Uses
The itching that might be caused by allergies can be treated with hydroxyzine. It is an antihistamine, and its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the production of a certain naturally occurring chemical (histamine) that your body produces in response to an allergic reaction. Hydroxyzine may also be used for the treatment of anxiety on a short-term basis, or it may be used to help you feel tired or relaxed before or after undergoing surgery.
How to properly take Vistaril
You should take this medication by mouth as suggested by your physician, typically three or four times daily. It can be used with or without meals.
Your age, current medical condition, and how well you respond to treatment all play a role in determining the appropriate dosage. When treating youngsters, the dosage may also be determined by the child’s weight. You should not take this drug more frequently or increase the dosage that you are now taking it.
If your situation does not improve or if it gets worse, you should let your doctor know.

Precautions
Inform your doctor or pharmacist that you are allergic to hydroxyzine, as well as cetirizine, levocetirizine, or any other medications before beginning treatment with hydroxyzine. If you have any other allergies, you should also mention them. There is a possibility that this product contains inactive substances, which, if present, could result in allergic responses or other complications. Discuss the matter further with your pharmacist for further information.
Before beginning treatment with this medication, it is important to discuss your medical history with your doctor or pharmacist, particularly if you have a history of the following conditions: difficulty breathing (such as emphysema or asthma), high pressure in the eye (glaucoma), high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver problems, seizures, stomach or intestinal problems (such as an ulcer or a blockage), overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), or difficulty urinating (for example, due to enlarged prostate).
A disorder that alters the normal beat of the heart could be the result of taking hydroxyzine (QT prolongation). Rarely, a QT prolongation can produce dangerous (and in extremely rare cases, fatal) fast or irregular heartbeat, in addition to other symptoms (such as severe dizziness and fainting) that require immediate medical attention.
If you have certain medical conditions or are taking other drugs that can cause QT prolongation, your risk of developing the condition may be enhanced. Before beginning treatment with hydroxyzine, it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist of all the medications you are currently taking, as well as if you have any of the following conditions: certain heart problems (heart failure, slow heartbeat, QT prolongation in the EKG), a family history of certain heart problems, or a combination of these conditions (QT prolongation in the EKG, sudden cardiac death).
Your chance of having your QT interval becomes prolonged may also be increased if your blood potassium or magnesium levels are low. This risk may be increased if you use certain medications (such as diuretics or “water pills”) or if you have conditions like as intense sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Likewise, this risk may be increased if you use certain drugs. Have a discussion with your healthcare provider about how to take hydroxyzine safely.
This medication may cause you to feel drowsy, lightheaded, or distort your vision. Drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana (also known as cannabis) can make you feel more lightheaded and sleepy. Do not operate a motor vehicle, any machinery, or engage in any activity that requires alertness or clear vision until you are able to complete them safely. Steer clear of beverages containing alcohol. If you are a marijuana user, you should consult your primary care physician (cannabis).
Before undergoing surgery, it is important to discuss all of the products you use with your dentist or doctor (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).
It’s possible that children are more susceptible to the negative effects of this medication than adults. Young children are more likely to experience enthusiasm than sleepiness as a side effect of this medicine.
It’s possible that elderly people are more sensitive to the negative effects of this medication, particularly sleepiness, disorientation, constipation, difficulties urinating, and QT prolongation. There is a correlation between drowsiness and an increased risk of falling.
During pregnancy, it is important to only use this drug when it is absolutely necessary. Talk to your healthcare provider about the potential drawbacks and advantages.
It is not known whether this medication is found in breast milk. Before starting to breastfeed, you should talk to your healthcare provider.

Because of the potential for increased adverse effects, this medication should not be used in conjunction with any other topical antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine cream, ointment, or spray).
Hydroxyzine is quite similar to cetirizine and levocetirizine. When taking hydroxyzine, you should not use any of these other medications.
This medicine has the potential to interfere with a variety of laboratory procedures, such as skin testing for allergies and measuring the level of corticosteroids in urine, potentially leading to inaccurate test findings. Ensure that the employees in the laboratory and all of your doctors are aware that you are using this medication.
Overdose
