Aquaman 2, also known as Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, should have been out by now, but the DC sequel has been delayed until Christmas 2023.
The sequel was announced immediately after the original film’s box office triumph, along with a spin-off that has since been canceled. Aquaman is absolutely returning, and he’ll be accompanied by another important DC hero.
The sequel, like the original, is directed by James Wan and written by the previous film’s co-writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. Wan and Peter Safran, who is currently co-head of DC Studios, produced.
We may still have to wait a bit, but there’s plenty of material to keep us going in the meanwhile, so here’s all you need to know about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Aquaman 2 Release Date
To cut a long tale short, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be released in theatres on December 25, 2023, in the United States and December 29, 2023, in the United Kingdom.
It was initially scheduled for December 16, 2022, but was moved back to March 17, 2023, to allow for VFX completion. Warner Bros Discovery then pushed it out to the present date in order to spread out marketing spending until 2023.

The sequel was shot from June 2021 to January 2022, with additional reshoots in July 2022. Hopefully, this signifies that the deadline of December 2023 will be reached.
Aquaman 2 Cast
Of course, Jason Momoa will reprise his role as Arthur Curry, nicknamed Aquaman, and will be joined by Amber Heard as Mera.
Patrick Wilson has stated that he is reprising his role as Orm and has been “somewhat informed” on what is next for the exiled King of Atlantis, teasing: “I can tell you that even [Wan’s] designs for Aquaman 2 are pushing it even farther.”
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has also confirmed his return, following the setup for Black Manta to be the major villain of the sequel. “Black Manta will return, hopefully causing a lot more problems than he did in the previous one,” he hinted.
Willem Dafoe as Nuidius Vulko, Temuera Morrison as Tom Curry, Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, and Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus are among the returning cast members, while newcomers include Indya Moore as DC villain Karshon and Pilou Asbaek in an unspecified role.
The most exciting news for DC fans, though, is that the sequel will star Ben Affleck as Batman. It’s also been rumored that Michael Keaton would return as Batman after his appearance in The Flash.
Who knows, maybe Julie Andrews may reprise her role as Karathen…
Aquaman 2 Plot
We don’t know much about the narrative of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom yet, but we do have an official (short) synopsis:
“When an ancient force is awakened, Aquaman must form an uncomfortable alliance with an unusual partner to save Atlantis and the rest of the Earth from irrevocable disaster,” it says.
It’s unknown who the “unlikely ally” is, but it might be Orm, who was vanquished by Aquaman at the conclusion of the first film, allowing Aquaman to displace Orm as the true ruler of Atlantis.
As a result, the sequel is anticipated to begin in the early days of the new King Aquaman’s rule, dealing with the first peril that he encounters as Lord of Atlantis. Whatever it ends up becoming, Momoa indicated way back in October 2019 that the whole thing was “planned out”.
Aside from that, we don’t know much about what to expect in the sequel, although the writer has hinted at where we may find some teases.
“We’re not adapting any specific comic book tale, but if you want to know the feeling we’re looking for, pick up pretty much any Silver Age story with Black Manta,” Johnson-McGoldrick told a Twitter user.
Talking at DC FanDome in August 2020, Wan provided a hint at how the sequel will be different, with Wilson getting him to clarify that it will travel to “other planets”.
“The second is a little more serious, a little more pertinent to the reality we live in today. That is where it wishes to go “Wan elaborated.
Aquaman 2 Trailer
We’ll be waiting almost as long as Arthur was to reconnect with his mother Atlanna for a trailer. Expect nothing substantial until the middle of 2023, at the earliest.
However, there is a quick glimpse of the sequel in this teaser for DC’s 2022 slate (when Aquaman 2 was set for release in 2022).
