The seventh season of Outlander is coming, but unlike our beloved Claire, it won’t be as simple to go back in time to see how the new episodes pan out.

The sixth season of Outlander premiered on Starz/Starzplay in March 2022, carrying on the family’s exploits as they try to live a peaceful, comfortable life in 18th-century North Carolina.

Unfortunately, they never experience true calm in their lives; the Revolutionary War is also raging, which isn’t helpful.

With the rest of the family dispersed over the country by the conclusion of season six, including Jamie, Young Ian, Bree, Roger, Fergus, and Marsali, Claire found herself in grave peril.

So what can we expect from Season 7 of Outlander? Here is all the information you require.

Outlander Season 7 Release Date

Fans will presumably not have to wait as long for season seven as there was a significant 21-month drought lander between seasons five and six (thanks for nothing, epidemic).

Sam Heughan, Caitriona Balfe, Sophie Skelton, and Richard Rankin appeared in a picture posted on the official Outlander social media pages in April 2022, back on the Scotland set where filming had begun.

In fact, the executive producer of Outlander, Maril Davis, stated in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy that season seven’s filming had begun in May 2022. Davis mentioned that they were on “a fairly typical pace” and that it was going to be a “supersized season,” but she remained mum about when it could be on our screens.

We already knew that season seven of Outlander would have 16 episodes, double the number of episodes in season six.

Balfe also disclosed that they would be filming the following season for 13 months, which would take us up to at least May 2023, in an interview with Digital Spy for season six.

We correctly predicted that we would start seeing episodes soon after that. The start of the series has already been formally announced for the summer of 2023. The first teaser trailer, which you can view here, served as the confirmation.

And there are other wonderful things about Outlander that we can anticipate. The eighth and final season of the program will air after season seven, according to a January 19 announcement from STARZ and Lionsgate+.

According to Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for STARZ, “For almost a decade, Outlander has captured the hearts of viewers all around the world, and we’re happy to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper end.” However, there is still much of their compelling story to be told over the course of 26 episodes, as well as plenty more to explore of this dynamic universe and its creation story, before we end this chapter.

The 16 episodes of season seven that will air this summer make up the 26 episodes Busby alludes to in her announcement, and the last 10 episodes of season eight won’t likely air until late 2024 at the earliest.

Outlander: Blood Of My Blood, a 10-episode prequel series about the romance between Jamie’s parents, Brian and Ellen, is the genesis story she refers to. There is currently no information on casting or potential start date for that project even though it has recently received approval to begin production. Observe this space.

There is currently no information available on the precise release date for season 7, but we’ll update this feature as soon as one is made available. Of course, whenever we learn more, you’ll also learn more!

Outlander season 7 Cast

The events described in the sixth and seventh installments of the Outlander series by author Diana Gabaldon, “A Breath of Snow and Ashes” and “An Echo in the Bone,” will be the subject of season seven.

The actors listed below will return because those books involve all the main characters:

  • Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser)
  • Caitriona Balfe (Claire Fraser)
  • Richard Rankin (Roger Mackenzie)
  • Sophie Skelton (Brianna Mackenzie)

Heughan faced a particular hurdle because of the lengthy break between seasons: he had to maintain his fitness level as Fraser. Fortunately, it appears that he was successful (via Esquire).

“It’s fair to say that I genuinely can’t stop training; I really like doing it. I used to participate in triathlons and marathons since I was more into endurance sports, but Outlander really piqued my interest in more gym-based exercises like cross-fit and free weights. I genuinely love it.”

“The first discussion I had with the trainer at the beginning of the series was that Jamie’s obviously not in the gym; he’s a farmer and a warrior, so that’s the type of body we attempted to construct for Jamie when he was younger,” the trainer said.

“So many compound lifts were used to strengthen and condition the body, primarily the upper body, back, and shoulders. Fortunately for me, this meant that I didn’t have to worry too much about getting a six-pack. He is a very capable individual, therefore we had to create a body that was appropriate for the period.”

Heughan’s muscles will be joined by the return of several fan favorites, such as:

  • John Bell (Young Ian)
  • Lauren Lyle (Marsali)
  • Cesar Domboy (Fergus)
  • Caitlin O’Ryan (Lizzie)
  • David Berry (Lord John)

Some of the more recent cast members may return to complete their character stories as the new season must settle the cliffhangers from the conclusion of season six, including:

  • Alexander Vlahos (Allan Christie)
  • Mark Lewis Jones (Tom Christie)
  • Brennan Martin (Wendigo Donner)
  • Chris Larkin (Richard Brown)
  • Paul Gorman (Josiah and Keziah Beardsley)

We now know that a character from season three will return for the following season, albeit with a new actor playing the part.

Laura Donnelly, who had previously played Jenny Murray, will no longer be appearing in the show; Kristin Atherton, who has appeared in Doctors and Waterloo Road, will take her place.

Conflicts with his schedule are being given as an explanation for Donnelly’s absence. She also made an appearance in Marvel’s Halloween special Werewolf By Night, and she might have more roles in future MCU films in addition to The Nevers.

Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), Brian Fraser (Andrew Whipp), Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), Ian Murray (Steven Cree), Joan MacKimmie (Layla Burns), and Laoghaire Fraser are more past characters who have been confirmed for the upcoming season (Nell Hudson).

Some of these characters have likely already died on the program, as you may have seen. One of the many pleasures of our epic story is the element of time travel, which allows us to revisit some of our favorite characters in different times and places, and we’re thrilled to welcome back so many familiar faces for season seven, according to showrunner Matthew B Roberts, who teased how this might happen (via TVLine).

But there are also a lot of fresh faces, such as Loria Obianyo as Mercy Woodcock in Dune, Rod Hallett as Benedict Arnold in The Last Kingdom, and Chris Fulton as Rob Cameron in Bridgerton.

A number of new performers have joined the Outlander family, and in addition to our returning cast, we’re thrilled to welcome them, added Roberts. We can’t wait to introduce them to fans in our extended season.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy in July 2022, Alex Vlahos hinted at his comeback to the show and what that might entail.

It can’t possibly be over for Tom and Allan, he said. “So I will say, you know, on that Allan’s journey, there’s so much more that we shot that didn’t even make it into the episode, which is unfortunate. The adventure of the Christies is not ended.

He is a puppeteer. When people first meet him, he can appear simple or dull, but I believe he is nasty. He is a puppeteer.

In May 2022, a new cast member was revealed, giving one of the franchise’s most eagerly anticipated characters a face. The Craft: Legacy and Lost in Space actor Charles Vandervaart will appear in Outlander as William Ransom, Jamie Fraser’s hidden son.

In the novel, Lord John Grey, the ninth Earl of Ellesmere, who is portrayed on television by David Berry, raised William, the ninth Earl of Ellesmere, and kept him from learning the truth about his biological father.

In the new batch of episodes, the Hunter siblings from the books will also be introduced. Izzy Meikle-Small from Never Let Me Go will play Rachel Hunter, and Joey Phillips from Casualty will play her brother, Dr. Denzell Hunter.

When Young Ian arrives at their farm carrying a sick and injured William Ransom, the lives of the siblings are forever altered.

While Rachel is modest but demonstrates a fiery energy that Young Ian and William admire, Denzell has a medical background and plans to join the Revolutionary Army as a surgeon.

Outlander season 7 Plot

Big cliffhangers from season six’s finale will undoubtedly be resolved in season seven.

If proven guilty of the murder of Tom Christie’s daughter Malva, Claire, who is now detained in Wilmington, might face the death penalty.

Meanwhile, Jamie has just escaped Richard Brown’s Committee of Safety’s grasp and is on his way to rescue her together with Young Ian and John Quincy Myers, likely plotting yet another prison break. They both have experience in these situations (he earlier saved her from Fort William in season one, and she saved him from Wentworth in season one and the Bastille in season two).

The seventh season must also establish who actually killed Malva and what the Fraser family’s ramifications of the time traveler Wendigo Donner’s arrival are.

There are lots more peril to come for the Fraser family, too. Season seven will depict the Revolutionary War (also known as the American War of Independence) coming ever closer to Fraser’s Ridge than it did in season six, which ended with a hint at the nation’s escalating turmoil as Claire arrived in Wilmington.

An Echo in the Bone, Diana Gabaldon’s seventh book, is set between 1776 and 1778; the Declaration of Independence was ratified on July 4, 1776, and the war itself lasted until 1783.

Fans of the books will be aware that the Fraser family is dragged into the conflict and that Jamie will end himself fighting against his buddy Lord John and William, who is actually Jamie’s biological son.

There will also be a new family member, as Brianna revealed she was expecting her second child in season six. This could force Brianna and Roger to make important decisions about where (and when?) to start a family.

Outlander Season 7 Episodes

Outlander season six was shortened from 12 to 8 episodes because of pandemic production concerns, making it the show’s shortest season yet.

The bad news is that. The good news is that those four episodes have been carried over to season seven, which will include a whopping 16(!) episodes, as was already revealed.

In an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, Caitriona Balfe said, “What we did was we took the four episodes that we would have recorded [for season six] and we are now having them at the beginning of season seven, so season seven is going to be a 16 episode season.”

“I believe that by doing it that way, we can continue to do Outlander in the same manner we always have, by taking our time and letting the story develop.”

Outlander season 7 Trailer

Thankfully, we’ve already seen our first glimpse of brand-new season seven footage. The trailer is really fascinating since it is atmospheric and, dare we say, electric.

We typically see Outlander trailers produced when Starz (in the US) and Starzplay (in the UK) wish to provide a broadcast date for the upcoming series, and this one is no exception. At the end of the teaser, we learn that new episodes will debut in the summer of 2023.

No time to wait that long? Your displays will at least still feature some of your favorites. It’s All Coming Back to Me, a romantic comedy starring Sam Heughan, will hit theatres in February 2023 (precisely in time for Valentine’s Day) Additionally, a second season of his New Zealand-based Men in Kilts series starring Graham McTavish is in the works.

Alongside Sex Education’s Connor Swindells and Dominic West, Cesar Domboy appears in the 2022 drama SAS: Rogue Heroes. Later that year, ITV’s Scottish police drama series Karen Pirie, in which Lauren Lyle also starred, was shown.
