The fifth season of the Netflix sensation has wrapped filming, but no release date has been announced.
Virgin River, a Netflix smash, has an old-school air, drawing inspiration from classic small-town programs like Friday Night Lights and Dawson’s Creek. The pace is unhurried, the relationships are slow burns, and the electronics are few and far between—but Netflix has moved quickly to capitalize on its surprising success, renewing Virgin River for seasons four and five in the aftermath of season three’s release. After racing through season 4 of Virgin River, fans are eager to learn when season 5 will premiere—and what that season might entail.
On that front, we have both good and bad news: The fifth season’s filming was unexpectedly pushed back four months, from March 2022 to July 2022. During a talk about This Is Us, Alexandra Breckenridge, who plays Mel, revealed to Glamour that Virgin River had been delayed: “They’ve been trying to get me to come back since I’ve been on Virgin River,” she added of the season finale of This Is Us, which aired earlier in 2022. “Season five of Virgin River was planned to begin filming in March, but it was pushed back until July. So I’m not sure Sophie and Kevin [of This Is Us] would have ended up together if we had begun when we were supposed to.”
The good news is that Season 5 of Virgin River will begin filming in British Columbia in July 2023, according to What’s on Netflix. The shooting was officially completed in late November 2023, with the official Virgin River Instagram announcing, “That’s a WRAP on Season 5! ” Then Martin Henderson (Jack) disclosed the (probable) release date: “Probably in July,” which means July 2023. So—soon!
Virgin River Season 5 Episodes
Season 5 of Virgin River will be 12 episodes long, rather than the 10 episodes seen in seasons one through three. Each episode of Season 5 costs between $3 and $5 million to produce, according to What’s on Netflix.
Virgin River Season 5 Release Date
Seasons three and four of Virgin River were released a year apart, in July 2021 and July 2022, indicating that Netflix may want to release one new season of the show per year. That means season five could arrive in July 2023, if we’re lucky.
Henderson confirmed the July release date, telling Cameo that “season five [is] coming out, I believe, possibly in July.” In another Cameo interview, Breckenridge stated, “The fifth season [will] definitely come out, I don’t know, maybe July again?”

What about future seasons? Expect a slew of them. For starters, the Robyn Carr novel series on which the show is based has 24 (yes, 24) Virgin River books. “We’re paying very careful attention, realizing that this is an incredibly rich universe of characters and that people, myself included, can’t seem to get enough,” Howe told Deadline.
Virgin River Season 5 Plot
Martin Henderson, a.k.a. Jack, had just finished filming the first episode of the fifth season when he spoke with Glamour about what was coming up. “The baby stuff becomes quite interesting… “A lot of stuff wraps up, and then there’s a bunch of fresh starts, new storylines,” he explained. “I can’t reveal too much. I’m aware that someone might relocate. Someone could depart.”
Breckenridge, for one, told New Beauty that she believes season five will have some of the best episodes yet. “I think this season has started out beautifully, and we’re heading into a few episodes soon that are quite tough. “They’re incredibly intense, and I think they’re some of our greatest episodes yet,” she remarked.
Annette O’Toole, who plays Hope, seemed to corroborate the season’s “heaviness,” telling Hello!: “There’s a huge thing that happens right in the middle of the season that draws the community together in a big way, and it’s a kind of contemporary topic that’s occurring in our country, and I’m really thrilled that they’re going there,” says one viewer.
Season 4 of Virgin River contains spoilers. Denny, Doc’s grandson, was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease towards the end of the fourth season. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tim Matheson, who plays Doc, stated that this news will, of course, have an impact on his character: “‘I could fix this,’ most doctors believe. There’s that issue. What’s wonderful is that Hope has allowed Denny into their home, and he has become a part of it. Being surrounded by love, perhaps even more than medical attention is as crucial as a medical treatment for his disease.”
Brie also confronted her violent ex, Don. “Without giving anything away, I can tell you that Brie is a person who keeps her promises. I can’t say where that leads her “TODAY spoke with Zibby Allen. “I truly hope that they figure out how to manage something that’s real,” she told People regarding her relationship with Brady. “Isn’t it true that they’re so dissimilar? They come from such diverse backgrounds. So the major question is, ‘Can they make it work and have a genuine day-to-day relationship?'”
Meanwhile, toward the end of Season 5, we found that Preacher may or may not have killed Vince. “I can’t tell you [whether Preacher murdered Vince],” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s something we notice right away. Season 5 picks up immediately after that incident.” He went on to say: “I understand the significance of that bond. Not only between Preacher and Paige, but also between Preacher and Christopher, so it’s something we’ll absolutely service and handle in season 5.”
Not to mention the possibly biggest season 5 reveal: Charmaine telling Jack that the twins aren’t his—soon after Mel disclosed that her baby is Jack’s. Is one of them faking it? Is Jack expecting one or three biological children? Or is it zero? (For his part, Henderson stated in season 5 interviews, “We’ll give him Mel’s baby, but Charmaine’s babies are not his.” “You’re going to find out in season five,” he said when asked why Charmaine has been lying.
Then there’s Mandy, Jack’s ex-wife, whom we’ve heard about but never met…until now. In an interview with Glamour, showrunner Sean Smith remarked, “I would suggest, checking out season five and see if Mandy makes an appearance.”
