This year’s billionaires were harmed by war, pandemics, and slow markets, among other things. The 36th annual ranking by Forbes of the richest people on the planet includes 2,668 of them, which is 87 fewer than the previous year’s list. They are collectively worth $12.7 trillion, which is a decrease of $400 billion from their value in 2021.
The most significant decreases have been seen in Russia (where there are 34 fewer billionaires than last year as a direct result of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine) and China (where there are 87 fewer Chinese billionaires on the list), both of which have been brought about by the Chinese government’s crackdown on technology companies.
Despite this, Forbes discovered that the wealth of over a thousand billionaires has increased over the past year. And in the past year, there have been 236 new people who have reached the status of billionaire, including the first people ever from the countries of Barbados, Bulgaria, Estonia, and Uruguay. The United States continues to lead the world in the number of billionaires, with 735 individuals worth a total of $4.7 trillion.
Among these individuals is Elon Musk, who has taken the spot atop the list of the world’s billionaires for the first time. China (including Macau and Hong Kong) maintains its position as the country with the second-highest number of billionaires, with 607 individuals who are each worth at least $1 billion.
