50 Cent is an American rapper, producer, actor, and businessman. He was born and raised in New York City. At the time that this article was written, 50 Cent’s net worth was forty million dollars. In the course of his career to this point, 50 Cent has made at least 260 million dollars from a variety of pursuits, the most notable of which include selling records, going on tour, and signing multiple partnerships with different brands. Unfortunately, he has also spent lavishly (particularly on real estate, automobiles, and lawsuits), which led to his filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July of 2015. This was caused by his spending a lot of money on real estate, vehicles, and lawsuits. There will be a lot more discussion on that filing later on in this post. Before he declared bankruptcy, 50 Cent’s worth was estimated to be over $100 million at its highest point.

Early Life
Curtis James Jackson III, better known as 50 Cent, was born on July 6, 1975, in the borough of Queens in the city of New York. His mother, Sabrina, worked as a drug dealer, and the family lived in the South Jamaica ghetto when he was growing up. Jackson had only been eight years old when she passed away. After that, 50 Cent’s grandma was the one who brought him up. After school, while he was just 12 years old, he started distributing drugs. He was taken into custody in the tenth grade after being captured by metal detectors at his high school while attempting to bring guns and drug money into the school. He was arrested once more in 1994 for selling cocaine to an undercover police officer, and he was arrested once more when a search of his home by the police revealed heroin, crack cocaine, and a firearm. Both of these incidents occurred in 1994. During his time in a military boot camp, he was able to acquire his GED.
After the release of his controversial underground rap tune “How To Rob,” Jackson earned a small but noticeable amount of notoriety. When he was wounded and taken to the hospital in May of 2000, he was getting ready to release “Thug Love,” a tune he had recorded with Destiny’s Child. A gunman had attacked him outside of his grandmother’s house in Queens, and he had been injured. 50 Cent was struck by nine bullets, one each in the hand, arm, hip, both legs, chest, and left cheek, all of which were fired by the claimed assailant, Darryl Baum, who had previously served as a bodyguard for Mike Tyson. After three weeks, the assailant was finally put down. 50 Cent spent 13 days in the hospital, and while he was there, he struck a publishing deal with Columbia Records. The deal will see 50 Cent’s music published by Columbia Records. When he tried to publish the song “Ghetto Qu’ran,” however, he was dropped by Columbia as a recording artist. Because he had been banned by the recording industry in the United States as a whole, he relocated to Canada in order to record songs for mixtapes in an effort to increase his popularity. A mixtape titled “Guess Who’s Back?” was distributed by him in the year 2002.
Eminem was the one that uncovered Jackson in the year 2002. Jackson was invited to Los Angeles to see Dr. Dre because Eminem was so moved by “Guess Who’s Back?” that he extended the invitation. 50 Cent announced the release of “No Mercy, No Fear” after signing a record deal worth $1 million. The movie “8 Mile” starring Eminem includes a song by 50 Cent on the film’s soundtrack. The release of 50 Cent’s debut album, “Get Rich or Die Trying,” in 2003 catapulted him to the forefront of the music industry. It made its debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts, and in the first four days of its release, about one million copies were sold. The lead single, “In Da Club,” broke the record for the most-listened-to song in the history of radio in just one week after it was released. Soon after that, Interscope bestowed onto 50 his very own record label, known as G-Unit Records.
In March 2005, Jackson released his next studio album, titled “The Massacre.” Another phenomenal achievement, it sold 1.14 million copies in its first four days of release and remained at the top of the Billboard charts for an entire month at the number one slot. In 2007, he released his third studio album, which was titled “Curtis,” and it debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. In November of 2009, the fourth studio album, titled “Before I Self Destruct,” was made available for purchase. His fifth studio album, titled “Street King Immortal,” was not released until November 2012 because of creative differences with his record label. Over 21 million copies of his studio albums have been sold up to this point.
In the short amount of time that he has been in the public eye, 50 Cent has established the record label G-Unit Records, developed the G-Unit clothing company, and even performed in a number of movies alongside legendary actors such as Al Pacino and Robert Deniro. In the year 2012, he established a boxing promotion firm called The Money Team.
Bankruptcy Filing
On July 13, 2015, the Wall Street Journal published an article stating that 50 Cent had submitted a petition for protection under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. Due to the debtor’s residency in Connecticut, the petition for bankruptcy was submitted to the United States Bankruptcy Court in Hartford, Connecticut.
When the paperwork was being processed, 50 was residing in the ancient home that belonged to Mike Tyson at 50 Poplar Hill Dr., Farmington, Connecticut 06032. In the document, 50 Cent indicated that the worth of his assets fell somewhere between $10 million and $50 million. He stated that the quantities of his debts were equivalent.
The lawsuit was submitted a few days after a jury ordered 50 to pay Rick Ross’ ex-girlfriend, Lavonia Leviston, a $5 million verdict for knowingly distributing a sex tape in which she was involved. Lavonia Leviston was featured in the recording. The verdict consisted of $2.5 million for the unauthorized use of her photograph and another $2.5 million for the mental suffering she endured as a result of the incident. In addition, the judge, in that case, instructed Mr. Jackson to present evidence of his earnings and assets so that the jury may evaluate the amount of any additional punitive damages.
A different judge ordered 50 to pay $17.5 million in damages as part of a trademark infringement action relating to a former partner in a headphone company roughly a year before a different judge ordered 50 to pay $5 million in damages as part of the same case. Before punitive damages were figured into the equation in the sex video case, he was facing a total of $22.5 million in potential legal verdicts when they were added together.
At least in part, the decision to file for bankruptcy could be seen as a strategic action due to the following three reasons:
1) To forestall the possibility of the judgment creditor, Lavonia Leviston, interfering with his business activities and putting liens on his assets.
#2) To coerce the creditor into sitting down at the bargaining table in order to reduce the $5 million judgment.
#3) To stop the jury from awarding Ms. Leviston any additional punitive damages in the lawsuit involving the sex tapes.

In a later explanation, he would say:
“When you reach a certain level of accomplishment and stuff, you automatically become a target. I don’t want to be a target in anyone’s sight. I don’t want anyone to choose me as the one to whom they just come with enormous claims and go through all of that. I don’t want to be that man. In light of the circumstances, I am taking the kinds of safeguards that any responsible businessperson would take.”
And his attorney followed up with the following:
“The filing enables Mr. Jackson to maintain his connection with numerous commercial interests and to continue his work as an entertainer, while at the same time he pursues an orderly reorganization of his financial affairs,”
The most astute business move that 50 Cent has ever made was when he secured a minority share in Vitamin Water in exchange for being their celebrity representative and contributing his name to the “Formula 50” product. The Coca-Cola Company paid Glaceau $4.1 billion to acquire Vitamin Water from them, which resulted in 50 Cent receiving around ten times as much money as he had ever made through rapping. It was originally stated that 50 had a 10% stock share in Vitamin Water, which would have resulted in a profit of $410 million for him personally. Investment bankers who were aware of the transaction strongly hinted that 50’s ownership was closer to 2.5%, which would suggest that he gained between $100 and $150 million from the sale of the company. This amount was widely disregarded by the investment banking community (before taxes). Still not terrible!
It was rumored, but not proven, that 50 Cent had parted ways with his minority share in Effen Vodka and received $60 million for his troubles in July of 2017. 50 Cent rushed to Instagram to clarify that the contract was finalized, but he did not actually confirm the $60 million figure that DJ Envy mentioned on The Breakfast Club radio show. This number can be tracked directly to 50 Cent. The amount was reported by Envy, but the company did not give a source or verify its accuracy. It’s possible that the number started with 50, which would be incredibly interesting to know and would indicate that it’s real, but it’s also possible that this is an exaggeration of the situation. Due to the fact that we are still awaiting additional formal sources of verification, the aforementioned sum has not yet been incorporated into 50’s net worth.

In October of 2018, 50 Cent signed a comprehensive four-year deal with Starz, the cable network that is the home of his drama show “Power.” If all of the goals are reached, the value of the deal, which includes a promise to produce three series, may ultimately amount to $150 million.
Personal Life
50 Cent and his ex-girlfriend Shaniqua Tompkins are the parents of their son. The month of October 1996 saw the arrival of Marquise Jackson. Tompkins later filed a lawsuit against Jackson for $50 million, but the case was eventually thrown out. The two have engaged in a heated argument over and over again on social media.
In 2005, when fellow rapper Kanye West criticized President George W. Bush for his tardy response to the Hurricane Katrina crisis, 50 came to the president’s defense and voiced his support for Bush. In later years, Jackson was a supporter of Barack Obama (2008) and Hillary Clinton (2016). In spite of the fact that many of his songs contain references to drinking and drug use, Michael Jackson does not indulge in such activities.
In May of 2016, after strolling through Cincinnati International Airport, Jackson harassed a janitor at the airport and insulted him by accusing the janitor of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This incident took place after Jackson had walked through the airport. It was eventually discovered that the janitor was a teenager with autism and hearing impairment. After the video gained widespread attention, the teen’s parents considered filing a lawsuit against 50 Cent. They reached a compromise where 50 Cent would apologize and donate $100,000 to the Autism Speaks organization.
50 Cent purchased a 17-acre property in Connecticut in 2003. The property has a 50,000-square-foot mansion with 37 bathrooms, 21 bedrooms, a gym, a casino, and a nightclub. In addition, the property also has a swimming pool. After the bank foreclosed on the property, he purchased it from the bank, which had just evicted the previous owner, Mike Tyson. 50 Cent purchased the property for a price of $4.1 million, and then he spent an extra $6 million making various improvements to it. These improvements included the building of a private movie theatre, an infinity pool, and a helicopter pad.
During the procedures surrounding his bankruptcy, we heard through 50’s lawyers that the normal cost to maintain and finance the house is approximately $72,000 per month. His utilities alone cost $18,000.
50 made their first unsuccessful attempt to sell the home in 2007 when they listed it for $18.5 million. Since then, he has not been able to sell the house despite his continued efforts in that direction. In September 2018, he cut the price all the way down to $4.995 million, but he still did not have any takers. He was finally able to sell the property in April 2019 for $2.9 million, which was a reduction of 84% compared to the price he initially offered for it and a loss of $1.2 million compared to the amount he paid to buy it.
