In addition to an older brother, Trent, and a younger sister, actress Elizabeth, they also have a half-sister, Courtney Taylor, and a half-brother, Jake. Trent is the oldest of the three children. Taylor and Jake’s parents divorced in 1995; they are the children of their father’s second marriage at the time of their birth. The Olsen twins are descended from Norwegian ancestors.
Michelle Tanner, a character on the ABC comedy Full House, was cast in the part of the twins in 1987, when they were just six months old. They started filming when they were nine months old. It was necessary for the sisters to take turns portraying the role in order to comply with child labour rules, which place stringent limits on how long a child actor may work. The Olsens continued to portray Michelle for the duration of the show’s run, which ended in 1995.
In 1992, Mary-Kate and Ashley shared the role of Michelle Tanner in the Full House crossover episode of Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, in which they appeared as Michelle Tanner and Ashley Tanner. During their time as Full House stars, the Olsens began participating in films and television shows (as separate characters) while still on the show. It was 1992 when the first of these films, To Grandmother’s House We Go, was released, and it featured cameo appearances by several other Full House cast members.
After forming Dualstar in 1993, the Olsens went on to make a number of films and videos with their brother and sister, including 1993’s Doubt, Doubt, Toil and Trouble and 1994’s How the West Was Fun. The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley, a series of musical mystery videos that started in 1994 and ran until 1997, was a hit with children and families.
Following the conclusion of Full House, the Olsens made their feature film debut in It Takes Two, in which they co-starred with Steve Guttenberg and Kirstie Alley, which was released in 1995. It was also in that year that they debuted a second video series, You’re Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley’s…, which continued to be updated with new episodes until the end of 2000.
The Olsens made an appearance on an episode of All My Children the following season.
In 1997, they returned to Sister Sister as guest stars in an episode of the popular television series.
The twins again returned to series television in 1998 with another ABC sitcom, Two of a Kind, which featured Christopher Sieber as their characters’ widower father and co-starred with the twins. Although the sitcom only lasted one season, it was broadcast in repeats on cable for several years after that. The year 1998 also saw the debut of Billboard Dad, the first of a new series of direct-to-video films starring the Olsens, which was also released in 1998. The Challenge, the final of these films, was released in 2003.
