Biography

Tracy Lauren Marrow, best known by his stage name Ice-T, is a rapper, songwriter, actor, and producer from the United States of America. He began his career in the 1980s as an underground rapper and was signed to Sire Records in 1987 when he released his debut album Rhyme Pays—reportedly the first hip-hop record to include an explicit content sticker.

The following year, he launched Rhyme $yndicate Records (named after his collective of fellow hip-hop artists known as the “Rhyme $yndicate”) and released another platinum-selling album, Power. Additionally, he released several other gold-certified records.

Ice-T co-founded the heavy metal band Body Count, which he introduced in the tune “Body Count” from his 1991 rap album O.G. Original Gangster. In 1992, the band self-titled their debut album. Ice-T sparked controversy with his song “Cop Killer,” the lyrics of which referenced the assassination of police officers.

He requested to be released from his contract with Warner Bros. Records, and his subsequent solo album, Home Invasion, was released by Priority Records in February 1993. Born Dead, Body Count’s follow-up album, was released in 1994, and Ice-T released two additional albums in the late 1990s.

Ice-T began his acting career in the 1980s with small roles in the movie Breakin’ and its sequels, Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo and Rappin’, before starring as police investigator Scotty Appleton in New Jack City (1991). He gained lead to credit in Surviving the Game (1994) and proceeded to appear in supporting roles in television programs and feature films throughout the 1990s.

Since 2000, he has been on NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as NYPD Detective/Sergeant Odafin Tutuola. Ice Loves Coco, a reality television show that aired on E! for three seasons (2011–2013), chronicled the home life of Ice-T and his wife Coco Austin. He began anchoring the true-crime documentary In Ice Cold Blood on the Oxygen cable channel in 2018, and the show is currently in its third season as of 2020.

Early life

Tracy Lauren Marrow was born in Newark, New Jersey, the son of Solomon and Alice Marrow. On February 16, 1958, Solomon was African-American, as was his mother Alice, who was of Louisiana Creole ancestry. Solomon spent decades as a conveyor belt mechanic at Rapistan Conveyor Company. Marrow’s family relocated to affluent Summit, New Jersey when he was a toddler.

The first time race played a significant role in Marrow’s life occurred when he was seven years old and became aware of the racism directed at black children by his white peers. Marrow surmised that he dodged similar treatment because his paler coloring led them to believe he was white. When he told his mother about the incident, she told him, “Honey, people are foolish”; her advice and this incident taught Marrow to exert control over how others’ negative effects affected him.

When he was in third grade, his mother died after a heart attack. Solomon reared Marrow alone for four years, with the assistance of a housekeeper. Marrow’s first encounter with illegal behavior was when his father’s Christmas bicycle was stolen. Solomon shrugged when Marrow informed his father, “Well, then, you ain’t got no bike.” Marrow stole bicycle components and made “three or four strange-looking, brightly-painted bikes” from them; his father either ignored or denied this.

Solomon died of a heart attack when Marrow was thirteen years old.

Following his father’s death, the orphaned Marrow was placed with another aunt and her husband in View Park-Windsor Hills, an upper-middle-class Black area in South Los Angeles.

Marrow shared a bedroom with his cousin Earl as he prepared to leave for college. Earl was a rock music enthusiast who listened exclusively to local rock radio stations; sharing a room with him started Marrow’s interest in heavy metal music.

Marrow and his high school sweetheart Adrienne welcomed their daughter LeTesha Marrow on March 20, 1976, and they continued to attend high school while raising her.  He met his second girlfriend Darlene Ortiz in 1984 while filming Breakin’ at the club where the film was shot. Ortiz was featured on the covers of Rhyme Pays and Power throughout their relationship. On November 23, 1991, Ice-T and Ortiz welcomed a son, Ice Tracy Marrow Jr.
