The Witcher franchise has reached a point where there is an abundance of resources available. The universe that Andrzej Sapkowski conceived of seemed to expand in scope on a daily basis, what with the release of the anime prequel and the numerous, numerous spinoffs that are now in production.
But there’s no denying that everyone’s attention is still riveted on Henry Cavill’s flagship program, and it’s not only because Geralt is so appealing to look at. The good news is that before season two had even been released, Netflix has already stated that season three will also be officially arriving sometime in the near future. In addition to this, it has been announced that the show will return for a fourth season, albeit there will be a significant cast reshuffle. More about it will be forthcoming…
Regarding the third season, that particular announcement was made public during Netflix’s TUDUM event in September 2021; however, considering how much time has elapsed since then, there is a wealth of more information to provide regarding the third season. As we prepare to return to the Continent and continue our journey through The Witcher season three, be sure to saddle up your trusty steed and stock up on as many coins as you can bring with you.
The Witcher season 3 Release Date
Strike up the choir! The date when The Witcher season three will be released has been revealed. To an extent.
Even while we do not yet have a specific date for the release of The Witcher, star Henry Cavill has assured fans that the film will hit theatres around the summer of 2023, with an expected time range ranging from June to September.
He announced the announcement during an event hosted by Netflix called TUDUM, although he did not provide much other information.

Nevertheless, the show’s executive producer Steve Gaub disclosed further uplifting information. Gaub made the announcement on Instagram that filming was completed and considered to be done. The executive producer of the show shared an image on Instagram of a skull displayed on a bookshelf along with the caption “And that’s a picture wrap on Season 3 of @witchernetflix!! ”
The second season of The Witcher premiered almost precisely two years after the first one did; however, this was mostly due to delays that were caused by COVID-related issues, not to mention an accident that Henry Cavill received while filming.
During my conversation with the showrunner, Lauren S. Hissrich, in the latter week of November 2021, she mentioned that the writers’ room had already started working on scripts for season three.
“The writers’ room has done a great job this season. To put it another way, the program has always been blessed with brilliant writers. However, I have the impression that this particular season… It was really interesting to see how the dynamic of the room changed when we had some new people come in, to have this sort of new blood: people who had watched the first season, who then had screened the second season, and came in with fresh, new ideas, who sort of challenged me on things that I hadn’t really thought about before. We had some new people come in, and it was really interesting to see how the room changed when we had some new blood.
Lauren went on to say, “What is intriguing, though, is that we finished the screenplays, and only then do we start talking to the actors and the directors, and only then do we get into the production restrictions of really turning these eight episodes into a full-length adventure.”
“It’s vital to me that the performers, for example, feel enthusiastic about their travels as well; that they understand the journeys that their characters go on. Therefore, all of those talks are going to start very soon.
It was announced that filming had begun by April 2022, when the show’s official Twitter account shared a photo showing Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan on set and seated in their seats. The photo was uploaded to the account’s timeline.
Since then, further first-look photographs have emerged from the set of Henry, which stretch up until the month of July 2022, when the production had to be interrupted at the end of the month due to Cavill contracting Covid-19. Since then, these pictures have been viewed.
Thankfully, they were able to pick up where they left off just a few short weeks later, and the shooting proceeded throughout the month of August in both the United Kingdom and continental Europe. The filming has officially come to an end, and Henry Cavill marked the occasion by writing a touching statement to all of the cast and staff members (via Redanian Intelligence).
“Oh, what a year it has turned out to be! I simply wanted to express my appreciation for everyone’s perseverance and effort throughout the challenging shoot. It is my sincere hope that every one of you will be able to get some much-needed rest. Henry Cavill, Sincerely and with Respect”
The Witcher Season 3 Cast
Alongside the characters who have helped make this program what it is, fan-favorite Henry Cavill will be appearing in the next third season.
- Freya Allan as Cirilla, aka Ciri
- Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg
- Joey Batey as Jaskier
- Royce Pierreson as Istredd
- Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold
- Kim Bodnia as Vesemir
However, on October 29, 2022, Netflix startled fans all over the world by announcing that Liam Hemsworth will replace Henry Cavill as the lead in season four, portraying Geralt himself, no less. This news came as a complete surprise to the fans.
Cavill made the following comment in a statement that was made public on that day: “My trip as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and regrettably, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for season 4.”
“It is with great pleasure that I announce that the amazing Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be succeeding me as the White Wolf. As is customary when passing the mantle on to one of literature’s most iconic figures, I do so with a sense of gratitude for the time I was able to spend within Geralt and an eagerness to see Liam’s interpretation of one of history’s most complex and multifaceted characters. Liam, dear man, this guy has such a lovely depth to him, so enjoy delving in and seeing what you can find out about him.
It is presently unknown why Henry Cavill has decided to move away from his role as Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher, however, rumors claim that his upcoming return to the role of Superman in the DC movies may have played a significant factor in his choice.
But whatever the circumstances may be, it does not appear that this will have a significant influence on the next third season. So who else will be back for another go-around in Henry Cavill’s last performance as Geralt?
If you watched season two all the way through to the end, you will also be aware that Ciri’s father, Emhyr, makes a comeback from the dead, so to speak. If the ominous finale of season two is any indication, actor Bart Edwards will play a significant part as the Big Bad in season three.
Expect to see people from this conflict return, as well as the mages. This implies that Mimi Ndiweni (Fringilla), Media Simson (Francesa), Mahesh Jadu (Vilgefortz), and MyAnna Buring (Tissaia) will probably all return for another go at things in season three.

While production on the third season got underway, a list of new members was being finalized, and it included some recognizable personalities from other major series.
To date, this includes the following:
- Robbie Amell, well known for his role as Barry Allen in the CW’s The Flash, will play Gallatin, the commander of a Scoia’tael rebel army that is battling for Nilfgaard.
- Shang-Meng’er Chi’s Zhang stars as Milva, a human huntress with exceptional archery abilities and a keen sense for self-preservation. Milva was raised by the dryads of Brokilon Forest after being orphaned by them. She is ferocious, skilled, and gifted.
- Hugh Skinner from Fleabag will portray Prince Radovid, who is King Vizimir’s (Ed Birch) playboy brother. According to the press announcement, “With his good looks and intoxicated charm, Radovid amazes with how perceptive he can be in political matters; yet, it’s all games until someone gets injured.”
- Christell Elwin, who plays Mistle on Bloods, portrays a member of the juvenile misfit group The Rats who are suspicious and looking for retribution; however, a chance encounter changes everything.
And who knows, maybe the show will even introduce some LGBTQ characters at some point… One of the most prominent LGBTQ+ characters from this franchise is Philippa Eilhart, and following her cameo in season two, you can expect to see a lot more from Cassie Clare in the role when season three arrives.
Lauren S. Hissrich also discussed how the show will explore Ciri’s sexuality. She said, “With Ciri, it’s something that I would say is hinted at in the novels, but you never really get into what is her sexuality, and we start to go into that more as well.
I’m glad that you brought it up because one of the things that I think that we try very hard to do with The Witcher is shown that fantasy is for everyone, and represents everyone. All of that is coming down the horizon, and it is fun. I’m glad that you brought it up. “All of that is coming down the horizon, and it is fun.”
Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, added, “I won’t know until we get there how I’m going to navigate how Ciri is navigating her own sexuality. You see glimpses of her trying to navigate that in the season, in terms of the fact that she’s almost becoming quite boy-like. […] But I don’t think she’s really discovered yet about her sexuality, necessarily, I think. It’s definitely something that she’s going to discover in potentially season three, potentially season
Because of Redanian Intelligence, we have reason to believe that the producers have begun the search for an actor to play a character known as The Professor, also known as Ralf Blunden. Those who are familiar with the Witcher canon will recognize Ralf Blunden as essentially an assassin who wears glasses and has a large vocabulary, despite the fact that he does not always understand the words he uses.
Unavoidably, he will find Yennefer and Ciri and confront them. (By the way, he is not to be confused with the Professor from the very first Witcher game, who was sort of similar but kind of different.) None of this has been verified, and it is important to note that it has not been confirmed.
The Redanian Intelligence is also spreading rumors that Safiyya Ingar has been chosen to play the pivotal role of Milva in Time of Contempt; but, until we hear it confirmed officially, we are going to treat such rumors with a grain of saltpetre.
However, Bridgerton’s Adjoa Andoh, who plays the role of high priestess Nenneke, may be absent from the proceedings. She is the only one who might have this role. The actress has acknowledged that at this time, she is unaware of the role that she will play in the subsequent episodes.
When asked by RadioTimes about the possibility of a comeback, Andoh responded, “Yeah, I don’t know.” We’ll just have to wait and see; those volumes are so massive, and the plots of the novels have taken so many different turns.
“Nenneke is mentioned in the texts rather frequently. However, it is contingent upon what they want to do with, you know, this version of it. It all depends on what the show’s writers want to do with the content from the novels and how they want to pull that off, so for now, we’ll just have to wait and see what they come up with.
It was subsequently reported that Loni Peristere (American Horror Story), Bola Ogun (Lucifer), Stephen Surjik (The Umbrella Academy), and Gandja Monteiro (Brand New Cherry Flavour) are all on directorial responsibilities for this season. This information was revealed in an extra statement made by Netflix.
The Witcher season 3 Plot
The following is an excerpt from the show’s official synopsis: “Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to safeguard his newly-reunited family against those who seek to destroy it,” it teased. “As kings, magicians, and monsters of the Continent strive to capture her,” it teased.
“Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers. Instead, they discover that they have landed on a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery.” “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza. They have no choice but to put up a fight and stake everything on the outcome if they don’t want to risk never seeing each other again.
Lauren S. Hissrich, who is in a position to be knowledgeable, has stated that “Money aside: S3 is enormous.” She is also aware of the financial situation, but it is quite evident that she does not wish to discuss it, which is very understandable.
After the mayhem that occurred at the conclusion of the second season, the subsequent run of episodes will concentrate mostly on Ciri’s fate as the destruction of the world, or as the savior of the world, if we ever want there to be a season four. Ciri is fortunate to have Geralt and Yennefer at her side now because there are a number of forces congregating to utilize the princess’s power for themselves. One of these forces is the princess’s own (now-deceased) father.

Hissrich also revealed that the next third season of The Witcher would be centred on The Time of Contempt, which is the second book in the Witcher series. In that particular book, Yennefer, Ciri, and Geralt make their way to Aretuza, where a coup ultimately results in the three of them being forced apart once more. It is important to keep in mind, however, that this blueprint is subject to modification, as is so frequently the case when moving content from the page to the screen.
During an interview with the Geeked channel on Netflix that took place after the release of season two, Henry Cavill said that things are going to be extremely different for Geralt and Yennefer as a result of the major betrayal:
“It’s not easy to make a full recovery from such a challenging combination of circumstances. It won’t be easy to forgive, and it’s going to need a lot of hard effort on your part. The most significant step that Geralt has taken this season is coming to the realization that he is unable to solve this problem on his own.
Anya Chalotra added her voice to the conversation and underlined that Yennefer has a lot to learn as well moving forward:
“It’s routine, isn’t it: she wears a cowl, and she’s lived the type of life that she’s lived with all of the rules that she lives by, and that’s Yen, and she doesn’t trust nobody. It’s possible that she’s picked up the ability to think things through more, but it’s going to be incredibly challenging for her to immediately adopt a new way of being.
We asked Joey Batey what he hoped was in store for Jaskier beyond season two of The Witcher when we caught up with him on The Witcher’s newest promotional tour in November 2021.
He admitted that it was a difficult problem to solve. “I have an incredible amount of faith in Lauren’s [Hissrich] judgment. She is modernizing old texts that were created in the 1980s by including features of our life now that people want to see shown on television. They have changed their minds and no longer wish to see dragons. They are interested in seeing dragons, but they also want to see how xenophobia operates on this continent. How are things when there is conflict and war?
“She’s really, very excellent at taking all these contentious issues and presenting them in a fantastical light,” I said. The continuance of it, as well as more investigation of the topics that are important to the audience, are the things that I am most looking forward to seeing in season three.
When we asked Freya Allan the same question, she responded with a more detailed explanation, which was:
“All I want is for [Ciri] to become a maddeningly skilled warrior. That is the most important point. I just can’t wait for the day that she is presented with a real silver sword that has a weight to it and is not a small broomstick [laughs]. [Cheers] That day can’t come soon enough for me, and I have a feeling that Ciri feels the same way about it too. Therefore, both of us will share the excitement.
And during an interview with Radio Times, Freya disclosed that she has already gotten a sneak peek at the scripts for the next third season: “It’s a tremendously thrilling experience. I have a feeling that this is going to be a fantastic season.
However, it’s possible that not everything will work out perfectly for everyone. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich suggested that there will be “a lot of action, some death… some death!” in the upcoming third season while she was participating in a panel at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival in Italy. Is she talking about the death of a prominent figure or merely about killing some monsters in a good old-fashioned way? I guess we’ll just have to sit tight and see what happens.
Hissrich addressed Polygon and what the elves and their growing presence imply for the upcoming third season by saying:
“Viewers will note that we focus a lot on the elf plot in season two, which is not as significant in [the major novel being adapted], Blood of Elves,” the show’s executive producer said in a statement. And despite this, I am aware that the Scoia’tael, an army of elves fighting in favor of Nilfgaard, will make their debut in the third season of the show. They don’t make the best impression either. It’s a rather severe and depressing plot if you ask me.
“As a result, I want to guarantee that we comprehended and humanized their contribution to the conflict. Where are they getting their information? Why are they engaging in this conflict? Even in the event that they become disoriented along the road. What would you say their background is? Therefore, the entirety of The Witcher is always at the back of our minds.
However, you shouldn’t anticipate any of this to be completely fixed in stone. Despite the fact that the writing room already has a plan in place, Hissrich has assured the audience that she would take into account their feedback on the second season and may even make some adjustments moving ahead.
This came to light on December 21 in a post that Lauren made on Twitter, in which she claimed the following:
“Today is the 21st of December. After devoting the past 2.5 years of my life to the production of the show, of course, I’m interested in hearing what the audience thinks now that it has been released for four days (not just critics). To say so would be an understatement. I simply cannot stay away,” she wrote in a tweet.
She also hinted that viewers would learn more about the circumstances behind Eskel’s death as well as the dynamic that exists between Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri as the show moves ahead with another season.
“I want to reassure them that I hear them and that they are not yelling into empty space. But I don’t have the time, and I shouldn’t take the time, to engage in a lengthy discussion about why Eskel had to die or when G, Y, and C will finally get together. (Psst S3).”
The images that the show’s producer Steven Gaub has been posting to his Instagram page from the set of the upcoming third season are beginning to trickle out, although they aren’t exactly revealing any huge new locations or scenarios:
Nevertheless, they did go through this beautiful wood, and it’s possible that they filmed there as well:
In terms of how the program will be structured, each season of The Witcher has taken a somewhat different approach to the format, so you can anticipate that trend to continue with the upcoming season three, which will include a compressed time frame.
Hissrich had to say, “Our seasons as a whole are really influenced by the tales that we want to convey” (via The Wrap). “So the structure is a wonderful illustration. In the second season, there was no compelling need to utilize non-linear narrative structures. Because of this, we decided to take a fairly linear approach, which gave us the opportunity to experiment with a variety of features of the visions and flashbacks, for example, that we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish if we had been working with timeframes. The third season, in my opinion, is outstanding.
“It’s based on a novel called The Time of Contempt, which, in my opinion, is a book that could be adapted quite simply. There is a lot of action, and there are a lot of things that, when you get to come to them, will just leave you speechless. Therefore, we are really letting it direct how the tale unfolds. For example, the events in season three take occur over a very little period of time. Because there is no pressing need for time to pass, it does not pass very quickly.
No matter what happens, you can be sure that the moral ambiguity that has always existed between the good guys and the bad guys will become much more evident this season.
According to Schmidt Hissrich, who was interviewed by The Wrap, “I think that for all of our characters, with very few exceptions, they are doing things because they believe it’s the right thing to do.” “They truly believe in the righteousness of their cause, which is something that we observe all the time in the real world. Nobody ever admits, “I secretly want to be a nefarious mastermind and rule the world just so I can be wicked.”
As for when the program will conclude, you should not count on it continuing past the point where the books are released. Andrzej Sapkowski, on the other hand, manages to crank out a few more books in each volume of his primary series than George R. R. Martin (sorry George).
“I have always maintained that I want to conclude our tales at the same place that Andrzej Sapkowski ended his,” Hissrich said. “I want to end our stories at the same place that Andrzej Sapkowski ended his.” “I just don’t believe that it’s necessary for us to continue making stories after he’s finished with them,” she said. The ironic thing is, of course, that he’s actually published two new novels since we started working on the series. Since then, we’ve been working on it. We are making an effort to be somewhat accommodating with regard to it.
“I’ve always stated that I will write the program as long as there is an interest in the show, and that won’t change,” she continued. It appears like there is a lot of interest in this right now. However, a portion of it can also be attributed to the fact that we are extending the universe in other ways. Therefore, either the animated films or through the spinoff that has recently completed production, there are options for us to continue presenting Sapkowski’s stories without diverting attention away from the primary storytelling of the mothership.
In terms of particulars, the passing of Roach in the second season was one of the most heartbreaking events in the series; in the third season, Geralt will have a new mount to ride.
“We wanted to make sure that Roach had a hero moment,” Schmidt Hissrich told The Wrap. “At the same time, it was crucial to us to get to that portion of the books when Geralt has a lot of Roaches.” “He has been living for a very long time, and the new Roach also goes by the name Roach. That is only the course of his life cycle.”
“I think that one of the things that I love so much that is so indicative to me of Geralt’s character is just how pure and true his relationship is with these horses, and yet also how he understands that they go on, and he needs to choose a new one. This is one of the things that I think is so indicative to me of Geralt’s character. Because of this, he starts to view the horse as a shining example of genuine friendship. It’s just the way that Geralt goes about living his life, in my opinion.”
The Witcher season 3 episodes: How many will there be?
We don’t know how long the third season of The Witcher will be just yet because Netflix hasn’t shared that information with us, but if the prior two seasons are any indication, we anticipate that it will also consist of eight episodes. However, considering that the Witcherverse is always expanding in scope, it wouldn’t surprise us if the length of season three was extended to 10 episodes. This would mean that we would get to enjoy even more witchy fun!
Following the release of the second season, Netflix disclosed that users logged a combined total of 142.4 million viewing hours in only the first three days of the show’s availability. The first season of The Witcher was The Witcher’s closest competition for that time window, with 49.1 million hours viewed between December 13 and December 19. Therefore, it is very clear that Netflix would not be throwing away their money if they were to add two or three additional episodes to the third season of their show.

Even Yennefer herself would not be able to conjure together a trailer where there is none, but as soon as Netflix releases the new video, we will post it right here.
