Sadly, The Handmaid’s Tale will eventually come to an end as all stories do.

The sixth and final season of June and her friends will hopefully bring her journey to a satisfying conclusion for devoted fans before the release of season five earlier this year.

The Handmaid’s Tale writer, showrunner, and executive producer Bruce Miller said at the time: “It has been a great honor to convey the narrative of Margaret Atwood’s groundbreaking novel and the chillingly current world, and we are happy to deliver audiences a sixth and final season.”

We are appreciative of Hulu and MGM for letting us tell this narrative, which has regrettably remained timely throughout its run. We are also in awe of our great audience for their unwavering support, without which we would not have reached this stage.

What can we expect from The Handmaid’s Tale season 6? What impact will this final installment have on the upcoming The Testaments spin-off, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s most recent addition to the original work?

Handmaid’s Tale season 6 Release Date

Originally, The Handmaid’s Tale would release one new season a year. However, the epidemic threw that plan off, and seasons three and four were separated by two years. The season six release window, one year after season five, maybe around the end of 2023 given that production appears to be back on schedule.

Miller continued, “So we always have enormous quantities of story that we’re not able to do. “Massive flashbacks that simply take up too much space. The network would air one, two, or three more episodes for us. But we need to distill this because of the stories.”

Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Plot

Digital Spy spoke with showrunner Bruce Miller about his ideas for a potential endgame now that season five is over, though Bruce notes that the initial concepts will probably change as more writing is done.

Miller declared, “We’re going to close it up on our terms. “With the way the firm is set up, we never receive it. More importantly, though, it’s not something that every audience member would present.

The book’s abrupt conclusion makes it extremely aggravating at the end. Everyone exclaims, “How could you, Bruce Miller… Write more, who do you believe you are? Oh my God, writing the next chapters is all I’ve ever wanted to accomplish. Because it’s like: what the hell happened?! Oh my God, that’s an incredibly frustrating conclusion.

Miller remarked, referring particularly to June’s conclusion: “We have had so many women throughout history who had no names and were never identified. They spent some time there. They shared their tale, and she told it in The Handmaid’s Tale.

Then they vanish into the veil of time without a trace. The issue is that there are too many women who are simply Offred and just The Handmaid.

“But that is the narrative we are using. This story actually begins when the child is taken away from the mother. She then transforms into a Handmaid at that point. And it comes to an end when she vanishes from our radar. She does not, however, vanish from sight. She is a genuine human being. Just because she’s not on our radar, doesn’t mean she doesn’t exist.”

The fact that Miller claimed that June and Nick were unable to “think about anything” other than their love for one another around the end of season five suggests that they may still have some unresolved issues to discuss in season six.

He said to Entertainment Weekly, “I feel like this is the most romantic Nick/June season ever because they spend the entire time trying to convince themselves that they don’t need to be together.

“And in the end, they completely fail and are not successful at all. They don’t even interact in the last episode, but they are so in love that they can’t stop thinking about one other “Added he.

Fans of The Handmaid’s Tale still have The Testaments spinoff to look forward to, even beyond season six. Without giving too much away, Aunt Lydia has a significantly important role in that book, therefore Ann Dowd might reprise the role in this new musical.

To be honest, I was thrilled by what Aunt Lydia does and how she does it, her comprehension of Gilead to its core, and what will bring it down. This is what Dowd had to say about Lydia’s unexpected acts in the sequel when the book was originally published in 2019. How [she] got engaged in Gilead in the first place bothered me and didn’t.

“Whenever you take on a part like Lydia in The Handmaid’s Tale, you look for a personal connection that could explain why she would make the decisions she does. Now that you’ve read The Testaments, Lydia, a family court judge, has swiftly realized that if she wants to live and exist in this world, she must do this. In addition to doing it, I’m going to do it better than everyone else, therefore I’ll be in charge of the other aunts’.

Will Ann Dowd play Aunt Lydia again in this future sequel, though? At this point, it’s difficult to envision anyone else filling the position, and Dowd wholeheartedly concurs.

The Emmy Award winner, who will debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in June 2021, joked about the future viability of her position:

“Additionally, I hope they’ll let me play her, was another idea that crossed my mind. I’ll say it right now. The issue is that if they don’t, I’ll pursue them until they give up, so the actress who would have been cast should keep an eye on her back.”

She’s obviously joking, but could she also not be?

Bruce Miller, the creator of the series, is already hard at work on the spin-off project.

Miller told Deadline, “I’m working on The Testaments as I’m working on season six of The Handmaid’s Tale. “Having a different book to turn to is really great.

“I think the people [who watch the TV show] have to be okay with the fact that The Testaments is a sequel to this TV show, much like handmaids didn’t follow the novel.

“Thus, while everyone is moving in those directions, I’m not necessarily aiming for those things the way they are in The Testaments.

“I spoke extensively with Margaret [Atwood] about the [June] character. Before she ever began to write The Testaments, she caught a few episodes of the show. The characters are clearly fitting into place for The Testaments, and I think they share a lot of commonalities, which is amazing.”
