Iggy Azalea Biography
Amie Amelia Kelly (born June 7, 1990), better known by her stage name Iggy Azalea, is an Australian rapper who is most recognized for her music. Azalea relocated from Australia to the United States when she was 16 years old in order to pursue a music career in the country. Azalea first got widespread attention after releasing music videos for her songs “Pussy” and “Two Times” on YouTube, both of which quickly gained widespread attention and acclaim. T.I.’s record label, Grand Hustle, signed Azalea shortly after, and she released her debut mixtape, “Ignorant Art,” on the label’s label shortly after that (2011).

Despite reaching the top five of numerous charts around the world with her debut studio album, The New Classic (2014), Azalea’s first studio album garnered a mixed response from the music industry. The album finally peaked at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list, making Azalea the first female rapper from a country other than the United States to do so.
The New Classic was preceded by Azalea’s first single “Work,” as well as the chart-topping track “Fancy,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Aziz Ansari was a featured artist on Ariana Grande’s track “Problem,” which reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 behind “Fancy.”
The success of these singles propelled Azalea into the company of The Beatles as the only act to reach the top of the Hot 100 chart at the top of both positions with their first two singles. In addition, she earned three top ten successes on the Hot 100 at the same time with the aforementioned songs as well as the album’s fifth single, “Black Widow,” which was released later that year and peaked at number nine.
A number of songs were released following the release of her debut album, in order to generate interest for her upcoming second studio album, Digital Distortion. However, a series of disagreements with her record company, as well as personal issues, led to the cancellation of the project. As a result, Azalea changed record labels, releasing the EP Survive the Summer (2018) under the Island Records label in 2018.
Further disagreements led to Azalea establishing herself as an independent artist and launching her own record label, Bad Dreams, with the help of an Empire distribution deal. Her second studio album, In My Defense, was released in 2019, and she also released an EP, Wicked Lips, in the same year as the album.
Azalea released her third and final studio album, The End of an Era, in August 2021, just before announcing her retirement from the music industry.
Since her debut, Azalea has sold more than 70 million records globally, including 22 million singles in the United States alone, according to her official website.
Azalea’s awards and nominations include two American Music Awards, three Billboard Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, four Teen Choice Awards, and four Grammy Award nominations.

Iggy Azalea Early life and education
Amethyst Amelia Kelly was born in Sydney and raised in the town of Mullumbimby, in the New South Wales state of Australia. Her father, Brendan Kelly, worked as an Irish-Australian painter and comic artist, while her mother, Tanya,[9] worked as a housekeeper in vacation rental properties and hotels. Azalea lived in a house that her father constructed entirely by hand from mud bricks and was surrounded by a plot of land measuring 5 hectares (12 acres).
She has two siblings, Mathias and Emerald Kelly, who are both named Mathias. Azalea claims to have some Aboriginal (Indigenous Australian) ancestry, which she describes as follows: “My ancestors arrived in Australia on the First Fleet. My ancestors have lived in that country for a very long period, more than 100 years.
The majority of [Aboriginal blood] can be traced back to your family if they have resided in Australia for an extended period of time. I know this since my family suffers from an eye ailment that only Aboriginal people are afflicted with.” She has also stated that her father “forced her to look at [art] when she was a youngster,” which has had a lasting impact on her life and career.
She began rapping when she was fourteen years old. Prior to launching her solo career, Azalea founded a group with two other girls from her area, which they named: “I thought to myself, “I could be the rapper.” This could be similar to TLC. I’ll be the Left Eye in this game.” Eventually, Azalea decided to dissolve the group due to the fact that the other females were not treating it properly: “Everything I do is taken extremely seriously [sic]. I’m a little too competitive.”
Azalea dropped out of high school in order to pursue her dream of emigrating to the United States. She earned money by cleaning hotel rooms and vacation rental properties with her mother, and she used that money to save. According to her, school, with the exception of art class, was a source of constant misery for her. She also mentioned she had no friends and was bullied for her homemade clothing.
Azalea first visited the United States in 2006, only a few months before she turned sixteen.
She informed her parents of her plans to travel “I was pulled to America because I felt like an alien in my own country, and I was in love with hip hop, and America is the cradle of that, so I assumed the closer I was to the music, the happier I’d be.” I was completely correct.” She added, “I remember thinking, ” “I could hear my mother sobbing and saying, ‘Just be safe.’ ‘I’m going to go by myself,’ I thought to myself. ‘I’m completely insane!’

After arriving in the United States, she obtained her General Educational Development (GED) and lived in the country for six years under a visa waiver, returning to Australia every three months to renew her visa. Azalea worked in the United States illegally until she was given an O visa in February 2013, which allowed her to stay for five years. She named herself Iggy after her dog, with who she grew up. Azalea was granted permanent residency in the United States in 2018.
Iggy Azalea Career
When she first arrived in the United States in 2006, she remained in Miami, Florida, and then for a short time in Houston, Texas, before returning to Miami. Azalea lived for a few years in Atlanta, Georgia, where she collaborated with Backbone, a member of the rap collective Dungeon Family, on her music. During this time, she met future collaborators FKi and Natalie Sims, who became her friends.
She claimed that people would laugh at her because “they thought my raps sucked,” but she claimed that she had grown up being laughed at, so she was able to brush it off. She had met someone from Interscope Records in the meantime, and this person pushed her to relocate to Los Angeles during the summer of 2010.

Interscope would go on to manage her for a brief amount of time after this initial agreement. Her stage name, Iggy Azalea, was coined during this period and is a combination of the name of her childhood dog, Iggy, and the street where she grew up, Azalea Street, where her family still resides today. She also began experimenting with stop motion animation and freestyle rap since she thought she had discovered her own unique style of music.
She published her first full-length project, a mixtape titled Ignorant Art, on September 27, 2011, stating that she did so with the intention of making people “think and redefine previous values.” She also released her debut single, “Ignorant Art,” on September 27.
“Pussy,” a song she wrote for the project, was featured on the mixtape along with guest performances from YG, Joe Moses, Chevy Jones, and Problem. It was directed by Alex/2tone, and it was released in November 2011 as a music video for her song “My World.” It is the video’s cameo appearance by character actor and former wrestler Tiny Lister that has brought her additional notice as a result of the video’s increasing popularity on the internet.
When asked about the video, Azalea remarked, “It’s supposed to have, like, all the craziness of a big-budget ’90s video, but then chopped and screwed.” Announcing her upcoming debut studio album, The New Classic, in December 2011, Azalea stated that she would release it as soon as she signed a major record label deal, saying, “Once that’s sorted out and I establish an overall sound and direction for the album, I will be able to know what artists would make for a dynamic collaboration.”
Azalea released the music video for “The Last Song” on January 11, 2012, marking her third video of the album Ignorant Art.

In an interview with Billboard, which was published on January 27th, Azalea hinted at a possible signing with Interscope Records, while also expressing her plans for the release of The New Classic in June, with her debut song to be released in March to precede it.
Azalea enlisted the help of rapper T.I. to help her with the direction of her debut album. Following a phone conversation between the two, T.I. has tapped to executive produce The New Classic. A summer release for The New Classic was in the works at the time, with Azalea anticipating a June release: “Hopefully, if everything goes according to plan, my album will be released in June, and I’ll have it recorded by the end of the month.”
However, because Interscope refused to allow T.I. to remain a part of her deal on an ongoing basis, Azalea decided not to sign with the big label and instead remained independently tied to Grand Hustle Records until the release of her debut album, which was subsequently postponed until later in the year. Azalea was featured on the cover of XXL magazine in early 2012, as part of the magazine’s annual “Top 10 Freshman List,” which included other up-and-coming rappers French Montana, Machine Gun Kelly, Danny Brown, Hopsin, and Roscoe Dash, among others.
T.I. revealed on March 1, 2012, that he had signed Azalea to his Grand Hustle Records label, which also included rappers Chip and Trae the Truth. ‘Murda Bizness,’ the anticipated lead single from The New Classic, was released on YouTube on March 26, 2012, according to Azalea’s official YouTube channel. The song was created by Bei Maejor and features a verse from her Grand Hustle label boss T.I. The song was written by Bei Maejor and produced by Bei Maejor.
Through her Twitter page, Azalea announced plans to release an extended play (EP) dubbed Glory later in May, which she would be the first to do so “I’ve been on to something for the past two weeks, and it’s been nothing short of spectacular. The Azaleans are in desperate need of something new.”
The singer also appeared with Grammy-nominated producer Diplo and FKi in the world’s first fully interactive shoppable music video, created for Canadian apparel website SSENSE, which was released in April.

T.I. stated on MTV’s HipHopPov in May 2012 that Azalea had not yet secured distribution for her deal with Grand Hustle Records, and referred to Azalea as a “free agent” during the episode. She later disclosed in the interview that she was in talks with labels other than Interscope, including Def Jam Recordings, and that this was the case (wherein Bu Thiam, whom which originally placed a bid to sign her is VP of A&R).
She also appeared on the collaboration electronic single “Beat Down,” which was released on May 31, 2012, by Steve Aoki and Angger Dimas and has Steve Aoki as the producer.
On June 24, 2012, Azalea released “Millionaire Misfits,” the second single from her EP Glory, following the release of “Murda Bizness,” the first single from the EP. On July 21, the official music video for “Murda Bizness” was made available for viewing on the internet. Glory, despite the fact that it was not launched in May as originally planned, was released on July 30th, 2012. Azalea was also one of the performers on MTV’s Closer to My Dreams Tour in 2012, which also included Tyga and Kirko Bangz.
After announcing the release of her second mixtape on September 28, 2012, Azalea confirmed the date of the release on October 11, 2012. The mixtape, which goes by the name TrapGold, was totally produced by Diplo and FKi.
Later, she debuted teaser visuals for the music “Bac 2 Tha Future (My Time),” which she wrote and produced. On October 9, 2012, Azalea made her national television debut in the United States, performing in a cypher with T.I., B.o.B., and other Grand Hustle artists at the 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards in Los Angeles.
Later that same month, she went on yet another North American mini-concert tour, this time with Roc Nation singer-songwriter Rita Ora, on her Ora Tour, which was her first tour since 2009. The following year, Azalea headlined a tour of Europe in support of TrapGold. A live performance of “Groove Is in the Heart,” a cover of Deee-1990 Lite’s hit disco song “Groove Is in the Heart,” by Azalea, Natasha Bedingfield, and Bootsy Collins, was broadcast on the yearly television series VH1 Divas on December 16, 2012.
In January and February 2013, Azalea was on tour while also working on her next singles and The New Classic, which would be released in the summer of 2013. In the United Kingdom, she served as the opening act for Rita Ora’s Radioactive Tour, which she headlined.
Azalea debuted her commercial debut single “Work” as part of her set for Ora’s Radioactive Tour, which also acts as the lead single for her first album. The song was premiered as part of her set for Ora’s Radioactive Tour.
On February 11, 2013, BBC Radio 1Xtra broadcasted the world premiere of the song. According to reports, Azalea has signed with Mercury Records and will release a new album in the near future. Jonathan and François directed the music video for her debut single “Work,” which was published on March 13th, 2013 via YouTube. Also in March 2013, Azalea joined Nas on the European leg of his Life Is Good Tour, which kicked off in the United Kingdom.
During the eight-week-long campaign, which began on April 15, 2013, Vevo announced Azalea as the second LIFT artist of the year and announced that she would film live festival performances, fashion and style pieces, and behind-the-scenes interviews as part of her involvement. It was also confirmed that the music video for her second single, “Bounce,” would be released on Vevo at the end of the month, as previously announced.
On March 16, 2013, it was reported that Azalea would perform at the “Chime for Change” charity concert, which will take place on June 1 in London and will feature Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and other notable artists, among others. Announcing the signing of a solo record deal with Island Def Jam on April 23, 2013, Azalea became the first female rapper to do so. On April 26, 2013, BBC Radio 1 broadcasted the world premiere of “Bounce.”
The rapper T.I. also contributed a verse to her third international song, which will be released from her debut album and be titled “Change Your Life.” Azalea also revealed that she was not officially signed to Grand Hustle Records, but that she was still closely associated with the company.
As part of Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Derry, Northern Ireland, Azalea delivered a renowned carnival-themed show on the In New Music We Trust stage on May 25, 2013, which was much praised. The program included tracks from prior EPs as well as new album material, such as “Bounce” and “Work,” among other songs. The show marked the beginning of a brief series of promotional appearances in the United Kingdom in advance of the album’s release.
Azalea revealed in June 2013 that the album was nearly finished and that the release date was set for September 2013. The album was anticipated to be released in September 2013. Earlier this month, Azalea announced that she will be opening for Beyoncé on the 17-date Australia leg of her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, which will take place in October and November 2013.
The New Classic’s third song, “Change Your Life,” was premiered on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s MistaJam on August 19, 2013, and is the third single from the album. On October 3, 2013, Azalea made her television debut on BET’s 106 & Park, where she was interviewed and performed the song “Change Your Life” with T.I., among other guests.
Azalea’s debut album, The New Classic, was originally scheduled for release in October 2013, but she revealed in an interview with Australia’s Herald Sun that she would not be able to release it until March 2014 due to other commitments, such as supporting Beyoncé on her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour, and that her record label would not allow her to release it until then.
She expressed herself as follows: “When is the official start date? I’m screwed if I don’t know! Although saying this is quite depressing, it is true. It is the beginning of March, which seems like a very long time away, but I have to accept that this is the case.”
She went into detail about the reasons for the delay: “Originally, it was supposed to be released in October, but I’m going on tour with Beyoncé, and they’ve told me that I’m not allowed to release an album while I’m on tour because I’ll be trapped in Australia and won’t be able to do any TV appearances, which I thought was reasonable, and it’s only three weeks, but then they said, ‘You can’t put an album out around Christmas time, that’s a bad time,’ and After that, it’s the BRIT Awards, which means you can’t release an album and it’s bad for marketing, which leads me to February. “No one gets back from vacation,” I say.”
On November 10, 2013, Azalea and Robin Thicke performed “Blurred Lines” at the 2013 MTV Europe Music Awards in London, England.
On December 5, 2013, a leaked version of Azalea’s unfinished song “Leave It,” which was purportedly produced by DJ Mustard, was made public.
It was eventually revealed that the song was actually produced by The Invisible Men and The Arcade, with whom she had worked on the whole album prior to this revelation.
When Azalea announced the release of her new track “Fancy,” which features English singer-songwriter Charli XCX, it was met with widespread excitement and anticipation. Earlier that day, at 7 p.m. GMT, BBC Radio 1 Xtra broadcasted the song for the first time. Immediately following the song’s release, it was revealed that “Fancy” was the song that had previously leaked under the title “Leave It.” The song was released as the fourth single from the album on February 17, 2014, and was distributed to urban contemporary radio stations in the United Kingdom.
This month, on March 4, the music video for “Fancy,” which was inspired by the 1995 American comedy picture Clueless, was released. “Fancy” went on to become Azalea’s most successful hit to date, and it was also her first record to rank on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States of America. It also peaked at number one on Billboard’s Hot Rap Songs list and at number one on the Dance Club Play chart in the United States.
The New Classic was finally launched on April 21, 2014, after a long period of anticipation and intrigue.
When it was released, the album opened at number three on the Billboard 200 chart, with sales of 52,000 copies in its first week in the United States. Since Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, The New Classic has been the highest-charting female rap album on the charts (2012).
The New Classic also had the highest sales figures for a female rapper’s debut album since Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday (2010), which peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 chart with 375,000 units sold.
Azalea was next featured on Ariana Grande’s track “Problem,” which was released on April 28, 2014, and was written by Ariana Grande. The song was released as the first single from Grande’s second studio album, which was also titled “Thank U, Next.” Soon after, Azalea appeared on Jennifer Lopez’s track “Booty,” which was released shortly after.
The New Classic’s fourth single, “Fancy,” debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on May 28, 2014, making Azalea the fourth solo female rapper to ever reach the top of the chart.
On the same day, “Problem” climbed to number two on the Hot 100, making Azalea the first artist since the Beatles to debut at number one and number two on the Hot 100 with their respective first two Hot 100 entries. “Fancy” was also the most popular song on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs list.
On June 24, 2014, Azalea’s song “Black Widow,” which features Rita Ora, was released as the fifth single from her debut album in the United States and was serviced to rhythmic contemporary radio stations. It eventually reached the third position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. An expanded version of The Additional Classic, dubbed Reclassified, was released in November 2014; it includes five new tracks, including the singles “Beg for It” and “Trouble,” which were previously unreleased.
Azalea revealed plans for an arena tour and a second studio album via her Twitter account on December 10, 2014, after reflecting on the year that had passed and the difficulties she had experienced in the years prior.
It was also on that day that Azalea disclosed the name of the tour — The Great Escape Tour — as well as the philosophy behind it, which is that she envisions herself as a “musical escape artist for people.” As previously noted, Azalea indicated that she chose the name of her tour to correspond with the title of her upcoming second studio album, which will also be promoted during the tour.
Iggy Azalea Personal life
In March 2015, while discussing her physical shape with Vogue, Azalea disclosed she had undergone breast augmentation, adding, “I did change something: Four months ago, I got bigger boobs! I’d thought about it my entire life”, saying she was weary of having to sew padding into her theatrical outfits and wanted to be able to wear underwear without wiring.
After originally committing never to disclose it publicly since she didn’t want other girls to feel horrible about their bodies, she concluded, “But then, I decided I wasn’t into secret-keeping.”
In August 2015, she talked about having a nose operation with Seventeen magazine, saying, “Your perspective of yourself may change a lot over time, so I think it’s crucial to wait and make sure it’s the correct choice. Plastic surgery is an emotional experience. … There are aspects that I didn’t like about myself that I changed through surgery. There are other things I loathe but I’ve learned to accept. It’s crucial to know you can’t change everything. You can never be flawless.”
In March 2018, Azalea was authorized for permanent residence in the United States.
She currently lives in Los Angeles.
Iggy Azalea Relationships
Azalea began dating American rapper A$AP Rocky in late 2011, after being acquainted with him through American record producer Chase N. Cashe. She revealed that they were dating in a January 2012 interview with Vibe, and it was at this time that she came up with the title for Rocky’s breakout mixtape, Live. Love. Live. She has the A$AP Mob logo tattooed on her fingertips.
She said that she and Rocky both had tattoos commemorating their relationship, but Rocky’s tattoos were not visible on her body. Rocky and Azalea ended their relationship in July 2012, with Azalea later removing her tattoo of the A$AP Mob crossed out, which she had for years on her arm.
In November 2013, she began a romance with Los Angeles Lakers basketball player Nick Young, who is now her boyfriend. GQ magazine published an article about Azalea and Young in their March 2014 issue. They shared a home in Tarzana, California, with their children.
They announced their engagement on the first of June, 2015. On June 19, 2016, Azalea stated that she and Young had ended their relationship following the release of a video on the internet showing Young bragging about cheating on Azalea.
She had a brief relationship with Moroccan-American rapper French Montana in 2016.
Azalea began dating American rapper Playboi Carti in late 2018, and the two have been together ever since.
In June 2020, Azalea stated that she and Playboi Carti had given birth to a son, whom they named Onyx Kelly. In October, she issued a statement in which she stated, “I’m parenting my son alone and I’m not in a relationship with anyone.”

See the photos below to find out more about her previous relationships and how she met him.
Iggy Azalea and A$AP Rocky
A$AP Rocky and Iggy were first linked in 2011, nearly a decade after their first meeting. The two had been dating for quite some time, and Iggy even went so far as to get some tattoos on her finger that were devoted to the Harlem rapper! It was back in January 2012 when she told Vibe magazine, “I adore him and that’s all there is to it.”
I’m not the only one who [had tattoos], and we have our own thing going on.” I’ll be honest with you. Only I have it on my fingers, and I’m the only one!” In July 2012, the two parted ways after only a few months of being married together. Iggy also had her tattoo erased as a result of their separation.
Iggy Azalea and Nick Young
By November 2013, it appeared as though Iggy had finally found her happily ever after! Nick Young, a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, has begun dating the rapper. The couple made their romance public in March 2014, when they were featured in an issue of GQ! magazine.
By June 2015, they had announced their engagement, and the two had begun sharing a residence. In the meantime, rumors circulated that Nick had cheated on Iggy, and the couple decided to part ways a year later! According to Iggy, “Unfortunately, despite the fact that I love Nick and have tried and tried to rebuild my faith in him – it’s been increasingly clear in the last few weeks that I am unable to,” she wrote on Instagram at the time of their separation.
Iggy Azalea and French Montana
As a result of her turbulent divorce from Nick, Iggy is said to have had a brief but amusing relationship with French Montana. The two were only together for a few months, during which time they supposedly went on a trip to Mexico together. The romance lasted barely a few months, and the two parted ways with no displays of hostility against one another in the process.
Iggy Azalea and LJay Currie
By January 2017, Iggy had been linked to music producer LJay Currie, who is shown in the photo above with the rapper. Similar to her connection with French Montana, the romance appeared to be little more than a brief fling that lasted only a few months. The two were still seen together in April of that year, but their relationship had quietly ended.
Iggy Azalea and Quavo
Iggy and Quavo were supposedly dating one other around the time they worked on the song “Savior,” which was released in 2018. It was never clear what the scope of their relationship was, whether it was platonic or otherwise, but Iggy did express how supportive Quavo had been during her darkest days in the music industry. ‘If I’m being completely honest, the only people who have ever been by my side have been Quavo, Kesha, and Demi [Lovato],” she remarked in a 2018 interview with Billboard magazine.
Iggy Azalea Boyfriend Deandre Hopkins
In 2018, it appeared that Iggy was in a relationship with Deandre Hopkins, which appeared to be short-lived. In August, she acknowledged that the two were living together in the same house. However, the rapper took to Twitter the next day to announce that she was no longer single.
Iggy Azalea Husband Playboi Carti
By the end of 2018, Iggy had entered into her longest-lasting romance since her engagement to Nick Young ended in a divorce. As a result of her relationship with rapper Playboi Carti, the two became nearly inseparable.
Iggy kept her connection a closely guarded secret, and she rarely spoke about it in front of others. After less than two years of marriage, Iggy gave birth to a son, Onyx Carter, whom she shares with her boyfriend, Playboi. Iggy eventually admitted that she was “parenting [her] son alone” and that she was “not in a relationship” by October 2020.
As for how Iggy is coping with the responsibility of raising her darling newborn son on her own, a source close to the rapper revealed that she is doing quite well. “Iggy is not looking to start a new relationship.” Carti is not someone I want to see again.
Her goal, according to an insider, is to “be the best mother she possibly can.” “She isn’t going to dwell on the reasons why she ended her relationship with Carti. Even while it’s heartbreaking, the fact is that she must move forward because failing to do so will jeopardize her development. It’s as simple as that. She has to step up because she has been and continues to be a very happy and proud single mother.”
