Sex Education is without a doubt one of the most popular Netflix shows, but season three raised some serious concerns about what the future holds for the Moordale students.
Thankfully, a fourth season was announced to be coming soon after the show’s September 2021 premiere. However, with the stars’ rising demand in the months since, it appears that this may be the beginning of the series demise.
The characters unite in an effort to save Moordale in season four, and here’s all you need to know about what’s been happening and when we’re likely to see it.
Sex Education season 4 Release Date
The fourth season of Sex Education was formally approved in September 2021, however, at the time we only knew that thanks to a school-issued Twitter “news release.”
Since it was officially announced in August 2022 that the show was restarting production, the only thing left to do is wait for everything to be finished.
However, Jim Howick told Digital Spy in August that they intend to continue filming until February 2023, so the production will likely last for some time. Therefore, a trailer or anything even vaguely titillating is a long way off.
Thankfully, Gillian Anderson (real name Jean Milburn; better known as Sex Education) posted a set photo to whet fans’ appetites.
The actress who plays the sex therapist appears to be getting ready for a scandalous season in the picture. She is wearing hair and makeup. She wrote “Jean’s baaaaaack! @sexeducation” as the caption, which caused followers to go completely bonkers.
We will have to wait patiently for additional information because it, unfortunately, doesn’t tell anything about what’s to come. We’ll have to use the tried-and-true method of guesswork to determine the release date.
Due to the pandemic, season three deviated from the show’s norm of being released in January (which as we all know, threw a spanner into everything over the past few years). Instead, it debuted at the beginning of September.
The South Wales Argus, a local newspaper in the region where the show is being filmed, reports that there have been requests for school extras because characters are dispersed as a result of Moordale’s closing.
As a result, should all go according to plan, we would venture a (ahem) educated guess that the show is aiming for a September 2023 release date.
Sex Education Season 4 Cast
Without its A+ ensemble cast, who each brings a colorful and delightfully bizarre character to live in the Welsh suburbs, Sex Education just wouldn’t be the program it is.

But given that so many celebrities have stated they won’t be coming back, it appears we’re set to get a tonne of new characters or a cast that is drastically reduced.
Starting with the positive news, Asa Butterfield will reprise his role as Otis Milburn and genuine great Gillian Anderson will reprise her role as his mother and sex therapist Dr. Jean Milburn.
In addition to returning as the next Doctor in Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa will also play Eric Effiong, Otis’s outlandish closest friend. And soon after wrapping up filming with Margot Robbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, Emma Mackey, who plays Otis’s will-they-won’t-they love interest Maeve Wiley, is back in action (even if she is launching the series in the US).
Others on the cast that have been confirmed to return are:
- Adam Groff (Connor Swindells)
- Aimee Gibbs (Aimee-Lou Wood)
- Jackson Marchetti (Kedar Williams-Stirling)
- Cal Bowman (Dua Saleh)
- Ruby Matthews (Mimi Keene)
- Viv Odusanya (Chinenye Ezeudu)
- Isaac Goodwin (George Robinson)
- Michael Groff (Alistair Petrie)
- Maureen Groff (Samantha Spiro)
We’ve also got some fresh additions! Dan Levy, who starred in Schitt’s Creek, will join the cast as Maeve’s tutor Thomas Molloy while she studies in the United States. Thaddea Graham from Doctor Who will also make an unconfirmed appearance in a recurring role.
Marie Reuther, Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, Reda Elazouar, Bella Maclean, and Imani Yahshua round up the new cast members for Sex Education season four.
Unfortunately, a few familiar names won’t be present, as at least four significant players have announced they won’t return for the following year.
Given the popularity of Bridgerton, Simone Ashley announced she would not be returning for season four as the “Untouchable” Olivia Hanan and that she would instead be appearing in a third season of Bridgerton. She expressed her excitement to see Kate Sharma’s life as a married Viscountess.
Two other cast members made the same announcement in July 2022, one week apart. The first was Patricia Allison, who portrays Ola Nyman, Otis’s former partner, and potential future step-sibling.
On July 6, Allison said on Capital Xtra’s breakfast program, “I absolutely have loved being on Sex Education so, so much and playing Ola.” But regrettably, I won’t be a part of the team in season four.
In order to make room for some new material, Allison decided to depart the show.
The celebrity hinted that “some other opportunities have come up” (possibly referring to the upcoming superhero show Extraordinary). I’ve been doing it for three years, and I really enjoy it.
Following this statement, Tanya Reynolds, who played fan favorite Lily Iglehart, Ola’s girlfriend and the author of genuinely weird erotic Shakespeare translations, made a second one on July 13.
Reynolds revealed exclusively to Digital Spy that Lily would also not be returning. In my opinion, Lily’s plotline was satisfactorily resolved at the conclusion of season three. She had a really happy ending, so there are no loose ends to tie up.
“At the conclusion of the previous season, everyone sort of disperses, and I simply think that’s a fantastic time to introduce some new characters.
“I will miss [her] terribly. I had the nicest experience throughout those three seasons and will definitely miss Lily, who I adore with all of my heart.
Rakhee Thakrar, who plays English teacher Emily Sands, later announced that she too would not be returning for Sex Education’s fourth season.
The former EastEnders actor made a suggestion about upcoming roles while stating that she was “proud” of her work on the program even if she wasn’t yet able to explain why she wouldn’t be returning as Emily.
Having still not received a call, Jim Howick, who plays Emily’s partner and science and music instructor Colin Hendricks, stated that he was unsure of his own return in August 2022.
“I’m fairly confident that I am since I would know if I wasn’t; I’ll probably find out shortly. I believe I will most likely be in it, but it won’t be until the second block, which won’t be till February. So, we still have a long way to go, he exclusively told Digital Spy, later adding, “I don’t want to announce anything for sure because, obviously, you simply never know in these situations.”
Abbi and Kent, who were described as a “power couple” in a casting call, will also be joining the Sex Education ensemble for season four. Abbi was described as having a “’90s Winona Ryder feel.”
Abbi, who was expelled from her fundamentalist and religious family, now resides with Kent’s parents. Her bio states: “In her group and at her college, Abbi reigns supreme. She is cheerful, alluring, giving, and devoted.”
Kent is transmasculine and from an accepting family, but he lacks the self-assurance of a popular student at his college in terms of his position.
He has been dating Abbi for some time, and everyone at school adores their “couple goals” personalities since he is “goofy, forgetful, and a fantastic listener.” We’re eager to meet them.
Sex Education season 4 Plot
According to the Sex Education season four official synopsis, “Otis and Eric now face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College,” following the closure of Moordale Secondary.
“Eric is hoping they won’t lose again, while Otis is anxious about opening his new clinic. For all of the Moordale students, though, Cavendish is a cultural shock because while they felt they were progressive, this new college is on another level.
Daily yoga in the community garden, a strong emphasis on sustainability, and a group of youngsters who are well-known for being… kind? The college’s student-led, non-competitive approach completely surprises Viv, while Jackson is still having trouble moving past Cal.

“Aimee tries something new by enrolling in an art A-Level, and Adam questions whether he should attend a traditional school. Maeve is pursuing her dream in the US at the prestigious Wallace University, where cult author Thomas Molloy is her professor.
While adjusting to not being the only child at home or the lone therapist at school, Otis is yearning for her.
So it appears to be all systems go!
At the conclusion of season three, Sex Education dropped a metaphorical life bomb on the pupils by announcing the demise of Moordale High.
The school board decided to close the group after they gained internet fame for their honest and open discussions about sex (as well as the various plays and films they produced that were a touch too racy for parents’ tastes).
That is causing ALL of our teen characters to disperse and find separate places to finish their schooling.
Relationships and friendships will be put to the ultimate test as a result of the school closing unless they work together to try to save Moordale before it’s too late.
After finally admitting their affection for one another during a kiss in France, Maeve and Otis are still very much in the “will they/won’t they?” stage. But given that Otis and Ruby have grown closer, could this be viewed as a chance lost that will never truly materialize?
When it seemed as though the two were finally going to give it a shot, Maeve made the decision to travel to the US in order to expand her “disgustingly big brain,” which caused their relationship to once again hang in the balance.
Heraclitus once remarked, “Everything flows, nothing stands static,” and there’s a good chance Maeve and Otis won’t ever agree on anything. Time will only tell.
Eric and Adam have officially broken up after realizing that, regrettably, they don’t have the same sexual preferences. Eric, who was openly gay, said to Adam in an emotional scene: “I just feel like I’m ready to fly and you’re just learning to walk.”
Unquestionably, the main theme of season three was people making the best decisions for themselves, putting their own mental health first, and discovering how to truly love and accept themselves. Guys, the most crucial relationship you can have is with yourself.
Adam has at least repaired his relationship with his family, and he is only beginning the process of coming out. Additionally, he’s grown to love dog training, which may come into play in upcoming episodes.
Aimee has broken up with her boyfriend and is now seeing Jean for therapy because she is still struggling with the effects of a sexual assault she experienced on a bus in season two. She is now able to develop her independence without needing a man nearby to act as backup.
Wood told Digital Spy that Aimee had “all these voices around her, talking about what she’s been through, and telling her what she’s been through.” Everyone is trying to help, but until that point in therapy, it’s not enough. Her only best friend, Maeve, and she are no longer friends. She has been advised to end her relationship with Steve.
She has always had a boyfriend. She experiences all of her fears coming true. She actually comes to the realization, “Oh my God, I’m fine.” I’m still here and I’m okay, despite all these really terrifying things that have happened.
Additionally, Wood provided Digital Spy with an update while Living was being promoted.
The fact that the characters are attending a new school makes them feel as though they are in completely unfamiliar territory. The fact that they are [at] a new school in the story is one of the main reasons why we often feel a little out of it.
“Aimee, in particular, has no friends at her new school because her best friend attends a different university in America and she has never before been single. As a result, all of the characters have a lot to learn, which, in my opinion, gives the show a fresh feel.
Wood also talked about how Aimee’s life has improved since Maeve moved to America.
“She doesn’t have her best friend with her, and she isn’t dating someone for the first time. Additionally, she is a new student at this school and has no friends “Timber said (via HypeBae).
“What’s amazing is that Aimee discovers a connection to herself through her art. Although people perceive Aimee as being stupid, I have always believed that she is not. She is incredibly perceptive, emotionally intelligent, and imaginative. She discovers this season that she is a brilliant thinker with a lot to say.”
But with Jean almost passing away while giving birth at the end of season three, the adults are the ones who drop the biggest bomb on us.
Because of her unplanned pregnancy, Jean was able to get closer to Jakob, Ola’s presumed father. However, as she was recovering in the hospital during the final moments of the show, she learned the DNA results and, to quote Jerry Springer, “Jakob… you are NOT the father!”
But now Jean must make a choice. Does she keep telling lies to her partner in order to keep their happy existence going? Or does she tell the truth? We can be certain that this will not end well in either scenario.
