Sharma received his undergraduate degree from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, and then enrolled in the post-graduate program at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). During his time spent preparing for the civil service exam, Sharma stated that he would compile his own notes with the assistance of newspapers. He concentrated his efforts on drills to improve his public speaking and answer writing.
