His involvement in other projects is not to blame.
If there were a list of famous Netflix shows that have been cancelled in recent years, Mindhunter would be near the top of it. The criminal series, directed by David Fincher, aired on the streaming site for two seasons before abruptly ending ahead of a planned third season. Fincher has previously stated that the decision to terminate the series was made by him owing to commitments to other projects, however, this may not be the truth.
The first season of Mindhunter followed Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany’s characters as they attempted to build a behavioural section for the FBI. The second season saw the duo researching the tragic Atlanta child killings of 1979-1981, while teasing the appearance of Dennis Rader, dubbed The BTK Killer. The third season would have been centred on Rader’s misdeeds. In a recent interview with the French magazine Le Journal du Dimanche, Fincher discussed the decision to stop Mindhunter once more, stating that there will be no third season and implying that Netflix took the final choice to end the series.

“I’m quite pleased with the first two seasons. However, it is a highly expensive show, and in Netflix’s opinion, we did not attract a large enough audience to warrant such an investment “Fincher explained. “I don’t blame them; they took risks to get the show off the ground, provided me with the wherewithal to do Mank the way I wanted, and allowed me to explore new territory with The Killer. It’s a gift to be able to collaborate with folks that are fearless. When our desires diverge, we must be honest about parting ways.”
Given his extended relationship with Netflix, Fincher’s lack of anger is unsurprising. Prior to Mindhunter, he was an executive producer and director for Netflix’s House of Cards, for which he won a Primetime Emmy for Best Directing for a Drama Series for the pilot. Fincher has directed Mank, a black-and-white picture on the development of Citizen Kane, since securing a four-year exclusive partnership with the streaming service in 2020. His most recent Netflix production is The Killer, which is inspired by a French graphic novel and stars Michael Fassbender as the title character.
