his performance at WGCI’s Big Jam concert at the United Center.

His knees buckled, he bowed, and he stated “I’d give my life for you. When I was going through a lot, you were the one to hold me down.”

The artist said, “You’ve been the most real to me.” “Would you marry me?”

The crowd roared and Royale, a model, social media influencer, and entrepreneur behind a beauty company that the rapper has pushed in his music, agreed to the proposal.

A young daughter was born to the couple.
