Known collectively as the Olsen twins, Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Fuller Olsen (born June 13, 1986) are American fashion designers and former actors who rose to prominence in the 1990s. The twins made their broadcast debut as Michelle Tanner on the Full House television series when they were just a few months old.

Mary-Kate and Ashley began appearing together in television, film, and video projects when they were six years old, and this lasted into their adolescence. The Olsens, through their company Dualstar, rose to the ranks of the wealthiest women in the entertainment world at a young age, being the youngest to do so.

Lives and career

Father David “Dave” Olsen and mother Jarnette “Jarnie” (née Jones) gave birth to the fraternal twins in the California town of Sherman Oaks. In addition to an older brother, Trent, and a younger sister, actress Elizabeth, they also have a half-sister, Courtney Taylor, and a half-brother, Jake. Trent is the oldest of the three children.  Taylor and Jake’s parents divorced in 1995; they are the children of their father’s second marriage at the time of their birth. The Olsen twins are descended from Norwegian ancestors.

Michelle Tanner, a character on the ABC comedy Full House, was cast in the part of the twins in 1987, when they were just six months old. They started filming when they were nine months old. It was necessary for the sisters to take turns portraying the role in order to comply with child labour rules, which place stringent limits on how long a child actor may work. The Olsens continued to portray Michelle for the duration of the show’s run, which ended in 1995.

In 1992, Mary-Kate and Ashley shared the role of Michelle Tanner in the Full House crossover episode of Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, in which they appeared as Michelle Tanner and Ashley Tanner. During their time as Full House stars, the Olsens began participating in films and television shows (as separate characters) while still on the show. It was 1992 when the first of these films, To Grandmother’s House We Go, was released, and it featured cameo appearances by several other Full House cast members.

After forming Dualstar in 1993, the Olsens went on to make a number of films and videos with their brother and sister, including 1993’s Doubt, Doubt, Toil and Trouble and 1994’s How the West Was Fun. The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, a series of musical mystery videos that started in 1994 and ran until 1997, was a hit with children and families.

Following the conclusion of Full House, the Olsens made their feature film debut in It Takes Two, in which they co-starred with Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley, which was released in 1995. It was also in that year that they debuted a second video series, You’re Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley’s…, which continued to be updated with new episodes until the end of 2000.

The Olsens made an appearance on an episode of All My Children the following season.

In 1997, they returned to Sister Sister as guest stars in an episode of the popular television series.

The twins again returned to series television in 1998 with another ABC sitcom, Two of a Kind, which featured Christopher Sieber as their characters’ widower father and co-starred with the twins. Although the sitcom only lasted one season, it was broadcast in repeats on cable for several years after that. The year 1998 also saw the debut of Billboard Dad, the first of a new series of direct-to-video films starring the Olsens, which was also released in 1998. The Challenge, the final of these films, was released in 2003.

The Olsens starred as bad girls Sue and Carol Murphy in an episode of the television series 7th Heaven in 2000.

Two new shows premiered that year, So Little Time (a live-action sitcom on Fox Family, subsequently ABC Family), and Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action! (an animated series aired on ABC on Saturday mornings), both of which starred the sisters. However, Mary-Kate received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for her performance on So Little Time, despite the fact that both shows were terminated after only one season.

In the spring of 2004, Mary-Kate and Ashley appeared in an episode of The Simpsons as the readers of Marge’s book-on-tape, The Harpooned Heart, which they recorded themselves.

In addition, the twins appeared in a second feature film, New York Minute, which was released in 2004. Ashley’s final acting job would be in this picture, which would also be their final collaboration. She has continued to make appearances in films and television shows.

The Mary-Kate and Ashley’s Fun Club was a fan club that existed until 2000, in which members could pay to obtain Mary-Kate and Ashley souvenirs and images in exchange for their membership. An edition of Our Funzine, Mary-Kate and Ashley’s fan club magazine that was only accessible through the club, as well as a collectibles catalogue, from which one could purchase T-shirts, posters, baseball caps, key rings, school folders, postcards, and other items were included with each subscription.

“Surprise gifts” (typically key rings, book excerpts, or back issues of the Funzine) were also included, as well as lyric sheets for Mary-Kate and Ashley’s original songs, a school folder, a membership card, a full-sized poster, two black and white photos (one of each girl), and a colour photo with reprint autographs.

In addition, the club was promoted at the beginning of each Mary-Kate and Ashley film until 1998.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Mary-Kate and Ashley were two of the most well-known figures in the preteen market. Their names and likenesses appeared on a variety of products, including clothing, shoes, purses, hats, books, CDs and cassette tapes, fragrances and makeup, magazines, video and board games, dolls, posters, calendars, and even telephones and CD players, with the majority of the market share being made up of the tween demographic. From 2000 through 2005, Mattel offered a number of different sets of Mary-Kate and Ashley fashion dolls, as well as separate costumes and accessory packs for each doll.

On their 18th birthday, in 2004, the sisters were elected to the position of co-presidents of Dualstar. Following their acquisition of control of the company, Mary-Kate and Ashley immediately set about securing the company’s long-term viability by introducing products that catered to the teen market, such as home décor and fragrances.

The Dualstar brand is available in more than 3,000 locations in the United States and more than 5,300 outlets internationally under the Dualstar umbrella.

Having appeared on the Forbes “Celebrity 100” list every year since 2002, Forbes placed them (as a group) as the eleventh-richest women in entertainment, with an estimated net worth of US$100 million, according to Forbes in 2007.

Throughout their lives, the sisters have shown increasing interest in their personal style, with The New York Times naming Mary-Kate a fashion legend for pioneering her characteristic “homeless” appearance.

The style, which fashion critics have referred to as “ashcan” or “bohemian-bourgeois”, is akin to the boho-chic style popularised in the United Kingdom by celebrities such as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. Incorporating big sunglasses, boots, loose sweaters, and flowing skirts, the style achieves an aesthetic that is a blend of high and low-end goods.

They were chosen to be the faces of the expensive fashion company Badgley Mischka in 2006, and they have remained there since.

A clothing line for girls ages 4–14 was available in Wal-Mart shops across North America, as was a beauty line dubbed “Mary-Kate and Ashley: Real fashion for real girls,” which was launched by the Olsens. As a result of making the promise, they made headlines in 2004 when they announced that they would grant all of the workers who sew their clothesline in Bangladesh full maternity leave.

As a result of their dedication to worker rights, the National Labor Committee, which arranged the pledge, praised the twins’ efforts.

Besides their own couture fashion line, The Row, which is named after London’s Savile Row, the Olsens have now created their own jewellery line, Olsen Jewelry.

Several of their unique antique treasures and pieces from their personal wardrobes served as inspiration for the birth of their contemporary line, Elizabeth & James, which debuted in 2007. A women’s clothing brand for J.C. Penney, called Olsenboye, as well as a T-shirt line called “StyleMint” have also been launched by the group.

It was in 2008 that the sisters released the book Influence, which was a collection of interviews with many of the most renowned figures in the industry of fashion. In August 2013, the twins debuted a new fashion line in Oslo, Norway, which has since expanded internationally.

CFDA (Congress of Fashion Designers of America) awarded the Olsens as Womenswear Designers of the Year for the first time in 2012 for their collection The Row. In 2015, they were honored with the trophy once more. The Olsens also won Accessories Designer of the Year by the CFDA in 2014 for their collaboration with The Row.
