Life and career
His parents, film producer Naomi Foner (née Achs) and film director Stephen Gyllenhaal were married on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, and had a son, Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal, on December 19, 1980.
His older sister, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, co-starred with him in the film Donnie Darko, which was released in 2012. In addition to being of Swedish and English origin, Gyllenhaal’s father is a descendant of the Swedish nobility Gyllenhaal family. Gyllenhaal’s father was raised as a Swedenborgian.
His great-great-grandfather, Anders Leonard Gyllenhaal, was the last of his ancestors to be born in the country of his birth.
Gyllenhaal’s mother is Jewish, and Gyllenhaal’s father is Jewish. He grew up in New York City, where he was raised by an Ashkenazi Jewish family descended from Russia and Poland.
Gyllenhaal has stated that he believes himself to be a member of the Jewish faith.
Gyllenhaal celebrated his 13th birthday by participating in a “Bar Mitzvah-like event, but without the customary trappings,” volunteering at a homeless shelter because his parents wanted to instill a sense of gratitude in him for their wealthy upbringing.

Because of his family’s connections to the film industry, Gyllenhaal was exposed to the industry on a frequent basis as a child. In the 1991 comedy City Slickers, he made his acting debut as Billy Crystal’s son, who he played to perfection. In order for him to appear in The Mighty Ducks (1992), his parents refused to allow him to do so because it would have forced him to leave home for two months.
In the following years, his parents permitted him to audition for roles, but they always banned him from accepting them if he was offered them.
He was given the opportunity to appear in several of his father’s films. “Bop Gun,” a 1994 episode of Homicide: Life on the Street, and the 1998 comedy Homegrown were all films in which Gyllenhaal appeared (together with sister Maggie).
Gyllenhaal also appeared in the 1993 film A Dangerous Woman (with sister Maggie). Jake and Maggie starred in two episodes of Molto Mario, an Italian cooking show on the Food Network, alongside their mother, who also appeared in the episodes. Prior to his senior year of high school, the only other film in which Gyllenhaal was permitted to appear that was not directed by his father was the 1993 children’s adventure picture Josh and S.A.M., which was a little-known film at the time.
The fact that his parents insisted that he have summer employment to support himself led to him working both as an assistant lifeguard and as a busboy at a restaurant owned by a family friend.
Gyllenhaal’s parents pushed him to express himself artistically, according to him “I do have parents who have consistently encouraged and supported me in many ways. They were weak in other areas as well. My family has always excelled in the areas of expression and creativity, and this has always been the case.”
The Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, where Gyllenhaal received his high school diploma in 1998, led him to Columbia University, where his sister was a senior and from which his mother had graduated, to pursue a degree in Eastern religions and philosophy.
He was a resident of John Jay Hall while attending Columbia. Gyllenhaal left after two years in order to focus on acting, but he has stated that he intends to return to finish his degree in the future.
His first leading role was in October Sky, a 1999 adaptation of the Homer Hickam autobiography Rocket Boys, in which he played a young man from West Virginia who is trying to win a science scholarship in order to avoid being forced into the coal mining industry. Gyllenhaal has since gone on to star in a number of other films, including The Revenant and The Hunger Games. In addition to receiving favorable reviews and grossing $32 million, Gyllenhaal’s “breakout performance” was noted in the Sacramento News and Review as “a breakout performance.”
Donnie Darko, Gyllenhaal’s second feature picture, was a critical and commercial failure upon its initial release in 2001, but it later became a cult classic.
Richard Kelly directed the picture, which takes place in 1988 and stars Gyllenhaal as a disturbed adolescent who has visions of a 6-foot (1.8 m) giant rabbit named Frank who tells him that the world is about to come to an end. Gyllenhaal’s performance was praised by critics, who noted that he “manages the tricky trick of being both blandly normal and genuinely troubled, frequently inside the same scene,” as Gary Mairs of Culture Vulture put it.
The next year, following the critical success of Donnie Darko, Gyllenhaal starred as Pilot Kelston in the 2002 film Highway, with Jared Leto. In the words of one critic, his portrayal was “silly, clichéd, and right out of a video game.”
Gyllenhaal found greater success in 2002 when he co-starred with Jennifer Aniston in The Good Girl, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He also appeared in the film Lovely and Amazing, which starred Catherine Keener.
In both films, he portrays a mentally disturbed individual who embarks on a risky affair with a more mature female lead. The characters were later referred to as “teenager in transition” portrayals by Gyllenhaal.
Gillian Haal later appeared in the romantic comedy Bubble Boy, which was partially based on the life of David Vetter and was released by Touchstone Pictures in 2012. The film follows the exploits of the title character as he attempts to track down and marry the love of his life before she marries the wrong man. Some critics lambasted the film, labeling it “stupid and devoid of any redeeming characteristics.”
As a follow-up to Bubble Boy, Gyllenhaal appeared in the film Moonlight Mile (2002), in which he co-starred with Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, and Ellen Pompeo as a young man dealing with the death of his fiancée and the grief of her parents. The tale, which has garnered mixed reception, is partially based on the events of writer-director Brad Silberling following the murder of his girlfriend, Rebecca Schaeffer.
Gyllenhaal made his professional stage debut in 2002 when he appeared in a revival of This Is Our Youth, directed by Kenneth Lonergan, at the Garrick Theater in London.
“Every actor I admire has done theater work, so I felt I had to give it a shot,” Gyllenhaal explained. The play was performed in London’s West End for eight weeks, and Gyllenhaal got positive reviews as well as an Evening Standard Theater Award for Outstanding Newcomer for his performance.
Gyllenhaal was almost hired as Spider-Man in 2004’s Spider-Man 2 due to director Sam Raimi’s concerns about the health of Tobey Maguire, who played the character in the original film.
But Maguire recovered and the sequel was filmed without Gyllenhaal’s participation. The two actors eventually collaborated on the film Brothers (2009), and their physical resemblance is so striking that Gyllenhaal has jokingly complained about cab drivers frequently referring to him as “Spider-Man.”In 2003, he also auditioned for the role of Batman in the superhero picture Batman Begins, and he came very close to landing the role, but Christian Bale was cast in the role instead.
Gillian Haal’s first film role was in the 2004 science fiction movie The Day After Tomorrow when he co-starred with Dennis Quaid in the role of his father.
The drama Proof, in which Gyllenhaal co-starred with Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins, premiered in 2005. In the film, Gyllenhaal played a graduate student in mathematics who attempts to persuade Paltrow’s character to publish a revolutionary proof to a problem that has been perplexing the mathematicians’ community.
The picture had a generally favorable reception from the audience. Gyllenhaal also appeared in the film Jarhead, directed by Sam Mendes, in which he played a vicious U.S. Marine during the first Gulf War. According to Stephen Hunter of The Washington Post, Gyllenhaal’s acting “lets us feel his character’s intelligence,” and he also writes that “he doesn’t seem resentful of the camera’s focus when it goes to others.” The film has received positive reviews.
In the film Brokeback Mountain (2005), Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger play young men who meet while working as sheepherders and begin a sexual connection that lasts for 20 years, beginning in the summer of 1963 and ending in the summer of 2005.
Even though there was disagreement on the sexual orientation of the characters, the film was frequently referred to as “the gay cowboy movie” in the media and on the internet. The film received a slew of awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival.

Gyllenhaal was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the picture, which won three Academy Awards and garnered him a nod, but he lost to George Clooney for Syriana. In addition, the film received four Golden Globe nominations and four British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs), with Gyllenhaal taking home the award for Best Supporting Actor.
In 2006, he and Ledger were nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Kiss. Gyllenhaal was invited to become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences shortly after the 2006 Academy Awards in honor of his acting career.
Gyllenhaal had mixed thoughts regarding the experience of working with filmmaker Ang Lee on Brokeback Mountain, but he typically praised rather than criticized the director’s directorial style in general. However, despite Gyllenhaal’s dissatisfaction with the way Lee tended to disengage from his actors once production began, the actor commended Lee’s supportive direction of the actors and sensitive approach to the material.
In addition, at the Directors Guild of America Awards on January 28, 2006, Gyllenhaal complimented Lee for “his humility and his appreciation for everyone in his immediate environment.”
When Gyllenhaal was asked about his kissing scenes with Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, he responded, “As actors, I believe we should embrace the moments that make us feel the most uncomfortable.” The more intimate scenes with Ledger were compared to “performing a sex scene with a woman i’m not very attracted to,” according to Gyllenhaal when asked about the scenes.
Following the release of the film Brokeback Mountain, speculations began to swirl about the actor’s sexual preference. When Gyllenhaal was asked about such rumors during an interview, he responded, “You know it’s flattering when there’s a rumor that says I’m bisexual,” Gyllenhaal stated. It implies I’ll be able to take on a wider range of roles. I’m open to being addressed by any name people want to give me.
My sexual attraction to guys has never really been strong, but I don’t believe it would make me feel uncomfortable if it was.
Earlier this year, Gyllenhaal appeared in the thriller Velvet Buzzsaw, in which he played art critic Mort Vandewalt, and re-teamed with Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy.
The film had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was released by Netflix in 2019. Gyllenhaal was “enjoying another of those cartoonishly ridiculous performances,” according to Variety’s Peter Debrudge. “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” a superhero film based on the comic book character Mysterio / Quentin Beck, was released the following year.
It was Gyllenhaal’s second appearance as Mysterio / Quentin Beck, and it was set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was one of the most successful pictures of the year in terms of box office receipts.

Aside from that, he worked on behalf of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.
He has, on the other hand, stated that “It irritates me when actors discuss politics; I’m a political person and I make decisions in my films that I believe are political in nature. I aim to communicate my ideas through my work. Young actors, whether intentionally or unintentionally, wield tremendous influence.”
In an interview, he stated that “it’s a sad period when actors are politicians and politicians are actors,” and that “performers are politicians and politicians are actors.” Gyllenhaal endorsed Beto O’Rourke in the 2018 midterm elections, which took place in November.
During a Facebook post, which included a picture of him wearing a “BETO” shirt and a lengthy commentary in which he also endorsed Stacey Abrams, Andrew Gillum, Kyrsten Sinema, and Jacky Rosen in their respective Senate or gubernatorial contests, he expressed his support for all of the candidates.

Jake Gyllenhaal Wife
Jake Gyllenhaal is still not married and has been seeing Jeanne Cadieu, his long-term lover, since late last year. In general, the two had kept their connection very covert throughout the course of their romance, however, on May 6, 2021, the two were photographed holding hands during a rare public outing in New York City.
In September 2021, the two made their red carpet debut at the New York Film Festival for the premiere of The Lost Daughter, which took place in September of that year. They posed with Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal and her husband Peter Sarsgaard, who also appeared in the photo.
The past several years have seen Gyllenhaal enter into increasingly prominent partnerships. He has been romantically linked to Kristen Dunst, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Taylor Swift, and a host of other celebrities.
In a May 2020 interview with Vogue U.K., the actor, who turned 40 years old last December, discussed some of his personal life observations. He stated that as he has grown older, he has gotten more invested in living his life rather than being engrossed in his career and the entertainment industry.
“I’m more engaged in my personal life than I am in my professional life. I’ve reached a stage in my professional life where I’m hungry in a different way than I used to be. I’ve realized how much of my life I’ve missed out on as a result of my dedication to that job and that concept.”
He also revealed to Vogue U.K. that he hopes to become a father in the near future.
“Of course I do,” he replied. “Yes, of course, I do.” “I most certainly do. I believe this is the primary reason why I perceive the show’s conclusion in the manner in which I do. I am aware that this is why I perceive the show’s conclusion in the way I do.” “I’m not someone who has ever resided in a situation where I’ve been completely certain of what was going to happen next,” he concluded. He trailed off in the middle of the interview, saying, “But you have to be willing to accept it.” And there hasn’t been another occasion in my life when I could say that with confidence…”
Gyllenhaal may not want to share any further information about Jeanne Cadieu because of his extremely prominent partnerships, but it still begs the question: who is Jeanne Cadieu, exactly? Here is what we know about her based on a few posts she has made to her Instagram account (she and Gyllenhaal keep their relationship off social media).
She’s a 25-year-old French model
Cadieu, according to W magazine, is represented by IMG Models in New York. Her Instagram is crammed with what appear to be professional photographs taken throughout her career.
Throughout their relationship, the two have maintained their individuality. The actress has not dedicated any postings to Gyllenhaal on her Instagram, and the actor has not posted anything about Cadieu either.
Taylor Swift’s re-recorded Red album was released on the same day that Gyllenhaal’s long-running proclivity for dating younger women was revealed in a new “All Too Well” lyric (“And I was never good at telling jokes but the punch line goes / I’ll get older but your lovers stay my age,” Swift sang). However, neither actor commented on the subject on social media on the day that Swift’s re-recorded Red album was released.
Jenny Lewis
A brief love relationship existed between Gyllenhaal and Jenny Lewis, the former frontwoman of the indie rock band Rilo Kiley, during the year 2001. Since then, he and Lewis have remained friends, keeping in touch and supporting each other’s endeavors. In 2011, Gyllenhaal brought Lewis along as his date to the Golden Globes in Los Angeles.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Kirsten Dunst
Gyllenhaal and actress Kirsten Dunst’s romance is said to have taken off at a breakneck pace, with the couple moving in together and adopting a puppy before their second wedding anniversary. When they announced their separation, a representative issued a statement declaring they remained “the greatest of friends.” Years later, in 2009, Dunst told Allure magazine that “it would be wonderful to see him, but we’re not good friends,” despite the fact that the two were once pals. RIP.
Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman
In 2006, Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal dated for a few months and looked adorable together. However, according to E!, the couple had an even shorter relationship in 2002. In the years following their divorce in 2006, Gyllenhaal and Portman remained friends, and they even appeared on the same screen in 2009’s Brothers.
Even when presenting Portman with the Desert Palm Achievement Award in 2011, Gyllenhaal used the opportunity to lightly mock her by saying, “She’s a vegan, which makes it incredibly frustrating when you’re trying to find a restaurant that serves vegan food.”
Jake Gyllenhaal ex-Girlfriend Reese Witherspoon
This one comes in with a vengeance. Gillian’s passion for Gyllenspoon was truly something extraordinary. Following her divorce from Ryan Philippe, Witherspoon began dating Gyllenhaal in early 2007, and the two have been open about their relationship in the press ever since. In an interview with Vogue magazine in October 2008, she stated, “He’s been tremendously helpful.
To summarize, I’m quite content with my life, and I’m extremely fortunate to have a large number of extremely supportive individuals in my life that genuinely care about me. After all, that’s really all anyone can aspire for in life. “I have been quite fortunate in that regard.”
The actor is said to have spent a lot of time with Witherspoon’s children, Ava and Deacon, and even took the family up to Ojai on weekends, where they’d stay on Witherspoon’s farm and enjoy the company of other people while growing veggies and having fun.
When they announced their breakup in late 2009, fans were devastated. However, a source told E! that their spark just “fizzed” at the time.
In 2016, Gyllenhaal gushed over his ex, telling Entertainment Weekly that Witherspoon is, “like I would say about most of the women I’m good friends with or have had relationships with throughout my life, one of the brightest, strongest people I’ve ever known.””
Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift Relationship
And with that, the Taylor age has officially begun. Swift and Gyllenhaal began dating in 2010 when they were first spotted together in New York City. Their relationship was described as “fall-like.” It was October, they were dressed in scarves, and one of their first dates, according to E!, was a trip to an apple field. The phrase “cozy-cute” does not come close to describing this.
That year, they are said to have enjoyed Thanksgiving with Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie before continuing their celebrations in Nashville to conclude the festivities. The couple was photographed walking arm-in-arm down a Brooklyn sidewalk around this time, both with huge smiles on their faces and Swift holding nothing other than a maple latte in her left hand, according to reports at the time.
Of course, their romance came to an end in December of 2010. However, if the lyrics of “All Too Well (10-Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)” are taken as a truthful description of their affair, they briefly reconnected in March 2011, according to Taylor.
Anna Kendrick, Minka Kelly, Jessica Lowndes
While rumors of romances with actors such as Anna Kendrick (another End of Watch co-star), Minka Kelly of Friday Night Lights, and Jessica Lowndes of 90210 circulated during this time period, none of these relationships were ever confirmed by the performers themselves. Gyllenhaal was photographed holding hands with an unidentified woman in New York City the same year, however, no information about their connection was revealed at the time.
Jake Gyllenhaal Ex-Girlfriend Alyssa Miller
After meeting Gyllenhaal at the gym, according to reports (this may just be the motivation I need to start working out), Alyssa Miller and Gyllenhaal began dating. The relationship lasted approximately six months, according to reports. The couple met in New York City, but they reportedly ended their relationship when Gyllenhaal relocated to Los Angeles to begin filming Southpaw.
