‘Heartstopper’ is still going strong, and Season 2 is (hopefully) just around the corner.

When one thinks of a comic book to film adaptation, one’s attention immediately goes to superheroes. Comic book movies have been a mainstay of our viewing culture for decades, whether it’s the all-conquering Marvel Cinematic Universe or the innumerable on-screen renditions of Batman or Superman.

Yet, as their popularity and webcomics grow, so does the possibility for lesser-known pieces to receive their due recognition. Heartstopper was distributed to a global audience on Netflix on April 22, 2022. The show is based on the same-named graphic novel and website.

The show was an instant sensation with both fans and reviewers, not only because it told a well-crafted story of love and friendship, but also because it paved the way for further on-screen representation of often-marginalized cultures.

The series depicts the coming-of-age experience of two young guys as they find their own sexualities in a sensitive and creative manner, while also providing better representation through an ensemble cast. As a result, Netflix’s decision to renew Heartstopper for two more seasons was a no-brainer. It shouldn’t be long before the second season of Heartstopper is released, with plot details and character announcements pouring in. Now, with that said, here is everything we know thus far about Heartstopper Season 2.

Heartstopper Season 2 Release Date

Heartstopper Season 2 will be available on Netflix, much like the previous season. Those who do not already have a subscription should consider getting one in time for the release. There is no exact release date for the season as of yet, but we do know that Heartstopper Season 2 will be released in 2023.

Despite the obvious plot and character information provided, there is no trailer for Heartstopper Season 2 as of yet. Despite this, given the quantity of news we’re getting and Netflix’s track record for trailer releases, fans may expect a teaser to be released sooner rather than later. How Did Heartstopper Season 1 End?

Like any excellent series, the final episode of Heartstopper Season 1 ties up various plot lines while yet leaving enough questions unsolved. With several of the characters spending the final episode trying to make amends, Nick’s (Kit Connor) choice to come out to his mother steals the show.

In a lovely moment of beauty bathed in the truth of their position, Nick and his mother, played by the wonderfully gifted Olivia Colman (The Favourite), enjoy a truly heartwarming and life-affirming scene that brings everyone to tears. These are the moments that distinguish Heartstopper, and fans can expect more of them in Season 2.

Beyond that, viewers will be eager to learn what happens to Elle (Yasmin Finney) and Tao (William Gao), who each go off to the art room to (apparently) express their emotions for one another, but actually express their fear of those feelings destroying a wonderful friendship. It’s a beautiful scene that adds to the reasons why Season 2 is a must-see.

When Is Heartstopper Season 2 Filming?

On September 22, 2022, Netflix announced that production on Season 2 of Heartstopper had commenced. The season was shot in the United Kingdom for roughly three months, and production was confirmed on December 2 with a post from the official Netflix Twitter account.

Heartstopper Season 2 Plot

Season 1 covers only the first two volumes of Alice Oseman’s source material, giving plenty of possibility for development. Fortunately, we can piece together important plot details without an official description thanks to conversations with various cast and crew members. The most important of these was revealed in an interview by Alice Oseman, who stated that the upcoming season would place a stronger emphasis on Isaac (Tobie Donovan). “Netflix will hate me for spilling the beans, but sure, asexuality will be covered on TV in a big way,” Oseman added.

I’m ecstatic. I’m hoping it will transform the world. I hope it doesn’t feel like a lesson when it happens in Heartstopper. You know Isaac, you care about him, and you’re about to discover something new about him.”

This is a huge step forward for a show that places a high value on its depiction of the LGBTQ+ community. The sitcom has sought to remove several gay representation tropes, and it appears that the mission will continue in Season 2. Lovers of graphic novels may have an idea of what else will be in the second season, but the rest of the fans may have to wait for a trailer before learning more.

Tao and Elle will also have to deal with their growing feelings for one another as they decide whether to stay friends or become more.

So, the drama is only just getting started.

But wait a minute, what if the drama was amplified even more by a surprising Young Royals crossover? Both young adult LGBTQ+ dramas have taken Netflix by storm in recent years, so it’s no surprise that Young Royal’s creators Edvin Ryding and Omar Rudberg offered the idea to Gay Times recently.

Knowing that we had to ask their co-star Malte Grdinger about a possible crossover, to which he replied: “It’s a little out there, but it could work. I wholeheartedly support it.”

August, on the other hand, might not like the notion as much. According to Malte, “he doesn’t like outsiders,” which could be a problem if this “crazy” concept comes true one day.

Heartstopper Season 2 Cast

Heartstopper would not be the same without Kit Connor reprising his role as Nick and Joe Locke reprising his role as Charlie.

Once the couple makes their love public, their best pals Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tao (William Gao), Tara (Corinna Brown), Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), and Isaac will be there to support them (Tobie Donovan).

Olivia Colman is also expected to return as Nick’s supportive mother, who learned in the final episode that her son is bisexual and in love with Charlie.

Fisayo Akinade will reprise his role as Mr. Ajayi, the teacher who allowed Charlie and Nick to spend time in his classroom during breaks, away from prying eyes, while Nick struggled to come to terms with his sexuality.

Nevertheless, it’s unlikely that everything will be OK, with Sebastian Croft’s Ben Hope – Charlie’s closeted and bullying secret ex – still around to cause havoc.

Rhea Norwood is expected to round out the roster as Imogen, who liked Nick despite the fact that he was in love with Charlie.

Joe Locke announced to Digital Spy and other media during the BAFTAs in May 2022 that he’d prefer none other than Jennifer Coolidge to join the Spring family. “I want Jennifer Coolidge to be my cool American grandmother,” he informed us.

Leila Khan has been hired as Higgs Year 11 student Sahar Zahid, following an open casting call for “a non-binary or female plus-sized performer of British South Asian origin.”

Sahar is best friends with Truham and Higgs classmates Elle, Aled, Tara, Nick, Darcy, Charlie, and Tao in the comics. Sahar is described as “no-nonsense, independent [and] a tad cynical at times” in the casting notice.

Also, Bradley Riches, who featured on the margins of the first season, has been promoted to the brand-new character of Truman student James McEwan.

Additional additions include Nick Nelson’s big brother David, played by Jack Barton, and Truman instructor Mr. Farouk, played by Nima Taleghani.

Bel Priestly and Ash Self will play Elle’s friends Naomi and Felix, respectively, and Call My Agent’s Thibault de Montalembert will play Nick’s father Stephane, as announced by Netflix in November.
