Is there going to be another journey to Serenity?

Season three of Sweet Magnolias is now available on Netflix! And it’s just what we needed to hear after the cliffhanger conclusion.

Upon the renewal news, executive producer Dan Paulson stated, “We’re pleased to be commencing on our third season for Netflix, and we’re looking forward to returning to Serenity.”

The cast also helped to spread the word on social media, with JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley all tweeting the news.

If you’ve been following Sweet Magnolias, you’ll know that Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen all have huge decisions to make, and whatever they do will seemingly influence the entire town of Serenity.

Thank Goodness for an endless supply of margaritas to talk about their difficulties over.

Life has clearly become more challenging for the trio, who are doing their best to negotiate life and love in their humble white-picket-fence town.

Yet, following a cliffhanger that could have big ramifications for all of them, let’s have a drink and talk about what to expect in the upcoming season.

(If you’re not up to date, major spoilers follow.)

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Release Date

Season three of Sweet Magnolias was confirmed on the writers’ room social media in May 2022.

They just posted the following message: “We’re returning to Serenity, everyone! We are delighted to announce that Season 3 of Sweet Magnolias is now available. I can’t wait to see you all.”

On July 18, filming for the new episodes began, and the team shared a photo of their directors’ chair backs with flowers and the show’s name.

“‘Should we begin?” they asked. “I’m so excited to welcome everyone back to Serenity for day one of Sweet Magnolias Season 3 filming!”

Things have moved forward steadily since then, and we are glad to announce that production officially ended in October, bringing us one step closer to that elusive air date. Sheryl J Anderson, the show’s creator, tweeted the following:

“We wrapped Season 3 filming last night. It’s been a pleasure to return to Serenity for another season, working with, laughing with, and learning from the incredible cast and crew. Our community created something lovely for you. I’m thankful to them and can’t wait for you to see it!!!”

The Sweet Magnolias writers’ room responded to fans’ inquiries about the show’s future, saying: “Season 3 has come to an end! Thank you to everyone who helped make Serenity possible this year. And to everyone else who is waiting: it will be worth it. Promise.”

It is unknown when the females will return to our screens. It’s also difficult to make an accurate forecast, given that the previous two seasons didn’t have a similar release date.

Season one was released in May 2020, while season two was released in February 2022. (this was largely down to pushbacks caused by the pandemic).

A presentation like this, which requires little special effects, can usually be completed in nine months to a little more than a year. Having said that, we don’t expect any new Sweet Magnolias episodes to air in the spring of 2023. (so between April to June).

As always, we’ll keep you posted as soon as we learn more.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Cast

Sweet Magnolias wouldn’t be the same without the central magnolias – JoAnna Garcia Swisher (as Maddie Townsend), Brooke Elliot (as Dana Sue Sullivan), and Heather Headley (Helen Decatur). All have affirmed their intention to return.

Tyler (played by Carson Rowland), Kyle (Logan Allen), and Annie (Anneliese Judge) will all return.

Chris Klein, who played the philandering Bill in season two, had a limited part. But he still has an impact on the main cast, so he’ll probably make a cameo or two… even if it’s just to check in on his many, many progenies.

Jamie Lynn Spears, who plays new mom Noreen, has also confirmed her return, posting photographs on Instagram with the caption: “Black hair for the summer can only mean 1 thing….. NOREEEENNNNN” and a season three hashtag.

In season two, Brandon Quinn, who plays Maddie’s on/off spouse Ronnie, had a redemption journey and was welcomed back into the family home. Hence, unless anything huge happens and a time jump occurs, you can probably bet on his return.

Meanwhile, teenage Isaac (Chris Medlin) has only recently regained his footing after searching for his birth parents in Serenity, and Cal (Justin Bruening) was arrested after flying off the handle as old anger issues resurfaced, although it would be unusual if he vanished without a trace.

Together with the show’s returning cast, some new faces will appear in season three. Rachael Markarian has previously appeared in Tales of the Living Dead, Top Gun: Maverick, and All American.

Jermaine Rivers of The Gifted and Dynasty will appear in a recurring role as Charles Perkin with Markarian. Jermaine shared a video on Instagram after filming wrapped of a “awesome” gift he received from the crew and showrunner as a souvenir of his time on site.

Charles is a new character in the Sweet Magnolia story, having not appeared in the original novels, so we may expect plenty of surprises.

Lastly, Jon Briddell of Doom Patrol is the most recent new cast announcement. He will appear as Jimmy.

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Plot

It’s reasonable to say that the third episode of the show has A LOT to cover.

Sweet Magnolia’s actor JoAnna Garcia Swisher told ET earlier this year that season three would most likely take off “near to where we left off,” adding, “I don’t think you can come back months later and say, ‘Whatever happened with Helen?’ and ‘Is Justin in jail?’ Why not go big or go home?”

Even before it was announced, showrunner Sheryl J Anderson made no secret of her desire for a season three, foreshadowing what awaits the bunch. Especially when a sinister person from Dana Sue’s past returns to torment her.

Dana Sue’s daughter Annie was approached at Mrs. Francis’s wake by a mystery woman who called her mother a “life ruiner” in the season two finale. By the end of the program, the same woman was caught on camera cutting Sullivan’s delivery van’s tires.

When the three saw the tape, Maddy, Dana Sue, and Helen recognized her right away – and they only had one thing to say: “She’s back.”

“I will just say she has a past in common with our ladies and some other persons in town,” showrunner Sheryl J Anderson said of this enigmatic figure.

“She’s been gone for a while, but she’s returned with a plan. She has returned home to settle some old scores.”

Dana is also attempting to mend her marriage with Ronnie after allowing him back into the family home. Will their reconciliation survive, or will he revert to his old ways, which included cheating on her?

But, Dana Sue is only the beginning of what’s going on, as the season ended on a cliffhanger when Helen was proposed to by her ex-boyfriend Ryan. She must now choose between him and her new love, Erik.

“I could see her going anyway, and they don’t tell me,” Headley said to TVLine. “Netflix is worried that I’ll disclose all the secrets for a good bowl of macaroni & cheese.”

Then there are the consequences of the brawl at Sullivan’s, with Cal being taken away by police when his anger management issues flared up after losing his job as a high school coach.

How will Maddie handle knowing this new side of Cal?

“It’s certainly something Cal needs to unpack and explore whether he handled prior events effectively, why he lost it when not losing it is so important to him, and what decisions he can make going forward,” Sheryl told Entertainment Weekly. “Not only for himself, but also for the people he cares about.”

On top of that, there’s the town’s recall election and the ongoing implication that Maddie should be the one to stand up and replace the Mayor if he loses.

If it happens, it will enrage the Mayor’s vengeful wife even more, and it’s only a matter of time before she digs up more dirt on Maddie’s loved ones (especially given how easy she is).

Finally, there’s Isaac, who now knows who his biological parents are, but their reactions to his presence have been as disparate as chalk and cheese.

Bill, who appeared to be the most fertile guy in Serenity, wanted nothing to do with his hidden child, whom, to be fair, he had no idea existed until now.

Will he change his mind once the dust has settled? Or will he be alarmed by Issac’s tight contact with Noreen, the baby mama to the love kid that ended his marriage to Maddie?

Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Trailer

However, there is no guaranteed release date, so we will have to wait a long for fresh footage. So we’ll be waiting a bit since filming has only just begun.

But at the very least, we know it’s on its way!

Sweet Magnolias didn’t even get a trailer until two weeks before the show premiered in season two.

However, if you return, we’ll keep you as up-to-date as possible. Promise!

Bless your soul.
