Early life

Solána Imani Rowe was born on November 8, 1989, in St. Louis, Missouri, and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. She graduated from Maplewood High School in 2011.

In addition to her mother working at AT&T, she was raised by her father, who was a CNN executive producer. Rowe was born to a Christian mother and a Muslim father in the United States. Daniel Daniels, a rapper known as Manhattan, is her older half-sister. She also has an older brother, Daniel, who is also a musician known as Tiffany Daniels. She was brought up in a Muslim household.

Like the belief in one God, all of the pillars of Islam, and so on. I believe they are notions that will never leave me because they make sense to me in my heart and my spirit. It’s the way I communicate with God, and it’s something that has always made sense to me. However, wearing my hijab and going on stage, and appearing in videos with Travis Scott is not something I’m interested in doing at the moment. In the same way, I don’t want to be disrespectful because I have a great deal of love and respect for the religion, as well as my father and myself.

She went to a Muslim prep school after school every day after she finished her regular education. Rowe, on the other hand, was subjected to bullying in 7th grade as a result of the September 11th attacks, which caused her to quit wearing her hijab. She attended Columbia High School, where she participated in a variety of activities, including gymnastics and cheerleading, among others.

Rowe attended three different institutions after graduating from high school in 2008, before settling on Delaware State University to pursue a degree in marine biology. She eventually dropped out of school during her last semester, but she immediately began working odd jobs to supplement her income to support herself. Rowe took inspiration from rapper RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan when she created her stage moniker, which is derived from the Supreme Alphabet. In her given name, the last two letters stand for Zig-Zag and Allah, respectively, while the initial letter S can stand for either savior or sovereign.

Terrence “Punch” Henderson, president of TDE, was given a copy of her early songs, and he was pleasantly impressed by the quality of the material.

In 2013, after SZA gained attention with the release of her two EPs, TDE stepped in to sign her as the label’s first female artist, marking a watershed moment in the label’s history of female artists. It was with her friends and neighbours that SZA’s early music was recorded, in which they “stole a bunch of beats off the Internet,” according to her. SZA’s self-titled first EP See.SZA.Run was published on October 29, 2012, via her website.

SZA’s second EP, S, was released on April 10, 2013, and it has received overwhelmingly good reviews from music reviewers.

With Rihanna and Tyran Donaldson, SZA collaborated on the song “Consideration,” which appears on Rihanna’s 2016 album Anti. In addition to writing the song, SZA also appeared on the track and later played “Consideration” with Rihanna live on February 24, 2016, at the 2016 Brit Awards.

SZA’s first song from her upcoming album Ctrl was released in January 2017. “Drew Barrymore” is the lead track from the album.

After receiving widespread acclaim from music reviewers with the release of her debut album, Ctrl, on June 9, 2017, SZA went on to get the highest possible Metacritic score of 86 out of 100 for the album.

Ctrl debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 in the United States, with 125,000 album-equivalent units, of which 80,000 were pure album sales; the album was supported by a number of singles, including “Love Galore,” which peaked in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart and later earned platinum certification.

In 2017, Time magazine named Ctrl the best album of the year.

From August 20 through December 22, 2017, SZA embarked on a North American concert tour in support of the album.

SZA performed as the opening act for the European leg of American rapper Bryson Tiller’s “Set It Off Tour” in support of his album True to Self, which ran from October 17 to November 30, 2017, and was independent of SZA’s tour.

SZA collaborated with American pop rock band Maroon 5 on their single “What Lovers Do,” which was released in August 2017 as the lead single from their sixth studio album Red Pill Blues. According to Billboard, the track peaked at number nine on the Hot 100 chart.

This was SZA’s first top 10 hit as a featured artist on the Hot 100, and it was her second overall. During the following month, SZA released the single “Quicksand,” which was featured on the soundtrack for HBO’s Insecure. She also performed on the remix version of Lorde’s single “Homemade Dynamite,” which was taken from her second studio album Melodrama, alongside Khalid and Post Malone. In addition, SZA collaborated with Mark Ronson and Tame Impala on a collaboration album in 2017.

SZA was nominated for five Grammy Awards on November 28, 2017, including one for Best New Artist, which she accepted. She garnered the most nominations of any female artist for the 2018 Grammy Awards, and she was the fourth-most nominated artist in the entire field of artists nominated. Despite this, she did not go on to win any of the awards for which she was nominated in the end.

As part of the Black Panther soundtrack album, SZA collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on the track “All the Stars,” which was released as the first single. SZA is also a member of the Black Panther dance crew.

With the record reaching number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, SZA achieved her second top 10 success on the chart, following Maroon 5’s “What Lovers Do,” which peaked at number 9 on the chart. A collaboration between SZA and Cardi B was recorded for the album Invasion of Privacy, on the single “I Do.”

SZA stated in May of this year that her second studio album, “Brace Urself,” would feature the track “Brace Urself.”

SZA had an appearance on DJ Khaled’s eleventh studio album, Father of Asahd, on the single “Just Us,” which was released the same month. A music video for the song was later made available online.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, SZA stated that “Music is coming out for sure,” but added that it is possible that the music will not result in an album at this point in time. Additionally, she stated that the claim that she was preparing to create a trilogy of albums and then retire from music was “complete rubbish.” SZA also disclosed in the interview that she had spent time in the studio with Timbaland, claiming that “He played fucking Brazilian jazz-type beats, and I popped off to that.” She has also cooperated with Sia, with whom she is rumored to have written three songs, according to reports.

According to Vulture, SZA has previously stated her desire to collaborate on upcoming songs with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Post Malone, Jack Antonoff, and Brockhampton.

In conjunction with the premiere of the music video for “The Other Side,” which is a song from the Trolls World Tour album, SZA and Timberlake released “The Other Side” on February 26, 2020.

SZA signed a representation agreement with WME in March 2020 for representation in all areas. During a charity performance for the state of New Jersey, SZA performed alongside other musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, and Halsey in order to raise funds to help the state’s efforts to combat the COVID-19 outbreak. At-home performances were held on April 22, 2020, and all proceeds would be donated to the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund, which was established in 2009. On May 25, 2020, SZA expressed interest in releasing “a music dump” of previously unreleased material, which may feature as many as 20 tracks, according to a tweet.

When SZA tweeted and then removed the message, she was referring to Terrence “Punch” Henderson, the president of Top Dawg Entertainment, and saying, “At this point, you’ve gotta ask for a punch.” SZA stated in another tweet that “all [Punch] says to her” regarding releasing new music is that it will happen “soon.” This disclosed that her relationship with her label owner Punch (Top Dawg Entertainment) has been tense ever since the delays in the release of her second album, which was previously stated in an interview back in January of this year.

SZA returned with her first single as a lead artist since 2017, “Hit Different,” which featured Ty Dolla Sign and was produced by The Neptunes, on September 4, 2020, marking her first release as a lead artist since 2017. Following its initial appearance as a sample in the outro of the “Hit Different” music video, SZA released “Good Days” as a standalone song on streaming platforms on December 25, 2020.

Jacob Collier, an English vocalist, provided backup vocals for the single’s chorus. In spite of SZA herself claiming that the song was not originally intended to be released as a single, the song peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming her first top-ten single as a solo artist and becoming SZA’s first top ten single overall.  Both songs are likely to be on her upcoming second studio album, which is due out in 2019.

SZA was featured on the Doja Cat single “Kiss Me More” which was released on April 9, 2021. It went on to become the number one hit in New Zealand and reached the top 40 in more than a dozen countries, with top 10 positions in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, and Lithuania among its many accomplishments. Additionally, the song includes a music video, which was released the same day as the single and was directed by Warren Fu. The video is available on YouTube.

The cover version of “The Anonymous Ones” by SZA was released in late 2021. It is a song that was composed for the soundtrack of the Dear Evan Hansen film adaption, which will be released in 2021. The song is also featured in the film’s closing credits, which feature her rendition of the song.
