The Cable News Network, also known simply as CNN, is a news-oriented pay television channel that has its headquarters in the city of Atlanta in the state of Georgia. CNN Global, which is a division of Warner Bros. Discovery, is the owner of the network. In 1980, American media mogul Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld established it as a cable news station that broadcasts nonstop for 24 hours a day.

CNN was the first television channel in the United States to focus solely on reporting news when it debuted in 1980. It was also the first television channel to broadcast news coverage around the clock.

CNN had 90,1 million television households as subscribers as of September of this year (2018). (97.7 percent of households with cable).

Nielsen reports that CNN had an average of 580,000 viewers throughout the day in June 2021, which is a decrease of 49 percent compared to the same month the previous year. This reduction in viewership comes amid steep declines in viewers across all cable news networks. While CNN had a ranking of 14th among all basic cable networks in 2019, then jumped to 7th during a major surge for the three largest cable news networks (completing a rankings streak of Fox News at number 5 and MSNBC at number 6 for that year), it returned to number 11 in 2021, indicating that it had lost some of its momenta.

The broadcaster is famous for its exciting live coverage of breaking news, while some of its reports have been criticized for being too sensationalistic. CNN asserts that it is “The Most Trusted Name in News,” although the network’s efforts to be neutral have led to allegations that it presents a deceptive balance of information.

CNN programming has been broadcast internationally through CNN Foreign, which is viewed by viewers in more than 212 countries and territories; however, as of May 2019, the US domestic version has absorbed international news coverage in order to cut costs associated with programming. In Japan, where it was first broadcast on CNNj in 2003, with simultaneous translation into Japanese, the American version is also available. This version of CNN is commonly referred to as CNN (US). It is also available in Canada. Some islands in the Caribbean. And in Japan.

CNN experimented with running factual and reality-style programming during the 9:00 p.m. ET hour during the 2014–2015 season. Some of these shows included John Walsh’s The Hunt, This Is Life with Lisa Ling, and Mike Rowe’s Somebody’s Gotta Do It. After the cancellation of Piers Morgan Tonight (which had itself replaced the long-running Larry King Live), CNN made the decision to run these shows during that time slot.

Jeff Zucker stated that the purpose of this new lineup was to wean CNN off of its dependence on pundit-oriented shows and to attract younger demographics to the network. Zucker indicated that the 9:00 p.m. hour might be skipped during significant news events in order to provide more coverage of the story.

These alterations were made in conjunction with the launch of a new branding and image campaign for the network, which featured the phrase “Go there.” The documentary miniseries The Sixties, which was produced by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman and told the story of the United States during the 1960s, had its world premiere on CNN in May of 2014. Because of how well it did, CNN decided to produce follow-ups that concentrate on various decades.

Anderson Cooper The duration of 360° was increased to two hours, airing from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

By the year 2019, CNN had already produced at least 35 of its own series. CNN has aired other documentary miniseries relating to news and U.S. policies, such as The Bush Years and American Dynasties: The Kennedys. American Dynasties: The Kennedys saw the highest ratings of any CNN original series premiere to date, with 1.7 million viewers. Alongside the Hanks/Goetzman franchise (including the 2018 spin-off 1968), CNN has aired other documentary miniseries.

CNN has announced several new miniseries and docuseries for 2019, including American Style (a miniseries produced by the digital media company Vox Media) The Redemption Project with Van Jones, Chasing Life with Sanjay Gupta, Tricky Dick (a miniseries chronicling Richard Nixon), The Movies (a spin-off of the Hanks/Goetzman decades miniseries), and Once in a Great City: Detroit 1962-1964.

On-air presentation

In September of 2007, CNN began transmitting its programming in a high-definition format with a resolution of 1080i. [120] This format has been adopted by CNN as its standard, and it is currently made available by all of the major cable and satellite providers.

When the CNN Election Express bus made its debut in October 2007, it was the first time that CNN’s high-definition (HD) political coverage has been given mobility. The Election Express van, which is capable of five simultaneous HD feeds, was utilized by the channel for the CNN-YouTube presidential debates and the interviews of presidential candidates.

CNN completely redesigned its on-air presentation in December 2008, replacing a format that had been in use since 2004. This new look succeeded one that had been in use for the previous seven years.

Instead of appearing as a large banner above the lower third of the screen, the on-air graphics now have a rounded, flat appearance with a color scheme that is predominately black, white, and red. Additionally, a new box has been introduced next to the CNN logo for the purpose of displaying show logos and segment-specific graphics.

The scrolling ticker was replaced with a static “flipper” as part of the makeover. This “flipper” had the capability of displaying either a feed of news headlines (both manually inserted and obtained from the RSS feeds of CNN.com) or “topical” details linked to a story.

The next significant update to CNN’s website was unveiled on January 10, 2011, and consisted of a glossier, blue and white color scheme, as well as a relocation of the secondary logo box to the opposite end of the screen. The previous look, which was dark and flat, had been in use since 2008. In addition, the broadcaster started producing all of its shows in the 16:9 aspect ratio from that point forward, and the feeds used for standard definition were a letterboxed version of the feeds used for high definition.

The “flipper” was discontinued and replaced with a scrolling ticker on February 18, 2013. The ticker was initially displayed as having a blue background with white text, but it was redesigned the following day to have blue text on a white background to more closely resemble the appearance of the “flipper.”

CNN debuted its new graphics package on August 11, 2014, doing away with its previous glossy look in favor of a more simplified, rectangular design that featured the colors red, white, and black along with the Gotham typeface. The secondary logo box has been replaced with a smaller box below the CNN bug, which displays either the title, hashtag, or Twitter account for the show that is currently being aired or the anchor of the show. The ticker now alternates between general headlines and financial news from CNN Business.

CNN started using a new corporate typeface in April of 2016, which it dubbed “CNN Sans.” This change was implemented across all of CNN’s platforms. The typeface family, which was commissioned after consultations with Troika Design Group and was inspired by Helvetica Neue, includes thirty distinct variations with variable weights and widths to ease its use across print, television, and digital platforms.

CNN made the announcement of the launch of CNN Aerial Imagery and Reporting (CNN AIR) in August of 2016. CNN AIR is a drone-based news collecting operation that will integrate aerial imagery and reporting across all CNN branches and platforms, in addition to entities owned by Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner.
