“You have to know when to quit a party.”
Few anticipated a Breaking Bad prequel to live up to the original. So imagine our amazement when Better Call Saul outdid itself with something even more special.
But is it possible to have too much of a good thing? Would a return to Saul’s story, or even another spin-off, lessen the effect of these two near-perfect shows?
Why Better Call Saul was canceled
Better Call Saul creator Peter Gould stated at the TCA press tour in 2020 that the show would end with its sixth and final season.
“From the beginning of Better Call Saul, my aim has been to tell the full tale of our conflicted and compromised hero, Jimmy McGill And now AMC and Sony are making that dream a reality,” he added (via Express).
“We are eternally grateful to the fans and critics who have made this journey possible. We start work on the sixth and final season next month, and we’re going to do everything we can to stick the landing.”

“Greenlighting a prequel to one of the most legendary programs in television history is one of the biggest swings that AMC has ever taken,” said AMC Studios president Sarah Barnett. But it has also been one of the most gratifying, thanks to the creative genius of Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould.”
Since then, creator Vince Gilligan has stated why season six was chosen as the final installment (via The Hollywood Reporter): “You must know when to quit a gathering. You don’t want to be the man wearing a lampshade… I know I was asked the same question at the end of Breaking Bad and gave the same answer, but I need to show myself that I’m not a one-trick pony.
Better Call Saul was able to conclude on its own terms rather than face a sudden cancellation, which is becoming increasingly rare these days. That allowed the writers to take their time and eventually catch up to Breaking Bad’s storyline by the end of their last episode.
With no more tales to tell in the past and future Saul moments in Breaking Bad that looked even further forward, it appears that Saul’s journey has come to a natural conclusion. But, there was a time not long ago when that seemed impossible.
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Peter Gould discussed the production setback caused by Bob Odenkirk’s heart attack on site.
“There is no backup plan if your leader has a heart attack. It is not possible. It reminds you that as busy and vital as entertainment feels – and we all feel like it’s life-or-death when we’re working on these shows; I always feel like I’m about to be crushed by a boulder – it’s not “He remembered. “It’s pure enjoyment.”
Odenkirk returned to set five weeks later to finish filming the final few episodes of Better Call Saul. And, according to Gould, Bob was raring to go:
“[Bob] was calling me while he was still in the hospital, asking, ‘Maybe you should send me some scripts.’ ‘Don’t send scripts,’ his wife Naomi said in the background. I’m not sure whether I answered your question concerning backup plans, but there can’t be any. There would have been no show. We would’ve scrapped the whole thing.”
Fortunately, everything worked out and the story was completed.
Will there be a Better Call Saul spinoff or movie?
While Saul’s story feels complete, Better Call Saul began as a spin-off, implying that another might possibly take the Breaking Bad series in a different path.
When questioned about this prospect, Gilligan told Rolling Stone: “I could do more with this universe. And perhaps I will someday. Particularly if I fail at everything that follows. Then I’ll return crawling.”
Yet, this does not guarantee that Gilligan will ever do so.
“Right now, whether there’s more opportunity to expand or not – and there most likely is – I feel like it’s time to start something new,” he said.

Dive right back in, and you risk repeating a mistake all too common in TV and movies these days.
“Without naming any names, I take a look around at some of the worlds, universes, and storylines that I enjoy, whether on TV or in movies. And I believe there comes a moment, which is difficult to describe, where you’ve done too much in the same realm “He stated.
“And some universes are far larger and more elastic than others. Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a fairly little town in comparison to some of these worlds and series of movies and TV episodes.”
Nevertheless, in June 2022, AMC president Dan McDermott gave viewers some optimism during a discussion with Variety, saying: “I can tell you that if I could do anything to encourage Vince and Peter to carry on in this universe, I would do it.
“I guess you’d have to ask them, but the door is always open, and I long for the day when my phone rings and Vince, Peter, or our Sony friends call to say, ‘Hey, I think we have another program set in this universe,'” says the author.
If a spin-off is ever created, don’t expect Aaron Paul to reprise his role as Jesse after the Better Call Saul conclusion.
“We’ve all known our roles for years, so it felt wonderful,” Paul recently told The Hollywood Reporter. “[Jesse] will always hold a particular place in my heart, but I can firmly say that [Better Call Saul] was the final time we saw Pinkman. So that was a beautiful send-off.”
Bob Odenkirk, who said in an emotional farewell after the final episode of Better Call Saul aired, is also unlikely to reprise his part “We came out of what was possibly a lot of people’s favorite show ever, and we might have been despised for just attempting to do a program. But we weren’t, we were given an opportunity and hopefully, we made the most of it.”
Better Call Saul
Better Call Saul is a prequel and spin-off to the critically acclaimed series Breaking Bad. Since its inception, the performance has kept the audience on their toes. Better Call Saul aired its premiere episode in 2015. The show reflects the hard reality and is different from the present narrative plots.
The show is about Jimmy McGill, a small-time attorney, and how he transforms into the virtuously challenged lawyer Saul Goodman. Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have done an outstanding job with talented actors such as Michael McKean, Bob Odenkirk, Michael Mando, and others. The sixth season’s final episode aired on August 15, 2022.
