Biography

Eric Bugenhagen (born December 21, 1987) is a former collegiate wrestler and professional wrestler in the United States. He is a WWE performer who goes by the ring name Rick Boogs on the SmackDown brand.

He is a two-time WWE 24/7 Champion, having won the championship under the ring name Joseph Average on two occasions.

Amateur wrestling career

Bugenhagen wrestled for NCAA Division I the University of Wisconsin under Barry Davis after earning a state championship at Franklin High School in Franklin, Wisconsin. From 2006 to 2011, Bugenhagen wrestled for the Wisconsin Badgers, starting at 184 pounds in his sophomore year and moving up to heavyweight in his junior and senior years.

Bugenhagen qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, in 2010 and 2011, at Omaha, Nebraska, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, respectively. He wrestled in a U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and went 2-4 in the NCAAs. He earned a kinesiology degree and went on to work as a wrestling coach for his alma mater following graduation.

Professional wrestling career

Bugenhagen made his professional wrestling debut on WWE NXT Live on October 19, 2017, where he lost a singles bout against Lars Sullivan. Following a lengthy layoff due to injuries, he returned to NXT live events under the ring moniker Ric Boog. In his NXT debut on February 6, 2019, Bugenhagen lost to Drew Gulak under his own name.

As Rik Bugez, he competed in a 20-man battle royal on WWE Worlds Collide on May 1, 2019, against other notable superstars such as Brian Kendrick, Akira Tozawa, Drew Gulak, Tyler Bate, and the winner Roderick Strong.

On WWE NXT Live on February 21, 2019, Bugez joined up with Denzel Dejournette to fight the NXT Tag Team Champions at the time, The Viking Raiders, however, they were defeated (Ivar and Erik). Bugez’s most memorable match of his career took place on WWE NXT Live on February 22, 2020, when he wrestled against Finn Balor in a losing effort.

Bugez was one of many NXT performers utilized as a part of a temporary audience on Raw at the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, and he made multiple appearances as an extra in the main shows.

Bugez portrayed Joseph Average/The Nightpanther, an Old Spice representative, in many backstage advertisements at Fastlane and after WrestleMania 37, during which he defeated R-Truth and Akira Tozawa to win the WWE 24/7 Championship twice, however, the second reign is not recognized by WWE.

Bugez, now known as Rick Boogs, made his SmackDown debut on May 21, 2021, by bringing Shinsuke Nakamura to the ring with an electric guitar.

On the August 20 episode of SmackDown, he made his ring debut, teaming up with Nakamura to defeat Apollo Crews and Commander Azeez.

On January 17, 2020, Bugenhagen debuted on the independent sector as Rik Bugez at EVOLVE 143, a show promoted by Evolve under their partnership with WWE, when he faced Joe Gacy in a losing effort.

Bugez won his debut match at EVOLVE 144 the next night, defeating Anthony Greene.
