Shapiro argues in his first book, Brainwashed: How Universities Indoctrinate America’s Youth (2004), that the American Left has gained ideological dominance over universities and that professors are unwilling to tolerate opposing viewpoints.

Shapiro’s fourth book, Primetime Propaganda: The True Hollywood Story of How the Left Took Over Your TV, was published by HarperCollins in 2011. In it, he argues that Hollywood has a left-wing agenda that it actively promotes through prime-time entertainment programming and that this agenda is being actively promoted through prime-time entertainment programming. In the book, the creators of Happy Days and M*A*S*H claim that they used their shows to promote a pro-pacifist, anti-Vietnam War agenda during their production. A fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center was also established for Shapiro.

Bullies: How the Left’s Culture of Fear and Intimidation Silences Americans was published by Threshold Editions in 2013. It was Shapiro’s fifth book and his first with the publisher.

True Allegiance, his first and, to date, only fiction novel, was published in the spring of 2017.

He published The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great, a book that emphasizes the importance of Judeo-Christian values while also lamenting the decline of those values in contemporary America, in 2019.

The BBC’s Andrew Neil suggested in a May 2019 interview with Shapiro, during which he was promoting his book, that Shapiro’s previous statements were inconsistent with the message of the book.

Following the questioning, Shapiro accused Neil (a prominent British conservative journalist) of having a left-leaning bias and claimed that Neil was attempting to “make quick money… off the fact that I’m popular and no one has ever heard of you,” before concluding the interview. Several days after the incident, Shapiro admitted that he had been “destroyed” by Neil, writing on Twitter that he “[had broken] his own rule, and [had] not been properly prepared.”

Shapiro published the book The Authoritarian Moment in 2021, in which he argues that the right-wing is not a serious threat to authoritarianism in American politics. Rather, he contends that the left’s control of academia, Hollywood, journalism, and corporate America is the source of the authoritarian threat we face today.

After joining Breitbart News, which was founded by Andrew Breitbart in 2011, Shapiro was promoted to the position of editor-at-large in 2012.

In March 2016, Shapiro resigned from his position as editor-at-large of Breitbart News in protest of what he perceived to be the web site’s failure to support reporter Michelle Fields in the aftermath of her alleged assault by Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager. despite the fact that there is video and eyewitness evidence of the attack. Steve Bannon is a bully, according to Shapiro, and Donald Trump is a bully, according to Shapiro. Bannon has “shaped the company into Trump’s personal Pravda,” Shapiro claims in his resignation statement.

Immediately following Shapiro’s departure, Breitbart published an article, which was falsely attributed to Shapiro’s father’s pseudonym and stated that “Ben Shapiro betrays loyal Breitbart readers in pursuit of Fox News contributorship,” which Breitbart later removed from its website.

Following his departure from Breitbart News, Shapiro became a frequent target of anti-Semitic rhetoric from the alt-right movement.

According to an Anti-Defamation League analysis conducted in 2016, Shapiro was the most frequently targeted journalist in antisemitic tweets.

According to Shapiro’s article published on February 7, 2013, which cited unspecified Senate sources who claimed that a group is known as “Friends of Hamas” was among foreign contributors to the political campaign of Chuck Hagel, a former United States Senator who is awaiting confirmation to be President Barack Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Defense. However, weeks later, Slate reporter David Weigel reported there was no evidence that such a group existed.

Shapiro told Weigel that the story he published represented “the sum total of the information [he] had at the time.”

The David Horowitz Freedom Center collaborated with Shapiro and his business partner Jeremy Boreing to launch TruthRevolt, a media watchdog and activism website based in the United States. TruthRevolt was forced to close its doors in March of this year.

Among his contributions to Politico’s Playbook newsletter on January 14, 2021, was a defense of House Republicans who opposed the second impeachment of Donald Trump, which he wrote as a guest writer.

Many Politico staffers were outraged by the newsletter, with some claiming that Shapiro should not have been allowed to write the article and that the newsletter should have been pulled. Political reporter Ben Shapiro wrote an article for Politico in which the editor-in-chief, Matthew Kaminski, refused to apologize or retract his decision to publish it, stating, “We’re not going to back away from having published something because some people think it was a mistake to do so.”

According to the Daily Beast, more than 100 Politico staffers signed a letter to publisher Robert Allbritton in which they expressed their dissatisfaction with both Politico’s decision to publish Shapiro’s article and Kaminski’s response to it.

According to Westwood One, as of March 2019, The Ben Shapiro Show is broadcast on more than 200 radio stations across the country, including nine of the top ten markets. Shapiro stepped down from his position as editor-in-chief, which he had held since the site’s inception, and assumed the role of editor emeritus in June 2020, effective immediately.

During the 2018 presidential election season, Shapiro began hosting The Ben Shapiro Election Special on Fox News. The news and issues surrounding the 2018 midterm elections were covered in this limited-run series.

According to PragerU, Shapiro has made a number of appearances with talks on intersectionality and Hollywood, which have received between 4,900,000 and 8,400,000 views as of December 2018.

In addition to speaking on college campuses across the country, Shapiro is a published author. When it comes to controversial subjects, he frequently presents a conservative point of view in his public speeches. Between the beginning of 2016 and the end of 2017, he spoke on 37 different campuses.

Shapiro, who was then an editor at Breitbart News, was scheduled to deliver a speech at California State University, Los Angeles on February 25, 2016, titled “When Diversity Becomes a Problem.”

Some students and faculty members at the university expressed opposition to the speech. University president William Covino canceled the speech three days before it was scheduled to take place, with the intention of rescheduling it so that the event could include a variety of viewpoints on the subject of campus diversity, according to the university’s website. Covino ultimately reversed his decision, allowing the speech to proceed as scheduled after much deliberation.

During the speech, student protesters formed human chains, which they used to block the entrances to the event and stage sit-in demonstrations. A protester activated the fire alarm just as Shapiro was about to begin his speech. Following the conclusion of his speech, Shapiro was escorted out of the building by campus police.

Young America’s Foundation announced that it would file a lawsuit against the university (with Shapiro as one of the plaintiffs), alleging that Covino’s attempted cancellation of the event, as well as the physical barricading of students from entering or leaving the event, violated the rights of the students under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

As a result of “security concerns,” DePaul University revoked Shapiro’s invitation to speak to students at the school in August 2016 and barred him from entering the campus in the following month.

Shapiro delivered a speech on September 14, 2017, at the invitation of the Berkeley College Republicans, a student organization at the University of California, Berkeley, in which he criticized the concept of “identity politics.”

Berkeley Chancellor Carol T. Christ had promised a large police presence for the event in her August letter supporting free speech, and she delivered on her promise. The university and the city of Berkeley spent a total of $600,000 on police and security for the event, which resulted in nine arrests but no major incidents, according to the university.

Personal life

In addition to being an opera singer, Shapiro’s sister, Abigail Shapiro, also posts videos on YouTube under the name Classically Abby. Because of her brother’s high public profile, Abigail Shapiro has been the target of antisemitic trolling on the internet. Despite the fact that Shapiro is the cousin of a writer and actress Mara Wilson, the two are not on speaking terms because of their divergent political viewpoints.

The couple moved to Los Angeles in 2008, where Shapiro married Mor Toledano, an Israeli medical doctor of Moroccan descent.

It is the couple’s third child; they have two daughters and one son. They are adherents of Orthodox Judaism. In 2019, the FBI apprehended a man from Washington who had made death threats against Shapiro and his family, according to court documents.
