When it comes to spin-off series and origin stories, the film and television industry are typically risk-averse, but with American Horror Story stars Ryan Murphy and Sarah Paulson in command, their Netflix series prequel to the drama film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was a tremendous hit.

The TV show delves into the origins of the film’s antagonist, the repressive Nurse Mildred Ratched, and how she came to be the figure that audiences in the classic thriller film loved to despise. The series, which premiered in September 2020, was a huge success. Ratched had mixed reviews from reviewers, with an average Rotten Tomatoes score of 61%, yet it was nominated for four Primetime Emmys, proving that it was undeniably popular with viewers.

According to Netflix, 48 million households watched the episode within 28 days of its broadcast, making it the most-watched series launch of 2020. Ratched Season 2 Renewal Status at Netflix

The sitcom is expected to have at least eight additional episodes, which were ordered before the first season aired.

Ratched was picked up by Netflix in September 2017 and received a two-season order. We got one episode more than we were promised in the original press release, but as Deadline notes, “Ratched landed a two-season, 18-episode straight-to-series order.”

Ratched was brought to Netflix by the now-defunct Fox 21 Television Studios, along with The Politician, which was also granted an upfront order (but is now finished and is not likely to return for a season 3).

As you may know, Ryan Murphy has an overall arrangement with Netflix that does not officially apply to Ratched (or indeed The Politician).

Ratched Season 2 Plot

What will happen in Ratched Season 2? Nurse Ratched and Briggs (who had been miraculously healed of cancer) fled to Mexico together at the end of Season One, leaving Nurse Bucket to take over Lucia State. This was more Thelma and Louise than American Horror Story.

But, we are well aware that this happy ending will not last. Not only is Ratched’s brother Edmund fleeing capture and plotting her murder, but we already know how Ratched’s story will end because this is a prequel serial.

The series’ ultimate purpose is to contextualize One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest by demonstrating how Nurse Ratched became the corrupt, perverted megalomaniac we witness in the film.

Season 2 will be entrusted with revealing what exactly caused Ratched to lose her last remnants of humanity. We expect Edmund, along with his fiancée Louise and Charlotte, who suffers from dissociative identity disorder, to play a role in Ratched’s downfall.

In an interview with The Wrap in September 2020, Paulson appears to imply that her character’s conflict with her brother and her discovery of his violent tendencies will take center stage and cost her soul.

“What you’re probably going to see is a Mildred who has now grown even harder, because the thing that kept her soft was part of her that was engaged in the love, protection, and need for absolution as it applied to her brother,” she explained. But I’m very sure I’m becoming further and further away from her heart and humanity.”

Ratched Season 2 Cast

While Gwendolyn and Nurse Ratched spent the final episode of season 1 hiding out in Mexico, we have a feeling they won’t be able to stay away from St Lucia for long. We await their return for Ratched season 2 alongside Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon, in addition to Finn Wittrock, who plays Edmund Tolleson and appears driven to exact revenge on Sarah Paulson and Cynthia Nixon.

Several of the season 1 characters perished too soon, but those who have so far survived will presumably return, even though the two-year time jump at the end of season 1 allows for certain characters to be murdered off-screen.
