Reilly grew up in Chessington as the daughter of a hospital receptionist mother and a police officer father. She studied theater at Tolworth Girls’ School in Kingston for her GCSEs. Her paternal grandparents are from Ireland.
Reilly requested work from the producers of the television show Prime Suspect, and six months later she auditioned for a role in Prime Suspect 4: Inner Circle, which aired on ITV on May 7, 1995. She played Kathleen Le Saux, a young, unstable wife, in an episode of the Carlton UK Television period drama “Bramwell” in 1996. Six years later, she co-starred in the film Last Orders with Helen Mirren.
After her first professional role, she went on to play a number of roles on the English stage. Elton John’s Glasses (1997), The London Cuckolds (1998), The Graduate (2000), and Piano/Forte (2000) were the four productions in which she collaborated with Terry Johnson (2006).
“Kelly is arguably the most natural, dyed-in-the-wool, deep-in-the-bone actress I’ve ever worked with,” said Johnson, who composed Piano/Forte for her.
Reilly has remarked that Karel Reisz, who directed her in The Yalta Game in Dublin in 2001, taught her the most as an actor. “She stated,” she explained “He was a masterclass for me. If I hadn’t done that play, I wouldn’t have been able to do Miss Julie.”
By the year 2000, Reilly had become tired of playing comedic characters, and she intentionally sought out a position as the teenage Amy in Fred Schepisi’s Last Orders.
Following that, she appeared in a replay of Sarah Kane’s Blasted on the Royal Court in 2001. She was dubbed “theatrical Viagra” by the New York Times. In the French comedy L’Auberge Espagnole, Reilly co-starred with Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris as Wendy, an English Erasmus student (The Spanish Apartment). In the 2005 sequel, Les Poupées russes (Russian Dolls), and the 2013 follow-up, Casse-tête chinois, she reprised her role (Chinese Puzzle).
In 2005, Reilly appeared in Mrs. Henderson Presents and Pride & Prejudice, among other films.
Reilly’s first leading part was in the horror thriller Eden Lake in 2008, and she had a high-profile appearance on British television in Above Suspicion in 2009.
