Raising Dion has officially ended. We are devastated that the hit Netflix drama based on Dennis Liu’s comic strip of the same name will not be renewed for a third season.

Following the Netflix announcement, the cast members took to social media to express their feelings at the end of their two-year run.

“Sorry to report that Raising Dion is CANCELLED,” actress Sammie Haney, who played Esperanza, wrote on Instagram. Thank you to all of our lovely fans for your incredible support! Season two was a success, comparable to Season one, based only on the number of individuals who watched the entire season.

Ja’Siah Young, who played the titular hero Dion, added to the discussion by saying: “It isn’t any of us, it isn’t me, and it isn’t you. You guys were fantastic; I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you very much.”

The appealing sitcom chronicled the narrative of Nicole Warren (Alisha Wainwright) and her son Dion (Young), whose battle with adversary The Crooked Man enchanted viewers. So, what’s the deal with the cancellation?

Why Raising Dion Season 3 was canceled

Netflix has remained tight-lipped about its decision to cancel Raising Dion, although financial difficulties could be at the foundation of the show’s demise.

The fall in Netflix’s stock price as a result of the loss of 200,000 customers resulted in further heartache as investors withdrew $1.1 billion in funding. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the streaming service is expected to lose another two million users, which can’t be good for the franchise and its home of binge-worthy entertainment.

If this is the basis for the cancellation of Raising Dion, we may see more painful cancellations as Netflix continues to tighten its financial strings.

While Netflix may face some difficult decisions in the future months (please, no Ginny and Georgia), the decision to shorten Raising Dion’s shelf life was unquestionably a mistake.

Wainwright put it best when she shared her thoughts on Instagram.

“I am heartbroken that the show is not moving on, not only because I will no longer be able to work with my amazing cast and crew in the same way, but also because I believe Raising Dion achieved so much for tiny Black and Brown children and children with disabilities,” she wrote.

“I wish we could share more stories from our great Magical world with them. My heart hurts for the children.”

Her point perfectly encapsulates why a program like Raising Dion should have been the furthest thing from Netflix’s chopping board.

There is very little varied representation in the superhero realm, let alone a show with a primary character who is both Black and a youngster.

While the representation of marginalized groups in this sector is improving (Black Panther, Shang-Chi and the Ten Rings, Ms. Marvel, and so on), now is not the time to cut back on this type of content.

We don’t get to throw in a few token ethnicities, slap ourselves on the back, and then sit back with a ‘job well done’ mentality.

While the chances of gaining mind-moving skills are limited, the chances of seeing yourself as powerful and courageous should not be.

Raising Dion not only speaks aspirationally to young and Black children, but it also explores Black hardships in an exquisitely beautiful way. It did so in a palatable fashion that did not minimize the reality, assisting youngsters of all races in making sense of racial biases in their surroundings. In that regard, just a few shows have succeeded.

To paraphrase Wainwright, Raising Dion was able to champion diversity on numerous levels. It provided disabled people a voice through the character of Esperanza, who was unafraid of her limits. She was not meant to be flawed or pitied, but rather to be a character who emanated confidence, which is very lacking on mainstream television.

It was also refreshing to see a single Black working mother shown as someone who does not need to be justified in order to be accepted by society. Nicole Warren, despite her worries, was brave, capable, and in little need of saving.

Because of the abrupt ending, we will never learn who the Crooked Man is or how antagonist Pat’s return to the evil side would lead to the powerful villain seen in the post-credits scene. #Sob.

Yet, it reveals a prosperous Industry in the future. Thus, while there may be no hope for the future of the Dion-verse, we may rest assured that he is still cleaning up the neighborhood one villain at a time.

Raising Dion Season 3 Release Date

The list of movies and TV shows coming to Netflix in October 2022, as expected, does not contain Raising Dion Season 3.

Unfortunately, no release date for Season 3 has been set as Netflix terminated Raising Dion.

Raising Dion Season 3 Plot

Season 2 of Raising Dion ended with less of a cliffhanger than Season 1. The post-credits scene indicates a future confrontation between Dion and Pat, therefore Season 3 will most likely build up to that tension.

Dion will most likely be able to master controlling his powers, while Pat will do the same. Some fans are also hoping for the reappearance of Michael B.’s Mark Warren, Nicole’s murdered husband, and scientist who was granted superpowers by the Icelandic aurora. Nicole and Tevin, on the other hand, are a charming couple. When he offers some joy to her difficult surroundings, she appears to be recovering. What will happen if Mark returns?

Tevin will very certainly continue to be Dion’s superhero trainer. Brayden’s narrative has a lot of potential for development. He seemed to have escaped the darkness, but only just. How will he use his mind-control abilities in the future? Will he collaborate with Dion in Season 3?

Kat’s most recent employment at Biona in the science department is a strong indication that the research facility is far from over. We may see the facility train powered people, which might lead to the introduction of new superheroes and villains in Season 3.

While Dion and Nicole were able to seal the effects of the flower at the sinkhole, the Crooked Man’s energies will surely live on to possess someone else. Ultimately, Raising Dion Season 3 will most likely focus on Dion’s passage into adolescence.

The post-credits scene hints that the series is preparing for a time travel tale in Season 3 as we see Pat entering Atlanta at the head of his army clad in a costume similar to Marvel’s Doctor Doom. He is accosted by a flying man who appears from nowhere and identifies himself as Mind Mover (the superhero alias chosen by Dion). This is the adult Dion (Chris June), and it appears that there will be a time jump in Season 3.

Raising Dion Season 3 Cast

The Triangle of Justice – Dion Warren (Ja’Siah Young) and his best friends Jonathan King (Gavin Munn) and Esperanza (Sammi Haney) – was still going strong in the Season 2 conclusion, so we can anticipate the trio to return if Netflix renews the show for Season 3.

Nicole (Alisha Wainwright), who was infected by the weird flowers in the sinkhole in Season 2, survived and will likely return in the hypothetical third season.

Crooked Pat (Jason Ritter), the villain, may also return for Season 3 alongside David Marsh (Josh Ventura).

Tevin Wakefield (Rome Flynn), Dion’s supercharged coach who trained Nicole’s son in the Biona research lab, is expected to return, along with other prospective returning cast members Suzanne Wu (Ali Ahn), Janelle Carr (Aubriana Davis), and Auntie Kat (Jazmyn Simon).
