Emma Raducanu MBE is a professional tennis player from the United Kingdom. She achieved a career-high ranking of No. 11 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) on April 25, 2022, and is currently the No. 1 player in the United Kingdom. Raducanu was born in Toronto and raised in London, where he currently resides. In June 2021, she made her professional tennis debut on the WTA Tour. She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a wildcard entry, despite being ranked outside of the top 300.

This was her first major tournament. Raducanu made history by becoming the first singles qualifier in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open two months later, defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final without dropping a set throughout the entire tournament. It was only her second Grand Slam tournament of her professional career, and she now holds the Open Era record for the fewest majors she has competed in before winning a championship.

Originally from Bromley, England, Emma Raducanu was born on November 13, 2002, in Toronto, Canada and raised in Toronto, Canada. Ion Răducanu is from Bucharest, Romania, and Renee Zhai (Dongmei) is from Shenyang, China. Her father, Ion Răducanu, is a professional footballer.

“Both of my parents came from very academic households… [in] communist countries, so education was really the only option for them,” she has stated.

Her father and mother are both employed in the financial industry.

Her family relocated to England when she was two years old, and she is a dual citizen of both the United Kingdom and the country of Canada.

In addition to English and Mandarin proficiency, she is nearly proficient in Romanian; her grandmothers reside in Bucharest and Northeast China.

Even though Raducanu began playing tennis at the age of five, as a child, he participated in a variety of other sports and hobbies, including basketball; golf; karting; motocross; skiing; horseback riding; ballet; and other activities.

The Formula One racing series and the football club Tottenham Hotspur are also two of her favourite things.

A* in mathematics and an A in economics were among her A-Level grades at Newstead Wood School, a selective grammar school in Orpington, where she received a first-class degree with distinction in mathematics and an A in economics.

Raducanu has credited her professional role models, Simona Halep and Li Na, with instilling her mentality and principles in her.

Simona Halep claims that Romanians are “proud” of Emma Raducanu’s historic victory at the US Open and have adopted her as a member of their family.

On January 28, 2022, a man was found guilty of stalking Raducanu at her residence; Raducanu said that the episodes made her feel insecure in her own home and frightened about going out alone at night.

On the 23rd of February in the year 2022, the man was issued a five-year restraining order against him.

Professional career

Raducanu made her ITF Women’s circuit debut in 2018, winning her first title of the year in May at the $15,000 ITF Tiberias tournament.

In October, she won a second $15,000 title at the ITF Antalya, capping off a successful season.

Raducanu competed in the Maharashtra state of India in 2019. She was eliminated in the second round of the Solapur Open, which was worth $25,000. The following month, she won a $25K tournament in Pune, India; in the finals at Deccan Gymkhana Ground, she defeated Naiktha Bains in three sets to claim the title. Her victories in the semifinals and quarterfinals were decided in three sets.

In the 2019 Fed Cup (Billie Jean King Cup), she was a hitting partner for the British team, which won the competition. After Johanna Konta resigned from the squad in order to concentrate on the Olympics, she was selected to represent them in the 2020 Qualifying tournament. According to the press at the time, Raducanu has dubbed “the British player with the greatest promise of her generation.”

She was scheduled to partner Bains in the doubles qualifiers against Slovakia, however, the match was cancelled due to inclement weather. Upon being asked about being called up to the British team as a youngster, Raducanu responded, “Being a bit of an underdog is excellent because it allows you to go out there without fear.”

Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, many tennis tournaments were postponed or cancelled in 2020.

The Romanian footballer Raducanu took part in exhibition matches and little competitions in the United Kingdom. In December 2020, she was crowned champion of the Lawn Tennis Association LTA British Tour Masters.   She also made time for her academic activities, which included studying for her A-Levels (which she took in 2021).

Nigel Sears, the father-in-law of former men’s singles world No. 1 Andy Murray, began training Raducanu after Sears was replaced as Anett Kontaveit’s coach at the end of April 2021. Raducanu has been training with Sears since that time.

Raducanu was not selected for the Billie Jean King Cup team for the 2020 Play-offs, which will take place in April 2021, following the conclusion of the postponed 2020–21 season.

She made her WTA Tour main-draw debut at the 2021 Nottingham Open, where she qualified as a wildcard entry, at the beginning of June. She was defeated by fellow Briton Harriet Dart in the first round of the tournament.

Raducanu made her Grand Slam main-draw debut at the Wimbledon Championships in late June after being awarded a wildcard.

She advanced to the third round after winning her first two matches against Vitalia Diatchenko as well as Markéta Vondrouová.

Her age of 19 made her the youngest British woman to reach the third round of the Wimbledon Championships since Elena Baltacha did so in 2002.

She then defeated Sorana Cîrstea to advance to the fourth round, becoming the youngest British woman to reach the last 16 in the Open Era at the age of 18 years and 239 days, and the youngest woman ever to do so.

As a result of her victory, she has secured her place in the world’s top 200 rankings, having begun Wimbledon ranked 338 in the world.

Raducanu retired in the second set of her fourth-round match against Ajla Tomljanovi on July 5, 2021, due to breathing difficulties and nausea, which she had experienced earlier in the day.

Raducanu changed her coach from Sears to Andrew Richardson, who was one of Raducanu’s youth coaches, in July 2021.

Raducanu was picked to be coached by Richardson for the US Open Series because he was already familiar with her game and would be “more likely than anybody else to make her feel comfortable” taking on matches in the United States as a result of her newly-acquired status in the country.

The following month, she competed in the Silicon Valley Classic, the first women’s tournament in the annual US Open Series, after getting a wildcard to enter the tournament once more.

She lost in the first round to Zhang Shuai, who beat Raducanu in the previous round. The WTA 125 event in Chicago was her first major tournament appearance, and she advanced to the finals before losing to Clara Tauson.

The WTA ranking points she earned propelled her to a new career high of world No. 150 as a result of her success.

Raducanu was a qualifier for the US Open, and he competed there. For her spot in the main draw, she needed to win three consecutive sets against Bibiane Schoofs, Mariam Bolkvadze, and Mayar Sherif in the qualifying rounds. There, she faced two top-40-ranked players and proceeded to defeat Stefanie Vögele, Zhang Shuai, Sara Sorribes Tormo, Shelby Rogers, Belinda Bencic, and Maria Sakkari in straight sets to reach the final, which she did without dropping a set as well.

In advancing to the final of the US Open, she gained more than 100 ranking positions in a single competition, climbing into the top 25 and displacing Konta to become the British No. 1 for the first time in her career.

The only singles qualifier in the Open Era to reach the semifinals and finals of the US Open, and the youngest player to reach the finals since Maria Sharapova in 2006, she made history by becoming the first woman to do it.

In addition, she became the fifth player in the Open Era to reach the semifinals of the US Open on her first appearance.

As a result of her semifinal victory over Sakkari, Raducanu became only the second player born in 2002 (the first being her opponent) to advance to the US Open final, and the first woman from the United Kingdom to do so since Virginia Wade did so in 1968. Wade was in attendance at a number of Raducanu’s matches, including the championship match.

The US Open was shown on Amazon Prime Video, a subscription streaming service; the British television network Channel 4 arranged to purchase the rights to broadcast the final less than 24 hours before it was played on the courts of New York City.

Despite the fact that the final took place overnight in the United Kingdom, 9.2 million people tuned in to watch it live on Channel 4. In the United States, more viewers tuned in to see the women’s singles final than the men’s.

This was the first all-teenage women’s singles final since the 1999 US Open final between Serena Williams and Martina Hingis. Raducanu defeated Leylah Fernandez in two sets, winning with a 109-mph ace in the second set.

She became the first woman to win the US Open without dropping a set since Serena Williams did so in 2014. She was also the first qualifier (male or female) to win a Grand Slam tournament during the Open Era, and the first woman to win a major tournament during the Open Era in the second major tournament she had entered. It also meant that she became only the second debutante in the history of the US Open, behind Bianca Andreescu, to win the title.

The competition was dubbed “The Fairytale of New York” after Raducanu’s record-breaking run and win at the tournament.

As a result of her victory at the US Open, Raducanu climbed to No. 23 in the world rankings, an increase of 332 places from where she started the year.

In doing so, she became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Wade did so at the 1977 Wimbledon Championships, and the first British male to do so since Andy Murray did it at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships.

Raducanu made the decision not to prolong her coaching agreement with Richardson less than two weeks after winning the US Open[89]. In the following months, she conducted teaching tryouts at the Bromley Tennis Centre in Bromley, Kent.

She stated that she would not rush into a permanent coaching hire since she believed it was vital for her game to become more autonomous, but that she hoped to have a coach in place before the 2022 Tour kicked up in 2019.

Raducanu competed at the Indian Wells Open in October 2021, taking a wildcard spot in the main tournament in exchange for his participation.

Jeremy Bates, a former British No. 1 who had previously worked with her at the LTA before to Indian Wells, assisted her at the tournament despite the fact that she was playing without a coach. Raymond Sarmiento was her hitting partner for the duration of the event.

Raducanu was defeated by Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her maiden encounter, which she lost in straight sets. The Romanian tennis player Raducanu withdrew from the Kremlin Cup following her defeat in Indian Wells, citing scheduling conflicts. As part of her hunt for a permanent coach in time for the 2022 Australian Open, Raducanu trained with Konta’s old coach, Esteban Carril, for a week before to her next competition.

She subsequently went on to compete in WTA tournaments as a favourite. She was seeded third at the Transylvania Open, which took place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, this year. By defeating Polona Hercog in the finals, she achieved her first career WTA Tour victory.

She advanced to the quarterfinals by overcoming Ana Bogdan, however, she was defeated in straight sets by Marta Kostyuk in the final. Her final WTA Tour event of 2021 was the Linz Open, where she qualified as the top seed for the first time in her professional career. She was defeated in three sets by Wang Xinyu in the round of 16 of the tournament.

Torben Beltz was named to the job of permanent coach shortly after the event concluded, just a few days after ending his long-running on-off association with Angelique Kerber. She hired Beltz shortly after the competition and named him to the position shortly after.

Immediately before the US Open, Raducanu expressed a desire to find a coach with tour experience; former world No. 1 Mats Wilander said that an elite coach like as Beltz could not assist an eighteen-year-old (such as Raducanu) who is already elite and instead discovering their own game.
