Top Gun 3 Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and More

Despite Top Gun: Maverick becoming the biggest movie of 2022, Paramount has failed to confirm Top Gun 3.

Miles Teller did acknowledge in July 2022 that he has been in contact with Tom Cruise regarding a potential third film. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer indicated in December 2022 that Cruise could be too busy right now for a three-quel.

“He’s in the thick of filming Mission: Impossible 8, and that’s all he can think about. We can talk once he finishes his work. But then he travels into space [for an untitled Universal film] and something else happens “He told The Hollywood Reporter about it.

As with the sequel, it will largely rely on if they can create a plot worth revisiting.

However, director Joseph Kosinski told Deadline in December 2022 that there is room for another film. “Maverick appears to have some gas left in the tank at the end of this flick. He’s not going to settle down, “He made a joke.

So, as we wait for Top Gun 3 to be announced (hopefully soon), here’s all you need to know.

Top Gun 3 Release Date

As previously said, Top Gun 3 has yet to be confirmed, hence no official release date has been set.

We hope we don’t have to wait another 36 years, and not just because Cruise will be 89 by then (probably still doing stunts though). But, as Bruckheimer mentioned, he could be too busy for another Top Gun film just now.

The sequel took around a year to shoot, so even if it were announced shortly, we wouldn’t see it until 2023. The earliest we expect to see the threequel is in the summer of 2024, but even that may be overly optimistic.

Top Gun 3 Cast

Of course, Tom Cruise will return as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, but in a reduced part, with Miles Teller’s Bradley ‘Rooster’ Bradshaw taking on more of a prominent role.

Val Kilmer’s character, Iceman, was killed off (not in a spectacular plane crash), hence he will not reprise the role.

However, because Top Gun: Maverick made scant (and tasteful) use of material from the previous film, there’s no rule of Kilmer – or any other original Top Gun cast member – appearing in flashback.

As for the others, now that Maverick has restored their connection, there’s nothing keeping Jennifer Connelly from reprising her role as Penny (particularly if a third film centers on Maverick’s adjustment to civilian life and stepfatherhood).

Aside from them, we might see more of the sequel’s Top Gun elites, such as Glen Powell’s Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, Lewis Pullman’s Robert ‘Bob’ Floyd, and Monica Barbaro’s Natasha ‘Phoenix’ Trace.

Top Gun 3 Plot

Top Gun: Maverick, like its predecessor, does not expressly set up any future film ambitions, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t drama to be mined.

Briefly, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell returned to Top Gun to train a group of pilots for a very tough mission: blowing up a nuclear facility in an almost impossible-to-reach location.

Of course, after much deliberation, it is agreed that Maverick will lead the pilots, and his squad will include none other than Rooster Bradshaw, the son of his late closest buddy Goose. The major source of stress in the film is Rooster and Maverick’s poor relationship – but don’t worry, towards the conclusion, everything is fine!

Not only do the Top Gun pilots complete the operation successfully, but no one is killed. On top of that, Pete reunites with his love interest Penny (Jennifer Connelly) and they actually ride off into the sunset.

All of this is to argue that there is no apparent solution to how a third film might reunite us with Pete at Top Gun. A scenario similar to Top Gun 2’s (in which he must train a fresh batch of pilots/recruits) is exceedingly implausible.

It wasn’t stated if Pete’s final mission in Top Gun: Maverick would be his last, but that was the prevailing feeling – after all, he was grounded once by his superior ‘Cyclone’ (Jon Hamm) before executing a trick that got him back in the cockpit (oh, Mav!).

However, a third film may explore what retirement would entail for Maverick and how he might cope with civilian life (before inevitably being brought back on board OF COURSE).
