Why The Walking Dead was canceled

The Walking Dead will not have a twelfth season, as we have known for quite some time. AMC confirmed the end of the series in September 2020, though they did add more episodes to the final season, bringing the final chapter to an unprecedented twenty-four episodes.

In a statement, The Walking Dead chief creative officer Scott Gimple indicated that the flagship show will terminate to make way for other stories:

“We still have a lot of exciting things to tell on TWD, and then this will be the start of more Walking Dead – brand-new stories and characters, familiar faces and places, new voices, and new mythologies. This will be a grand conclusion, leading to new premieres. Evolution has arrived. The Walking Dead is still alive.”

It appears like AMC and the crew reached an amiable accord, believing that now was the ideal time to stop the show. Given how long The Walking Dead has been on the air, this makes a lot of sense. Few written shows have lasted more than 177 episodes, so it’s best to go out while there’s still some interest than to wait until everyone has given up on the series. This would also not be the first time that a show has terminated in order to pave the way for brand-new spinoffs. Power just accomplished the same thing by commissioning four new episodes that expand on the original Power universe.

Ratings were probably not a big role here because they weren’t terrible enough to justify the cancellation, despite a recent decline.

The Walking Dead began to 5.35 million viewers in 2012, making it one of the most-watched cables shows ever, and at its peak, 17 million people tuned in live. The Walking Dead had a run of 75 consecutive episodes with more than 10 million same-day viewers halfway through season three, which was nearly unheard of back then, and especially now.

Since then, season ten has seen the show’s lowest ratings ever, with only three to four million viewers tuning in live. Yet, when combined with worldwide audiences and catch-up TV, The Walking Dead has maintained a high level of performance, and this type of degradation is normal in the age of streaming anyway.

In a recent interview with Collider, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) revealed that Gimple and showrunner Angela Kang were caught aback by the announcement:

“The news, which came in the middle of the pandemic, completely surprised not just me and the other performers, but everyone involved in the show from the beginning. Angela Kang and Scott Gimple have no idea either.”

“That came out of nowhere, and there was such a dramatic pivot,” Morgan adds. “I think they had Season 11 all planned out, where they were headed, and then it hit them: ‘We also have to conclude the story, in a manner.’ It caught everyone off guard, resulting in a tremendous pivot. Then they slapped on six extra episodes to season 10, and instead of 16, we’re going to do 24 more. There was a lot of information to process.”

It’s unclear whether Gimple and Kang finally agreed with this decision, but it doesn’t appear that the show ended totally on their terms, which means The Walking Dead didn’t just stop. After all, it had been canceled.

Morgan, too, was taken aback by the cancellation, and in the same interview, he expresses how strange it is to not be able to film a season 12:

“It’s fucking strange to think that this is the last of it. It’s become such a part of my life, and the lives of everyone on the program, that it’s difficult to accept that it will end in a year. In reality, I’ll still be here a year from now, but you get the idea. There is no Season 12. It’s strange… In a nutshell, I’m not thinking about the end yet, even if it’s close. We have a lot more stories to tell.”

So don’t worry, Morgan is correct. “A lot of narratives to tell” remains.

Will there be a Walking Dead spinoff or movie?

The Walking Dead: Dead City, also known as the Maggie and Negan spinoff, is up first.

This six-episode series will take place 12 years after the apocalypse, as well as a few years after the conclusion of The Walking Dead.
