Early life
William “Willie” Carroll Smith Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 25, 1968, the son of Caroline (née Bright) and Willard Carroll Smith Sr., a former U.S. Air Force veteran, and refrigeration engineer. Carnegie Mellon University is where his mother went to school.

DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince was a hip-hop combo formed by Smith and his childhood buddy Jeffrey “DJ Jazzy Jeff” Townes.
At a house party just a few doors down from the Smith mansion in 1985, Townes was performing and he was without his hype guy, so he bumped into Smith. Smith volunteered to step in. Despite their mutual attraction, Townes was disappointed when his hype man arrived late to the party.
